Caldwell County, Callahan - Ross Family Texas Pioneers
Callahan - Ross Family
The original of this picture is very, very teeny, but there are so many central Texans who are related to the people in this group, I thought it worth trying to enlarge and make more widely available.

Callahan - Ross Family Reunion. Lockhart, Caldwell Co., Texas, ca. 19 August 1924

. Includes descendents and relatives of Andrew Jackson Callahan (1837 - 1928) and Alice Elizabeth Ross Callahan (1853 - 1891). Families include Callahan, Ross, Billings, Walker, Hesskew, Dubberly, Smith, Boucher representing settlement chiefly in Lavaca, Gonzales, Caldwell, Gillespie, and Kerr counties. Descendents of this group may be able to identify individuals. Andrew Jackson Callahan, in his typical vest, stands at the right. A number of other snapshots and formal photographs, from the E. B. White Studio in Lockhart, exist that document this reunion which lasted for several days. The studio photos are dated 8-19-24.
--Harold Billings

The boys in the picture are also Great grandsons of Abner M. Ross and Tabitha Boucher Ross of Lockhart, Caldwell County, Texas.

I'm attaching a picture that I don't believe I've shared with you before. This is interesting in that it shows members of several pioneer Hill Country families, some of whose grandparents had moved north from Lavaca and Gonzales counties, or from the midwest, into the Lockhart area and the ranching country north of Fredericksburg, between Harper and Ingram in Kerr County. These are chiefly Callahan, Walker, Billings family members.

Pictured are Coy Callahan, Weldon Walker, Vernon Walker, Charles Callahan, Lionel Walker, Olin Walker, Ross Billings, Lawrence Smith.

Coy was the son of Fred and (I think) Josie Jackson Callahan; the Walkers are all sons of John and Kate Callahan Walker; Harold Ross Billings (my father) who was the grandson of W.C. and Mary Jane Hesskew Billings, and the son of Link and Susie Callahan Billings; and Lawrence Smith was the son of Fred and Bertie Callahan Smith -- daughter of A. J. and Alice Ross Callahan, as was Kate Walker.

(Olin was the father of my cousin Oleane Walker Barrett who has done so much work on the Callahan and related families.)
