Truck Mishap Claims Life of Local Woman; Companion Is Injured

One person was killed and another injured when a pickup truck in which they were riding over turned on a curve near Glenville, Kentucky, in McLean County at 2 a.m. Tuesday.

Mrs. Flora Campbell, 31, 937 Breckenridge St, driver of the truck, was pronounced dead on arrival at the Owensboro- Daviess County Hospital a short time later. William T Horton, 38, Route 1, Stanley, received head injuries.

Horton was reported in good condition at the hospital last night. His injury was described as a head laceration.

Horton told investigating State Trooper, Raymond Gray, that Mrs. Campbell was driving the truck which was headed west on KY 140 approximately 1 1/2 miles from Glenville when the mishap occurred.

According to Trooper Gray, Mrs. Campbell probably died instantly. She received a fractured skull and internal injuries.

The wreck was discovered approximately one hour after it happened by Homer Fairchild, brother of Mrs. Campbell and driver for the Owensboro cab company, who was going home from work to the home of his parents at Glenville. Mrs. Campbell was also apparently going there. Fairchild found Horton and the body of his sister still pinned in the truck, about three miles from her destination.

Fairchild reported he did not know anyone was in the wrecked truck when he stopped to investigate and discovered the pair.

Horton and Mrs. Campbell were taken to the Owensboro-Daviess County Hospital in a Muster Funeral Home ambulance.

Mrs. Campbell, born in McLean County, had lived in Owensboro for the past twenty years.

She is survived by her husband, SFC John Campbell, of Fort Sill, Oklahoma; one son, John Richard Evitts, McLean County; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Fairchild, Route 2, Calhoun; three brothers, Raymond Fairchild, Dallas, Texas, and Homer and Clarence Fairchild, both of Owensboro, and one sister, Mrs. Marie Bowen, McLean County.

The body is at the Owensboro Funeral Home.

In 1983, Wally retired from the Postal Service and the Whalens moved to a farm in Alexandria, Wilson County, Tennessee. They named their farm Shiloh Acres.

After leaving the Army with an Honorable Discharge, Ann started with the Postal Service in 1976. She transferred from the West Palm Beach PO to the Nashville PO and is a supervisor there.

Wally joined the Navy when he was just 17 and went right into WW II. He was a signalman and was given the nickname "Flags". Wally was aboard the USS Yorktown on the salvage crew when the great carrier was torpedoed and sunk. He received a special commendation for his bravery. Wally was a Chief Petty Officer, Signalman Corp. He served on the following ships during WWII: USS Little Bighorn, USS Oglala; USS Charger; USS Enterprise; USS Hornet; USS Buck; USS Detroit; USS C16498; USS New Orleans; USS Wasp; USS Portland; USS St Louis; USS Vincennes; USS Hammon; USS Edsel; USS Roe; Lion III; and, the USS Yorktown.

Wally tells of the time he was "loaned" to the Coast Guard and was on patrol in Biscayne Bay, Miami, Florida. At that time, strict blackouts were enforced on the American coastlines. A US Navy 'tincan' sliced the Coast Guard cutter in half. Wally had gone to sleep on the chart table and rolled off the table into the water. He received a special pass to 'march down Biscayne Blvd in his skivvies', having lost all his uniforms when the cutter went down.

Another story he tells is of being arrested by the SPs for being in the restricted women's side of the Casaba in Africa. He was thrown in a POW camp, given a shirt with a target painted on it, and marched up and down the compound all day to marching music from a record player. Needless to say, he was happy to be released back to the Navy.

Wally received his discharge on September 9, 1945. (Navy service number 287 26 30) He returned to Kentucky, where he and his brothers, Charles and Elmo, opened Whalen Coal Company.

At a later date, Wally moved to Owensboro, Daviess County, Kentucky. He built his own home on Carpenters Lake in Daviess County. He worked as a manager at Blockers in Owensboro, Kentucky, then moved to Charles Todd Uniforms and Linen, first as a manager, then as a trouble-shooter for the company.

When Wally moved his family to Tennessee, he again remodeled and built onto the existing home himself.
