Generation No. 6

24.  WILLIAM PETER6 COOMES (WILLIAM5, WILLIAM4, THOMAS3, RICHARD THOMAS2, RICHARD1) was born August 20, 1801 in Nelson County, Kentucky, and died November 19, 1893 in McLean  County, Kentucky.  He married (1) MARTHA ANN HITE February 14, 1838 in Nelson County, Kentucky.  She was born 1817, and died in McLean County, Kentucky.  He married (2) ELIZABETH JANE PEYTON September 23, 1843 in Daviess County,  Kentucky, daughter of PEYTON and SARAH.  She was born September 08, 1826 in Kentucky, and died April 16, 1902.

Notes for WILLIAM PETER COOMES:

William Peter Coomes married Martha Hite in 1838. Seth Thomas performed the marriage, and James Lemon was listed as surety for the marriage bond. The marriage record states that William Peter and Martha were both over twenty-one years of age at the time of their marriage.

William first married 1) Martha Hite and, 2) Elizabeth J Peyton

William Peter showed up on the tax roles in Daviess County, Kentucky in 1842 as owning two horses. They were living in the area covered by St Lawrence Parish in eastern Daviess County. William Peter and Martha's oldest daughter was baptized there in 1839. In 1854, a part of Daviess County was separated to form what is now McLean County, Kentucky. It was in this area that William Peter listed his age as 34 and his place of birth as Indiana. In the 1860 Census, he gave his age as 50 and his place of birth as Kentucky. In the 1870 census he gave his age as 54 and place of birth as Illinois. Family 'tradition' has it that he ran away from being a bonded servant - which was a very serious offense in those times. It is thought he gave all this confusing information to keep anyone from locating him.

William Peter was one of the first settlers of the area now known as Beech Grove. Their farm was located about two or three miles northeast of Beech Grove, Kentucky, on what is now known as Bohannon Road.

Sometime in the Fall of 1863, Confederate raiders plundered the farm of William Peter and family. They took all the meat from the smokehouse, ran off what cattle they couldn't take with them, took the blankets and quilts off the beds and pretty much confiscated everything they owned. Louis Phillip Coomes, fourth child of William Peter, was so incensed that he went into Owensboro, Kentucky and joined the 35th Mounted Kentucky Infantry on September 15. 1863.

The 1860 McLean County census lists the family as follows, with nine children at home:

Coomes  Wm         50

        Elizabeth        34

        Mary Ellen     19

        Louis P           16

        Sarah Ann     14

        Thaddeous    12

        Wm W           8

        Laura V          6

        Lucy Ann      5

        Felix Athey    2

        Susan F          1

The 1880 McLean County, Kentucky census lists 3 children at home and a granddaughter:

Coomes  Wm         67

       Elizabeth        63

        Felix                23

        Florence         18

        George           17

        Josephine      15

        Matilda          12

        Mary              13 (grand-daughter)

William Peter's genealogy is without question the most complete of any of the Coomes families in Kentucky.  William named many of his children after those of Thaddeus Coomes, our own ancestor, as did Thaddeus name his children after William's.

Another Daviess County obituary notes that "William and a man name McDaniel" were the first settlers of that region [Beech Grove] of present-day McLean County.  St Benedict's Catholic Church no longer stands, but was the seat of Catholicism in early McLean County, often additionally serving the membership of the distant St Lawrence community as well.

NOTE:  A confusing issue with this family is the reference of a birth locale in Illinois in both the 1870 and 1880 census, and of parentage in Virginia .  This is the only Coomes family listed this way.  We do know that Thaddeus Carl COOMES, s/o Thaddeus & Nancy, was born in Springfield, Illinois; but, cannot explain how or why the family was there.  I suspect that both William Peter and Thaddeus Carl were brothers, and that they both went to Illinois for a short time just before the 1870 census.

One of the Oldest Citizens Passes Away

Came to Daviess County Eighty Years Ago - An Interesting Family Record

Mr. Felix Coomes, one of the oldest inhabitants of Daviess County, died December 10, at his home near Knottsville, where he has lived for the past fifty-three years. Mr. Coomes was the son of William Coomes, a pioneer of Kentucky, and was born in Nelson County in 1908. He removed to this part of the county about eighty years ago, where Owensboro now stands, and lived there until he married Margaret A Head, daughter of William Head, nearly seventy years ago. His wife died ten years ago. This worthy couple had born to them and reared nine children, seven boys and two girls, viz: Charles W, James E, Eliza J, Ignatius, Felix A, Thomas M, Mary D, Henry R, and Francis F, all of whom still live to mourn his loss. All followed him in his last of many journeys to old St Lawrence Church, where they were all baptized and received the faith that still holds them all members of that Church. Mr. Coomes was a Catholic and a Democrat, an affectionate husband, a kind father, an honest, upright and charitable neighbor, winning a circle of friends as wide as he was known. He was confined to his bed only a short time, and passed away gently when the frosts of ninety winters extinguished the fires of life. Of his nine children all are married except one son and two daughters, who remain faithful to him to the end and knew only the one home where they were born.

In an old Catholic prayer book, belonging to Mr. Coomes and printed in Philadelphia by James Carey in 1800, this interesting record is carefully inscribed in the leaf:

"Register of Ages - William Coomes was born March the 13th, 1769, Rachael Coomes was born October 9, 1775. Their children and their ages: Teresa Coomes was born September 7, 1797, Charles Coomes was born January 20, 1799, Elizabeth Coomes born October 1, 1800, William Coomes, August 20, 1801, Mary Margaret Coomes born August 19, 1803, Enoch Ignatius Coomes born March 9, 1805, Charity Barbara Coomes born January 24, 1807, Felix Coomes was born November 21, 1808, Benita Coomes was born October 10, 1810, Charity Coomes was born February 8, 1813, Stephen Coomes was born October 25, 1815.

This is the register of the family of Mr. Coomes' parents.

Felix was among the earliest settlers of the Knottsville and Saint Lawrence communities, where he remained the rest of his life. His father willed him lot  #10 in Owensboro, and a Negro girl named Elizabeth.

Notes for BENEDICT (BENITA) COOMES:

Benedict D. COOMES 50,63,66,67,89,98,99,106 (Nelson Co, 10 Oct 1810-1 Dec 1882 near Owensboro, bur in an unmarked family cemetery on the Coomes homestead 4mi south of Owensboro on the Livermore Road [reported as the present corner of Frederica St & J.R. Miller Blvd - where Wal Mart now stands) md @ Daviess Co, 20/22 Apr 1840, Corrilla M. FORD 66,67,98,99,106 (Caldwell Co, 10 Jun 1819-14 Dec 1894 of typhoid @ Daviess Co), sister of Joshua G. FORD 66, Editor of the Owensboro Monitor, who removed to Tennessee.  Ben came to Daviess Co abt 1840, well after his brothers were already established in the county.  Ben received 70 acres of timbered lands from his father.

Corilla Ford's obituary states that she was a "staunch Methodist" all her life, and that she was "born and reared" in Caldwell County.

Although these brothers, and sister Sarah, are not seen in the 1870 census, not all are mentioned in their father's will.  Their mother's obituary confirms they were still living by 1894.

Felix’s obituary lists a family Bible record for his brother Benedict as "Bonita" [which like "Bennet", is French for Benedict] providing birth and death dates [12 Oct 1810-1 Dec 1882] which are different than other dates found for Benedict.  These dates match the data found in wife Corilla's obituary.

Melissa Carver reports reading a news article which stated that both Benedict & Corilla’s remains were removed to Mater Dolorosa Cemetery when the city expanded.  The remains of a daughter were also moved near her husband’s grave on Mt Saint Joseph [St Alphonsus Cem].

Notes for HILARY DRURY:

Hilary Drury came with his widowed mother to the Cox's Creek Settlement in Nelson County, Kentucky, in 1808.  His mother, Mary Goesborough Drury, died on August 12, 1838, at the age of 77 years, at the Daviess County, Kentucky  home of her son.

Hilary Drury having previously bought a farm near the site of St Lawrences Church in Daviess County, Kentucky, and prepared a pioneer home, he brought his family to it in 1830. On that farm he lived until his death  on August 6, 1872. His wife, Teresa Coomes Drury, survived him by six years and died at the same homestead.
