World War I Induction papers
Earl Sawyer was born October 31, 1887 in Hill County, Texas to John C. and Dora (Cole) Sawyer. John C. Jr. and wife had 10 children. In 1907 John Jr. and wife Dora bought land in Crosby County, Texas and moved there with children, Jennie, Annie, Joseph and Earl.
Earl served in World War I in France and upon returning home married Ethel Blassingame, daughter of Robert Franklin and Martha (Calvary)Blassingame, September 2nd. 1919. To this union three children were born: Robert B.,Marlin L., and Grace.
John C. died January 31, 1921 and is buried in Cone Cemetery, Crosby County, TX., along with his wife and the four children that came to West Texas with them, along with other family members.
The "s" was dropped from the Sawyers name around the turn of the century.

Ethel Blassingame Sawyer was born on September 4, 1899 near Eddy, Falls County, Texas to Robert Franklin "Dock" Blassingame, son of James Harrison Blassingame and Sarah "Sally" Elizabeth Merritt, and Martha Lucindy Calvery Blassingame , daughter of James Calvery and Jane Marr.
She was the last child born of 10 children (5 brothers and 4 sisters), and was the last to survive of the children. Approximately June 1918 the family moved from Eddy to the Farmer Community. On September 2, 1919 she married Earl Sawyer. They had three children; Robert Boyd, Marlin Lee and Grace (Ashley).
In the early 1950's she had the old farm house moved into Floydada and it was in Floydada that she worked at Arwine Drug Store for many years. She worked at the soda fountain at Arwine's and could really make a mean Sour Lime Drink, and fantastic chocolate milk shakes She also did most of the gift wrapping at Arwine's, wrapping beautiful packages for Christmas, other holidays, birthdays and other occasions.
Grandma could really make delicious butterscotch pies and fried chicken.
She loved music and playing the piano. She played for the school programs at Farmer, and also for the Methodist Church Servies at Farmer. The services were held in the school auditorium and both Methodist and Baptist used the auditorium for their services.
Ethel belonged to the Floydada Rebeckah Lodge where she also played the piano, and was a member of the Garden Club.

RALLS (Special) — Earl Sawyer, 54, of the Farmer community near Ralls, died unexpectedly of a heart attack at 7 o'clock tonight in his residence.
Mr. Sawyer, who came to Crosby county 32 years ago from Hill county, had worked on a tractor all of today. He went home and laid across a bed, complaining of pain. He died before a physician arrived.
Last rites will be read at 2:30 o'clock Thursday afternoon in Cone auditorium by Rev. Ernest Jennings of Dallas, Cumberland Presbyterian minister. Marr Funeral home will direct burial in Cone cemetery.
Survivors are the wife; two sons, Robert and Marlin; a daughter, Grace; and three sisters, Mrs. J.L. Files of Itasca, Miss Jennie Sawyer of Cone and Mrs. G.J. Ragle of Ralls.
Bearers will be R.D. Cox, Lester Cowan, Burl Priddy, Tom Reed, Ray Reed, Russell Noble, Joe Moore and Jack Robertson.

FLOYDADA (Special) — Services for Ethel B. Sawyer, 91, of Ralls will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bill Wright, pastor, officiating.
Burial will be in Cone Cemetery under direction of Carter-Adams Funeral Home of Ralls.
Mrs. Sawyer died Sunday night in Crosbyton Clinic Hospital after a lengthy illness.
She was born in Eddy and had lived in Cone and Floydada before moving to Ralls in 1990. She married Earl Sawyer in September 1919 in Crosby County. He died in 1941. She was a homemaker and a member of Rebekah Lodge and First United Methodist Church of Floydada. Two sons, Robert and Marlin, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a daughter, Grace Ashley of Ralls; nine grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; and eight great great grandchildren.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
