At a regular communication of Valley Lodge of Free and accepted Masons, held in Hamilton on the 13^th October, 1855:  it being announced that our beloved brother, Logan Vandever, departed this life, at Valley Rose, in the State of Louisiana, on the 2^nd September last—On motion, bros. Wm. H. Magill and Thomas Moore were appointed to draw up a brief biographical sketch of our deceased brother.

Brother Vandeveer was born in Casey county, Kentucky, on the 8^th January, 1815, and being an enterprising, energetic youth, emigrated to Texas at the early age of 18.

In 1836 he joined the gallant band of Volunteers from Bastrop county, under the command of Capt. Jesse Billingsly.  He distinguished himself in the memorable battle of San Jacinto, where he received a severe  wound.  Though wounded, he fought on gallantly to the end of that sanguinary conflict.  From that time to the day of his demise, he was ever ready to defend Texas against the savage Indian, or the equally treacherous Mexican.

In 1838 Bro. V. was married to Miss Lucinda Mayes, of Bastrop County.

In 1850 he had the misfortune to mourn the loss of his excellent companion.  She left him five motherless daughters, one of whom has since died—leaving at his death four orphan daughters.  Bro. V. was a warm advocate and a liberal patron of education, and spared no expense in educating his daughters.  He was the embodiment Itself of benevolence, as hundreds now living know.  He was a man of extraordinary industry and energy.  In a word, he was one of the best specimens of “Nature’s Noblemen!”

In his death his children have lost an indulgent father, his neighbors, and especially the poor, a kind friend; and Burnet county one of its most enterprising and useful citizens.  It was therefore,

Resolved by Valley Lodge, that we bow with humble submission to the will of our heavenly Father in this sad bereavement; and that we deeply sympathise with his disconsolate family.

Resolved, that a copy of the foregoing be sent to the Gazette and Times in Austin for publication, and that a copy be furnished the family of our deceased brother.
