Biography

The first Black family that settled in Crosbyton was Fronie and Annie Mae Cole. Their daughter, Lela Mae, born in 1921 is thought to be the first Black child born in Crosbyton. Other children born to the Cole´s were Fronie Jr., Clea, Tessie Bell and Jean.

Annie Mae was born to Sam Moss and Prela Prowlie Moss in Whitney, TX on September 17, 1904. Annie was reared and educated in Whitney.

She left Whitney and moved west to Crosbyton, TX. She met and married Fronie Cole on April 21, 1921 in Crosbyton, TX. Fronie was born June 19, 1900. She remained in Crosbyton most of her life. She was a member of Greater Mt. Zion Baptist Church. She was also a homemaker. Annie moved to Amarillo, TX in 1997 to be cared for by her daughter, Lela Mae Sykes.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Fronie August 17, 1946; two sons, Fronie Jr., in 1990 and Cleotha "Clee" in May of 1992, and a daughter Tessie Bell Richard.

Annie departed this life on Friday, Sept. 10, 1999 at Vivian´s Nursing Center in Amarillo, TX. She left to cherish her memory her daughter, Lela Mae Sykes of Amarillo, TX; eleven grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren, several great great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

Memorial services were held on Monday, Sept. 13, 1999 at one o´clock p.m. at Greater Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Crosbyton, TX with Rev. H.L. Phillips officiating. Pallbearers were John Wallace, Gene Johnson, Charles Frater, Vance Coppage, Ricky Turner and Baron Johnson. Assisting with the service was Rev. Adams. Interment was in Mt. Zion Cemetery in Crosbyton, TX.

Obituary

Services for Annie Mae Cole, 94, of Crosbyton were held at 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 13, 1999, at Greater Mount Zion Baptist Church with Rev. H. L. Phillips, pastor, officiating.

Burial was in Mount Zion Cemetery under direction of Adams Funeral Home of Crosbyton.

She died Friday, Sept. 10, 1999, at Vivans Nursing Center in Amarillo.

She was born Sept. 17, 1904, in Whitney. She married Fronie Cole on April 21, 1921, in Crosbyton. She lived in Crosbyton most of her life before moving to Amarillo in 1997. She was a homemaker and a member of Greater Mount Zion Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Lela Mae Sikes of Amarillo; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren.
