Generation No. 1

1. JOSEPH1 CLAYTON died 1824 in Nelson County, Kentucky. He married ELEANOR.

Notes for JOSEPH CLAYTON:

In 1785 a league of 60 families was formed in Maryland, pledging to immigrate to Kentucky within a specified time period. The first twenty-five families left in the spring of that year and later the same spring arrived in Nelson County, Kentucky, at a place called Goodwin's Station, which is near the present community of Boston. This was the nearest fortified post to their actual destination of land on Pottinger's Creek. After arriving the men left the women and children at the Post and set out to claim their lands some 12 to 15 miles southeast of the post. These very careful arrangements were necessary because of the Indian problems. The families originated from St Mary's and Prince George's County in Maryland. The Joseph Clayton family is one of these families. Joseph Clayton arrived in Nelson County by at least October 3, 1793, as he is listed on the court records as a bondsman for the marriage of George Clark and Sarah Brothers. His daughters were older than his sons and married first. The sons all married a few years after arrival in Kentucky, but nothing is known about the mother.

Matross was a nickname given to Joseph when he served in the Revolutionary War. He was an assistant to an artillery gunner - a matross - and the name stuck.

vi. MARY JANE CLAYTON, b. 1877, Kentucky.

19. FRANCIS LEMUEL3 CLAYTON (JOHN "JACK"2, JOSEPH1) was born November 03, 1845 in Bardstown, Nelson County, Kentucky, and died 1897 in Owensboro, Daviess County, Kentucky. He married (1) ANNA M "ANNIE" SIMS September 10, 1864. She was born June 18, 1843 in Marion County, Kentucky. He married (2) JESSIE WASHBURN January 14, 1877, daughter of WILLIAM WASHBURN. She was born February 1845 in Owensboro, Daviess County, Kentucky.

Notes for FRANCIS LEMUEL CLAYTON:

Francis Lemuel Clayton was the youngest son of John and Maria Hayden Clayton. He was reared on his father's farm, attending school in the winter until he turned 15. On September 25, 1861 he enlisted in Company G, 10th Kentucky Infantry as a drummer boy. He was discharged after twenty-one months because of disability. The next two years he farmed. Next he opened a saloon at Loretto, Marion County, Kentucky, where his Uncle William was living. After two years he moved to Daviess County, Kentucky and clerked for Henry Reimart's interest and in March 1881 opened Lem Clayton's Sample room and Billiard Parlor. It was the finest business of its type in the city.

In the latter part of his life he took the Keeley cure for alcoholism and sent a card to the newspaper praising the Keeley Institute and exclaiming the merits of its curative powers. Lem was operated on for a leg tumor and the leg was amputated at the knee.

When Francis Lemuel Clayton died in 1897, his obituary described his life of professional gambling, poker being his forte. He was described as completely honest and not an enemy in the world. He had quietly given away a vast amount of money to needy individuals. His funeral was held at St Stephens Church in Owensboro, Kentucky.

Notes for FRANKLIN L "FRANCIS" CLAYTON:

Franklin L Clayton and Sally Barnett Clayton moved from Nelson County, Kentucky to Daviess County, Kentucky in 1852.

Uncle Frank, as he was known, displayed his kindly character and amiable disposition to all. He was an old time staunch Democrat, who never acknowledged defeat. Mr Clayton was a great admirer of Kentucky horseflesh. The Daviess County Fair gave him a chance to judge the entries. He seldom missed a Kentucky Derby. Once at the county fair a rider became disabled. Frank, though an elderly man, piloted the horse to a respectable finish.

Frank died December 9, 1915. His funeral services were held at St Stephens Catholic Church in Owensboro, Kentucky and burial at St Alphonsus Cemetery in St Joseph, Kentucky.
