Formed August 21, 1876 by Texas Legislation from lands originally assigned to Bexar and Young Counties, Cochran County was named in honor of Robert E. Cochran, who died defending the Alamo. Cochran County would remain unorganized for nearly fifty years.
The birth of the county would not go without its share of difficulties, disagreements, feuds, and a measure of hostility. On May 6, 1924, in a second election, Morton was once again elected county seat and the last unorganized county in Texas would be organized.
