Ledford ~ ca 1877

Ledford was founded by Dr. Lafayette Ledford in 1877. He built a store and residence on two acres of land just west of Clark’s Chapel community. He established a post office in 1899 and served as postmaster. Another general store was begun, and two cotton gins were constructed in Clark’s Chapel along with a blacksmith shop. When Dr. Ledford made application for a post office, he listed Clark’s Chapel as the population to be served. In 1903 the post office was discontinued and changed to Lockhart. Dr. Ledford sold his property and moved to Victoria. The little town kept its name as Ledford, but over the years it, too, faded and became a part of Clark’s Chapel community. Ledford was located six miles southeast of Lockhart.
