Notes for ELIJAH MADDOX:
Elijah was a pioneer Baptist preacher who was born in Virginia, moved to Tennessee and came on up to Franklin County, Illinois by 1837. Nothing is known of the parentage of Elijah as he was supposedly found on a family's doorstep one night and this family gave him his name. The family into whose hands he fell did not appreciate him, and made of him a slave. He only went to school one day in all his life. By 1811 he and his wife were attending Mt. Olivet (Mt. Juliet) Baptist Church in Wilson County, Tennessee. (Others attending this church were William M. Moore and Sarah Moore). Mt Olivet Church was founded in 1801. Elijah moved to the community called Cedar Grove, four miles north of Lebanon, Tennessee, and there he helped found the old Cedar Grove Baptist Church in 1813, and was made the first preacher there, serving until 1841. Besides this he also did other pastoral and evangelistic work. He died in 1866, during the time of the Civil War, in the home of Foster Tucker and was buried at his expense in the old Tucker graveyard. He was 92 years old.

Chancery Court Records, Wilson Co., Tn. 1850-1854

At the time of the marriage, the defendant was about 82 years old, and Elizabeth was about 60. The said Elijah MADDOX has given the property of the said Elizabeth to his son, Felix MADDOX. Said Felix has made the statement that if Elizabeth eats, she will have to ask him for it. She is seeking a divorce and her property. 8 Dec. 1852
