Ryburn
Bowden, 87, and a citizen of the Dobyville community in Burnet County
for 61 years, died in the Rollins-Brook Hospital Thursday, December 1,
1938. He had been seriously ill for several weeks before his death.
Mr.
Bowden was a native of Jonesville, Virginia, where he was born July 22,
1851. He lived there until 1877 when he and his wife and two small
children came to Texas by wagon train in the company with five other
families, the Youngs, Warners, Webbs, Garretts, and Shelburns. They
settled near Lake Victor and in the community of Dobyville, erected
their homes, a church and school.
Ryburn Bowden is the last of
this pioneer group to be called by death, with the exception of Mr. S.
A. Word of Lampasas who counts himself as one of the group because he
lived as a neighbor before moving to Lampasas a few years ago.
Mr.
Bowden married Miss Catherine Garrett July 10, 1873 in Jonesville,
Virginia. After he came to Texas, two sons, John and George Bowden, and
two daughters, Mrs. Emma Eudora and Mrs. Susan Garrett, died and were
buried in the Dobyville cemetery. Mary C. Bowden, his wife, died
October 11, 1919, and was also buried at Dobyville cemetery.

6, 1920 Mr. Bowden married Daisy McFarland of Liberty Hill. He is
survived by his widow, Mrs. Daisy Bowden; six children, Mrs. Alice
Poindexter of Big Spring; Mrs W.E. Ruckman of Kenedy; Mrs. Daisy B.
Miller of Dallas; Ward Bowden of Lake Victor; Rufus Bowden of Burnet;
and Fred Bowden of Davis, Colorado; two step-children, F. W. McFarland
of Georgetown and W.C. McFarland of Liberty Hill, and one sister, Mrs.
F. G. Morris of Nortonville, Ky.
Known all over this section,
Mr. Bowden was a man who was successful as a stockman and farmer, stood
for the right in all things, was a worthwhile citizen and leaves a host
of friends.
