Former School Superintendent D.A. Edwards Dies Thursday
D.A. Edwards - educator, church and civic leader, and one of the community´s best known residents - was claimed by death at 6 p.m. last Thursday, Oct. 19, following an illness spanning several years. He died in Crosbyton Clinic Hospital.A Crosbyton resident for over half a century. Mr. Edwards was 78. For 11 years he served as superintendent of the Crosbyton Independent School District before becoming Crosby County school superintendent, a position he held for 20 years.
Edwards was an administrator in Texas public schools for 39 years. Before moving here, he was superintendent of the O´Donnell school system.
Prior to his retirement, Mr. Edwards was a partner in the Hale and Edwards Insurance Agency.
D.A. Edwards´ contributions to this community were numerous. He was a member of the administrative board and taught a Sunday school class at First United Methodist Church.
A charter member of Crosbyton Lions Club, Mr. Edwards was a former officer of the club and served at one time as deputy district governor of District 2-T2, Lions International.
Mr. Edwards received a 50-year Masonic pin Jan. 2, 1978, with the presentation being made by his son, Terry. He was a past master of Crosbyton Lodge no. 1020, A.F.&A.M. and the O´Donnell lodge and also was a past district deputy Grand Master of the 93rd District. He was a Scottish Rite Mason, a York Rite Mason, and a 32nd Degree KCCH.
Mr. Edwards was a 50 year member of Boy Scouts of America and was instrumental in the organization of Boy Scouting here. A member of the South Plains Council BSA executive board for many years, he was the holder of a Silver Beaver Award.
He served as finance chairman of Crosbyton Swimming Pool when it was constructed. He was a member of Crosbyton Senior Citizens and of Crosby County Historical Commission, along with a number of other organizations.
Before failing health curtailed his activities, he was involved in virtually all community events. "I just happened to land where the best people in the world live," Mr. Edwards told The Review about his home town earlier this year.
He had received numerous honors, including selection to "Who´s Who in the South and Southwest"
Services to the memory of Mr. Edwards were conducted at 4 p.m. Saturday in the First United Methodist Church here by the Rev. Johnnie Williams, pastor, and Loyd Hall, minister of the Church of Christ.
Masonic graveside rites were held at Crosbyton Cemetery. Adams Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
David Allison Edwards was born June 1, 1900 in Hamilton County. He and the former Florence Terry were married Sept. 1, 1925 in Lampasas. They moved to Crosbyton in 1931 from O´Donnell.
He attended North Texas State Normal (Now North Texas State University) in Denton, where he played basketball and baseball. Edwards earned a Bachelor´s Degree in Science and a MA Degree from Texas Tech University.
Survivors include the wife, Florence; a son, Terry Edwards of Las Cruces, N.M.; a daughter,Mrs. A.L. Dickinson of Travis Air Force Base, Calif.; three brothers, Carl Edwards of Gatesville, Wilbur Edwards of Lubbock and Glenn Edwards of Post; five sisters, Jannette Wren of Hughes Springs, Eula Tillison of Ennis, Elsie Thetford of Tacoma, Wash.; Beulah Smithee of Fort Worth, and Lyda McMeekin of Pearl; and four grandchildren.
