The Genealogical Society of Aransas County meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at the Elementary School on Live Oak Street. All visitors are welcome. Membership dues are $15 per year for single persons or $20 for married couples. Currently, no newsletter is being published by the GSAC, so there is little benefit to membership for those outside the county. However, the GSAC is the host of this website and we hope to assist researchers in Aransas County by making data available on the Internet, publishing queries and doing lookups. Researchers are encouraged to submit abstracted data, ancestor charts, family histories and biographical sketches for the GSAC's files. The Aransas County Public Library, 701 E. Mimosa, Rockport, TX 78382, telephone 361-790-0153, has a small genealogy section containing books, family histories, video tapes, an IGI index and microfiche reader/printer, area cemeteries, and obituaries. Through the efforts of the Library, GSAC and donations of others, this collection is growing. The County Clerk, located in the Courthouse, 301 N. Certified copies may be obtained by sending a written application to the Clerk, together with a $5 search fee and costs of the copies. For current fees and costs, call the Clerk's office. The District Clerk's office, also located in the Courthouse, has district and county court-at-law civil and criminal court records. County records prior to 1871, beginning in 1836, are stored on microfilm and may be obtained through inter-library loans from Texas A&M University in Kingsville, Texas and the LDS in Utah. Birth and death records may also be obtained from the Texas Department of Health, Bureau of Vital Statistics, 1100 West 49th Street, Austin, TX 78756-3199, telephone 512-458-7111. Adjoining Counties You should be aware that there are several counties in close proximity in this area -- Aransas, San Patricio, Nueces, Calhoun, and Refugio. In searching for your ancestors, do not overlook researching the adjoining counties as well.
