S. B. Norwood was called by death at his home in Burnet on May 15th, 1947. His funeral service was conducted by Rev. J. P. Kidd
of austin, pastor of the Presbyterian Church of this place at 3:00
o'clock Saturday afternoon, May 17th, in the Northington Funeral
Chapel. Burial was in the Burnet Cemetery. The active
pallbearers were Ben L. King, Wilburn Garrett, James Dickens, and three grandsons, Charles Harrell, Norwood Farris and Joe Farris. Honorary pallbearers were the co-workers of Mr. Norwood while he was President of the Burnet Chamber of Commerce, and the flower girls were Dorothy Corder, Ann Donnovan, Mary Nell Norris, and Geneva Withers.
Mr. Norwood was born November 18th, 1863 in Norwoodsville, Arkansas. At the age of four years, following the death of his father, Dr. James Norwood, he came to Clarksville, Texas with his mother, and in 1870 they moved to Detroit, Texas.
Mr. Norwood first studied law, but later entered the newspaper business and was associated with George B. Loving
on the old Ft. Worth Gazette for a time. He then moved back to
Detroit and established that town's first newspaper, "The New
Era." Mr. Norwood stemed from a family of many famous writers,
extending back for several generations, among whom was Robert Norwood,
author of a number of religious books, and who was regarded as a poet
of the goodness of life. The subject of this sketch had several
short stories and quite a number of poems published. One of his
daughters, Mrs. Erva Ann Sherrard,
has followed in her father's footsteps and is the author of numerous
articles and poems, published in the Dallas Morning News and various
magazines.
In 1887 Mr. Norwood was united in marriage to Miss Maggie Dean of Detroit, who preceded him in death in 1944.
On account of a breakdown in his health, Mr. Norwood sold his newspaper
at Detroit and with his family moved to Emma, Crosby County, where he
served as merchant, Postmaster, and County Judge. He moved his
family to Burnet in 1909, while he continued as a traveling salesman
for a few years, later engaging in the mercantile business here.
Mr. Norwood had great faith in Burnet County and its resources, and
took an active interest in the progress of his adopted town and
community, serving as President of the Chamber of Commerce and trustee
of the Burnet Independent School District. It was during his
trusteeship that one of our present commodious school buildings was
erected.
Advancing age caused Mr. Norwood to retire from the mercantile
business, when he purchased a small ranch four miles west of Burnet,
where he and his wife resided for a considerable time, but later they
sold this property and moved back to town to spend their declining
years.
Mr. and Mrs. Norwood are survived by the following children: R. B. Norwood of Oklahoma City, Mrs. C. D. Harrell of Austin, Mrs. Ben H. Sharpe of Austin, Mrs. W.S. Farris of Purmela, Texas, Mrs. Ina Overstreet of Stephenville, and Mrs. Erva Ann Sherrard of Burnet.
