Forrest until the capture of Fort Donelson; later commissioned a colonel and a general officer; raid into Ohio and Indiana; blinded and captured; rancher in Llano County and operator of a general land agency from which Johnson accumulated wealth despite his blindness. An accompanying Ms. (4 p.) contains excerpts from a biography written by Colonel Ed Starling, a Federal officer. Dictation recorded by John William Hall.

NOTES: Papers concern the business and personal affairs of the families of Christian Giesecke and Adolf Fuchs, both with professional, intellectual, and artistic backgrounds, who emigrated from Germany to Texas in the 1840s and whose family lines were joined by the marriage of their grandchildren Walter Christian Giesecke and Ulrike Matern. The collection contains much genealogical material in the form of charts as well as reminiscences. Included is Walter Christian Giesecke's trail drive diary (1882) and Albert Giesecke's travel diary (1845) as well as a songbook created by Adolf Fuchs with music and words, mostly in German. Adolf Fuchs was a minister in Mecklenburg, Germany, who became a music teacher in Texas when he failed to prove successful at farming; Christian Giesecke was a mining engineer in Clausthal, and his son Albert was a surveyor, a profession he followed in Texas as well as farming.

NOTES: Papers consist of letters written and received in Perote Prison in Mexico by Woods and his friends (1843) and also contain a church membership certificate for Woods's mother (1829) and two letters from a descendant Andy Glimp (1890). In addition transcripts and photostats of the Perote letters as well as of land titles and other family documents are included and some handwritten autobiographical notes. Woods, son of Austin's Colony Old Three Hundred settler Zadock Woods, was wounded in the Dawson Massacre during the Battle of Salado (September 1842) and taken as a prisoner to Mexico, where he died in Perote Prison.
