Reeves Chapel (UMC) & Cemetery
(Camp County, Texas)
15/July/2002

Directions: From Business {271}on the south side of Pittsburg, TX. Take Highway {556}west for 2 miles. Take county road {1519}west for 2 miles. Turn left onto the blacktop road {3326}, (A sign as one turns left has the church name and insignia).

These lands of about 1000 acres from left to right once belonged to Reeves and Bailey's. Drive about 3/10th's of a mile up the road and the church building and cemetery are on the right. This place known as Reeves Chapel-land was formally donated by Counce & Salina (Bailey) Reeves in the late 1860's and progressed to the lovely place it is today.

Entering the gate beside the church building and walking easterly to the front stones nearest the road is where we began, (Many rows very uneven). It appears that the earliest burial was in 1865, whereas the founders came as early as 1858 to this place. We hope we caught every stone but if not please forgive human error.

It is said by descendants and friends of this community that Agrippa Reeves, brother to Counce and husband of Martha (Bailey) Reeves is buried on former Reeves lands in this area.

It is said by descendants and friends of this community that Elijah Josephus Bailey (1803-1866), is buried on the former Old Bailey Homestead across the road Northeast of Reeves Chapel not far from where {1519} intersects with Reeves Chapel Road and goes to the John & Francis Bailey Homestead. It may be that the John Bailey Homestead once was the Old Place. Information has been lost through the generations. About half way between {556/1519} intersection and Reeves Chapel Road, on the south side of the road is a cattle gate, this is where the John W. & Francis (Boyce) Bailey Homestead use to be. It is now all in trees planted by the current owners.

Much Thanks, to the caretakers of Reeves Chapel for their assistance as well as many other people from Pittsburg.  If your ever in the Pittsburg area, you might want to see Reeves Chapel.

Thanks also to the people on the Rootsweb-Camp Co.and Upshur Co. pages.
