PIONEER CONCHO WOMAN IS DEAD
Mrs. J. W. Ratchford Of Paint Rock Succumbs At Home Of Son
Paint Rock, July 18. Mrs. J. W. Ratchford, 82, a resident of Paint Rock and
Concho County for 55 years, died here tonight shortly before 10 o'clock at the
home of a son, R. W. Ratchford. Mrs. Ratchford, the widow of the late Major J.
W. Ratchford, came to Concho County with its first settlers in 1879. Major
Ratchford died in December, 1910.
She was the last immediate survivor of the late Mr. and Mrs.
Preston Rose, pioneer plantation owners in Victoria County. Major Ratchford was
a staff officer of General G. H. Hill, Convederate leader during the Civil War.
Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 5o'clock
from the home of R. W. Ratchford with the Rev. B. B. Hester, San Angelo pastor,
officiating. Interment will be in the Paint Rock Cemetery.
Survivors include five sons and three daughters. They are H.
H., D. W., and R. W., all of Paint Rock, and W. P., San Antonio and G. R.,
Monroe, La., and Mrs. Ed Fromme, Elgin, Miss Margaret Ratchford, San Antonio and
Miss Fannie Ratchford, Austin. Other survivors include 16 grandchildren and 5
great-grandchildren.

Mrs. J. W. Ratchford Buried At Paint Rock
Mrs. j. W. Ratchford 82, passed away at the home of her son R.
W. Ratchford about 10o'clock Wednesday evening after a short illness though she
had been an invalid for many years.
Mrs. Ratchford was the last immediate survivor of the late
Mr. and Mrs. Preston Rose whose home was in Victoria County. She was married at
the age of 18 to Major J. W. Ratchford and to them were born 9 children, 8 of
whom are living and all were present for the funeral excepting Rev. Geo.
Ratchford, of Monroe, La. the Ratchford family moved to Concho County in 1879
and have through the years been ideal citizens. Mother Ratchford belonged to the
type of the early settlers and knew how to appreciate her many friends who
reciprocated her love for them.
The survivors include 5 sons and two daughters. They are: H.
H., D. W., and R. W. of Paint Rock; W. P. of San Antonio; G. R. Ratchford of
Monroe, La; Mrs. Ed Fromme, of Elgin; Miss Margaret Ratchford, San Antonio; Miss
Fannie Ratchford of Austin. other survivors are 16 grandchildren and five great
grandchildren.
The funeral was conducted at the family residence at 5:30
Thursday with Rev. Guy Davis, Presbyterian minister, assisted by Rev. B. B.
Hester of San Angelo and Wm. M. Logan, local pastor, officiating. Interment was
in Paint Rock cemetery in the presence of a large crowd.- The Concho Herald.
