Biography

Hubert Curry was born May 20, 1909, at Hermleigh, Scurry Co., and moved here when his father, W.M. Curry, bought the Review in 1924. Crosbyton high valedictorian, he later attended McMurry College and the University of Missouri. He became Review publisher in 1945. He and his wif,e Mattie, have two daughters, Kay and Sylvia. He is past president of Lions Club, Chamber of Commerce, Band Boosters; former Democratic precinct chairman, director in Panhandle Press Assn, and West Texas Chamber. A Methodist, hehas served as chairman of official board. Fire Dept. 12 years. Currently he is chairman of Housing Authority.

Obituary

Hubert Curry, 70, veteran Crosby County editor newspaper publisher and writer, died Friday in the Crosbyton hospital. He had been in poor health for some time.

He at one time was publisher of the Ralls Banner, selling the paper to Ernest Joiner in the early 1950s.

Funeral services for Curry were held at 3 p.m. Sunday in Crosbyton First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Johnny Williams, pastor officiating. assisted by Loyd Hall, Church of Christ minister, and burial was in Crosbyton Cemetery under the direction of Adams Funeral Home.

Curry had been a Crosbyton civic leader for almost half a century.

He published The Review, the Crosbyton newspaper, from 1945, when he acquired it from his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter M. Curry, until 1966.

The Curry family´s ownership and publication of The Review spanned 42 years.

Curry served two terms as president of the Crosbyton Chamber of Commerce, was one of the founders of the Crosbyton Lions Club in 1936, and served as president of the West Texas Pioneers and Old Settlers Association, director of the Crosby County Pioneer Memorial Museum, member of the Crosby County Historical Commission and chairman of the Crosbyton Housing Authority during its early years in the area.

Curry was the first co-president of the Crosbyton Band Boosters, and headed numerous fund-raising drives in Crosbyton.

Born in Hermleigh in Scurry County, Curry´s family moved to the Crosbyton area in 1925.

He graduated from Crosbyton High School in 1926 and studied at McMurry College in Abilene and the University of Missouri.

In 1930, he became news editor of The Memphis News before returning to Crosbyton in 1931 to assist his parents in the publication of the Crosbyton newspaper.

Curry founded and operated Curry Printing (now Quality Printers) until his retirement four years ago.

Curry authored a book, &aquot;Sun Rising on the West, The Saga of Henry Clay and Elizabeth Smith" due for publication this fall. The book deals with the area´s first white settlers.

Curry and Mattie McDonald were married May 27, 1933 in Wellington.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Eugene (Kay) Fowler Jr. of Richardson and Mrs. Casey(Sylvia) Coats of Amarillo; a brother, Robert W. Curry of Pampa; a sister, Fern Heard of Fort Worth; and two grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mattie Olivia Curry, 79, of Crosbyton were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 28, 1990 at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Wendell Horn, pastor of First United Methodist Church, officiating.

Burial was in Crosbyton Cemetery under direction of Adams Funeral Home.

She died at 3:15 a.m. Thursday, July 26, 1990 at St. Mary of the Plains Hospital in Lubbock after a lengthy illness.

She was born in Limestone County May 29, 1911 and moved to Crosbyton in 1925. She graduated from Crosbyton High School in 1929.

She married Hubert Curry in Wellington May 27, 1933. He died July 6, 1979. She and her husband owned and operated the Crosbyton Review Newspaper until 1966.

She attended McMurry College, which granted her a teaching certificate. She received her bachelor´s degree in education from Texas Tech University. She taught in the Crosbyton Independent School District for 40 years.
