Family-Placed Obituary
The
family of Nelson Lewis, 68, would like to make you aware of his
graduation from the flesh this past Wednesday, March 24, 2004 at 5:42
a.m. Nelson has gone to be with his Lord and loved ones and now stands
with that faithful cloud of witnesses that surround and encourage us.
Nelson was a 4th generation Texan, a direct descendant of Henry Thomas "Crip" Lewis with family roots in the Smithwick and Spicewood area. He
was a faithful member of the Lord's church and was known for his
gracious and benevolent behavior. His special gift was emphasizing the
significance of even the lowliest of those created in the image of God.
He understood and gloried in God's forgiveness through Christ.
Nelson
was instrumental with the organization and formation of the Marble
Falls National Bank (now known as American Bank of Texas, N.A.). He was
very active as a director from its inception in 1980 until the time of
his death. Nelson, along with his cousin Dale Fox helped start and
direct "The Camp of the Hills" in 1991. The camp is dedicated to
helping inner city as well as low-income children to experience the
love of God in a natural Hill Country setting. More than 6000 kids have
been able to participate in this experience since Nelson first donated
land to this work.
Nelson was considered an "outstanding" board member
who served the Marble Falls School District from 1976 to 1982. He had
great concern for quality and sound education and he gave generously to
many efforts to help and encourage the youth.
Nelson was married to
Tommie LaVerne Sassin in November of 61. He and Tommie had four
children, Hank, Tracy, Julie and Jake. Nelson loved his children and
his four beautiful grandchildren: Chloe, Jade, Caitlin and Keenan
Nelson Lewis.
Nelson is survived by his wife, Tommie; son, Hank and his
wife, Janet; daughter, Tracy and her husband, J.G. Crouch, by his
youngest daughter, Julie; and youngest son, Jake. He is also survived
by his one brother, Jesse Lewis; sisters, Bonnie Pope and June DeSpain
all of Smithwick, and Peggy Cain of Marble Falls.
Nelson was preceded
in death by his parents, Henry Owen and Effie Henry Lewis of Smithwick
and by one sister, Patsy Brim.
Nelson was born June 7, 1935, and
graduated from Marble Falls High School in 1952. Nelson was active in
many aspects of business-the majority of his work was done in
underground utility. Nelson was also very active in local politics,
A.A., and the Henry Thomas Lodge of Smithwick.
Nelson's life will be
celebrated Saturday, March 27, 2004, at the Smithwick Church of Christ
at 10:00 a.m., followed with body burial in the Smithwick Cemetery
following the celebration.
Visitation will be at Smithwick Church of
Christ Friday, March 26 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. The church is located 10
miles East of Marble Falls on FM 1431.
In lieu of flowers, donations
should be made to "Camp of the Hills", 1552 County Road 344, Marble
Falls, Texas 78654. Arrangements under the direction of Clements-Wilcox
Funeral Home.
