Biography

William Munsey Dorsey and wife, Lucy Ann Dorsey, both born in North Carolina, came to Ponder, Texas in 1906 when their son, Paul, was a little baby. Paul died in 1906. Their other children, Bowman, Murett, Madge and Vernon, were born while living at Ponder.

While living at Ponder, Mr. Dorsey farmed and raised cattle and was a rural mail carrier. They moved to Crosbyton in December, 1919. Mr. Dorsey worked for a Mr. Shaw a while, then he farmed about a year. They moved back into Crosbyton and he went to work for Mr. Mabe and R. E. Karr. In a short time, Dorsey bought Mabe out and he and Karr ran the grocery store until some time later when they sold it to M-System chain stores. After selling the grocery store, Dorsey put in a little school store.

Mrs. Lucy Ann Dorsey died in June, 1925 and is buried in Crosbyton cemetery.

All the Dorsey children attended Crosbyton schools. Bowman graduated from high school before they moved to Lubbock. After they moved to Lubbock Dorsey went into the cafe business. In 1929 Mr. Dorsey married Mrs. Mary Montgomery of Floydada.

Bowman entered the U.S. Army and while in service, he married Pat Thorpe. They have three daughters, Sharron, Carol and Linda. Bowman has retired and lives in Lubbock.

Murett married Veda Wootton in 1934 and they farmed and raised cattle on the Dickey land in the Mt. Blanco community several years before moving to Floyd County where he retired in 1974.

Madge finished school in Floydada and married John Key West. They farmed and raised cattle until he retired in 1976. They had four children, Ann, John M., Winfred (1939-1965) and Dale.

Vernon finished school in Floydada and married Elizabeth Luany Jackman of El Paso where he operated a grocery store. They had two children, Robert Vernon, Jr. and Elizabeth Ann.

W. M. Dorsey died January 27, 1963 and is buried in Crosbyton cemetery by his first wife, Lucy.

W.M. Dorsey, 82, Area Pioneer, Is Buried Here

William Munsey Dorsey, 82, pioneer Crosbyton resident, was buried in Crosbyton Cemetery Monday afternoon following funeral services in First Methodist Church of Floydada. He had made his home in Floydada since 1930.

Rev. Charles Luttrick, Floydada pastor, officiated at graveside services here as well as at the final rites in Floydada. Harmon Funeral Home of Floydada was in charge of arrangements.

Dorsey died at 2:20 a.m. Sunday at a Floydada hospital. He had been in failing health for some time, but became seriously ill only a short time before his death.

Coming to Crosbyton in the late ´teens, Dorsey operated a market here for a number of years and later a school store. After moving to Floydada he operated a grocery store until his retirement about 10 years ago. He had been coming to Crosbyton regularly the past few years selling honey, from hives which he owned.

Survivors include the wife; three sons, Murette of Floydada, Bowman of Lubbock and Vernon of Houston; a daughter, Mrs. Madge Key, Floydada; nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
