C. Joe “Cappy Joe” Bright

C. Joe “Cappy Joe” Bright of Port O’Connor, passed away Friday, Dec. 27, 2002 at Citizens Medical Center in Victoria.

Memorial services and reception were held on Monday, Dec. 30 at the Port O’Connor Community Center.

Joe Bright was the owner of the Intercoastal Lumber and Supply in Port O’Connor and was a prominent builder in Calhoun County for more than 30 years.
He was also a former president of the Port O’Connor Chamber of Commerce.
Born and raised in Houston, Joe Bright found early fame as a star end of the Houston Lamar High School AAAA State Champs in 1953. He was a member of the Houston Post’s 1953 all-district football team and the Houston Chronicle’s 1953 all-city team. Following these high school exploits, Joe Bright was then recruited by the infamous Paul “Bear” Bryant to play for Texas A&M in 1954.
An avid outdoorsman and a pioneering billfisherman, Bright was a founding member of the Gulf Coast Conservation Association and was co-founder of the POCO Bueno Billfishing Tournament held each July in Port O’Connor. He was president of the Big Gun Huntin’ and Fishin’ Club and was deacon of the Church of the Great Outdoors.

Joe Bright is survived by his wife Shelby Allen Bright of Port O’Connor; his brother and sister-in-law, Ray E. and Jan Bright of San Clemente, Ca.; his brother-in-law, Vince Thompson of Waimea, FL; his sister-in-law Judy Thompson of Waimea, FL; his daughter, Brenda J. Bright and son-in-law Thomas L. Dumm and children Irene and Jimmy Bright Dumm of Amherst, MA; his son and daughter-in-law Randy O. and Kelly Bright of Richmond and Randy’s son Joey Bright; his son C. J. “Jody” Bright Jr. of Kona, HI; and Jody’s daughter Tawny Bright; and his son Robert E. Bright of San Diego, CA.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be sent to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 102454, Atlanta, GA 30368-2454.
