Of the Field Officers Col. Hatton was promoted to Brigadier General May 23, 1862 and killed at Seven Pines, Va May 31, 1862. Col. Goodner resigned April 8, 1863. Col. Howard was wounded at Gaines' Mill and died July 9, 1864.

The regiment started to Virginia July 15, 1861 reaching Staunton, Va. July 25, 1861.

Along with Maney's First and the 14th Tennessee regiments it was known throughout the war as the Tennessee Brigade, Army of Northern Virginia, under Brigadier General Samuel B. Anderson.

After being at Big Springs, Va several weeks the Brigade was sent to West Virginia, then back to Big Springs, where they were ordered to join Gen. John B. Floyd at Raleigh Court House. Here they were joined by Shumaker's Battery and sent to Bath, West Va. to destroy a RR there.

On Feb. 9, 1862 the 1st Tennessee was ordered back to Tennessee and the other 1st Tennessee Infantry replaced it (Turney's) and these three Tennessee Regiments were the only Tennessee regiments to spend their entire time in Virginia.

In May 1862 Colonel Hatton was promoted to Brigadier General and given command of the brigade. Lt. Col. Goodner was promoted to Colonel, Major John K. Howard to Lt. Colonel and Captain John A. Fite to Major. When General Hatton was killed, General Archer was put in command and continued until his death on October 24, 1864. The brigade was known as the famous "Archer's Brigade". The brigade was put in Major General A. P. Hill's Division. As such it was in the battles of Mechanicsville and Gaine's Mill on June 26-27 where it suffered 72 casualities and had every field officer either, killed or wounded. Here Colonel John K. Howard was killed. In August Hill's Division was ordered to Jackson's Corps. Then followed the battles of Cedar Run, Manassas Junction, Manassas Plains, and second Manassas. Here the 7th was commanded by Major S. G. Shepard. Then came Harper's Ferry, Sharpsburg, and Shepherdtown in September 1862. They were now down to 100 men commanded by Lieutenant George A. Howard, of this number losing 30 killed and wounded at Sharpsburg. After a short rest at Berryville, Virginia they were sent to join General James Longstreet at Fredricksburg. This was a ten days march. At Fredericksburg, the 7th lost 38 more men thus winding up a hard year. They remained at Fredericksburg in winter quarters until about the first of May 1863. Colonel Goodner had resigned in April 1863 and Major John A. Fite was made Colonel, Samuel G. Shephard was made Lt. Col. and W. H. Williamson, Major.

The 7th took an active part in the Battle of Chancellorsville and was in the charge that captured the Chancellor House.

After Chancellorsville, the Army of Northern Virginia was re-organized, with General A. P. Hill commanding the III Corps. Archer's Brigade was placed in Major General Heth's Division of Hill's Corp.Then Gettysburg with the brigade in Pickett's famous charge up Cemetery Hill. This charge was made by two brigades from Pickett's Division and four from Heth's Division. Archer's Brigade, the Tennessee Brigade, penetrated the Federal lines but were unable to hold their position. Here occurred one of the tragic "iffs" of the Civil War. They were not supported at all. The entire Confederate army stood and watched them being butchered. Here General Archer and Colonel Hite of the 7th were captured.

After the capture of General Archer the 7th was commanded for a time by Brigadier General H. H. Walker. Under him the 7th was in the Battle of the Wilderness on day 5-7, 1864 and Spotsylvania Courthouse on May 12th. Here General Walker was wounded and Brigadier General B. D. Fry took command and led them in the Battle of Cold Harbor. Then the seige of Petersburg beginning in June 1864 and lasting until April 1865. The 7th was in the trenches almost all this time. The Tennessee Brigade had idolized General Archer and were very unhappy and dissatisfied. General Archer was reported as back command August 13, 1864. No account of his exchange or escape being given. He died on October 24, 1864 and the command went to Colonel Robert M. Mayo, of the 14th Tennessee who was appointed brigadier general and commanded to the end.

On February 3, 1865 a deserter to the Federals reported that the 7th did not have over 60 men. When surrendered by General Lee on April 9, 1865 there were only 47 men left in this famous regiment. They were under Colonel Samuel G. Shephard.

A sketch of the 7th Tennessee Infantry would not be complete without calling attention to the fact that in Pickett's world famous charge up Cemetery Hill against the whole Union army behind breastworks and supported by the greatest artillery fire of the entire war, the three regiments that penetrated the Union lines were Col. Peter Turneys, 1st Tennessee Infantry, the old 7th Tennessee Infantry and the 14th Tennessee Infantry from Robertson, Montgomery and Stewart counties.

In closing this sketch let us be reminded that Tennessee is the only state in the U.S.A. that does not have a monument at Gettysburg.

Wells, Joseph - Discharged on disability at Warm Springs, Va. Dec. 1, 1861. Enlisted in Caruther's Artillery.

White, Henry - Hospital at Winchester, Va. Oct. 28, 1862 with Chronic Diarrhea. Deserted July 11, 1863 on retreat from Gettysburg. Captured at Hagerstown, Md. Sent to prison at Philadelphia, Pa.

Winham, Charles - Discharged on disability at Warm Springs, Va. Aug. 30, 1861. Re-enlisted. Wounded at Mine Run, Va. Nov. 27, 1863. Discharged on disability. From wound in shoulder. Enlisted in Co. C, 2nd Tennessee Cavalry, see also.

Wynne, William T. - Wounded in foot at Chancellorsville, Va. May 3, 1863. Given detached service at Camp Winder Hospital at Richmond, Va. Sept. 30, 1863 order Gen. Lee. Trans. to Co. D, 7th Cavalry Battalion, March 4, 1864

Young, James K. P. - Enlisted at Camp Trousdale, Tenn. May 24, 1861. Deserted at Camp Trousdale May 24, 1861. Later appears in Co. C, 7th Cavalry then in Co. C, 9th Cavalry.

In companies C and E of the 7th Tennessee Infantry it will be noted that many were killed, wounded or captured at Gettysburg, Pa. This was in Pickett's famous charge of 15,000 Confederates up Cemetery Hill against the Union Army of near seven times their number, exposed to Artillery and small arms fire from front and from both flanks while the rest of the Confederate army watched.

This with no protection whatever from the lay of the land or other natural sources. They were to have been supported on both flanks but the order for this was not given.

Tennessee troops in this charge were the 1st, 7th and 14th regiments. These Tennessee troops were the only ones to reach and enter the Union entrenchments but so few in number reached the Union lines that it was only a useless butchery. Possibly one of the greatest mistakes of the Southern Armies in the entire war.

Confederate captives from Gettysburg, Pennsylvania were sent to Ft. Delaware, Md. to prison. This was one of the most hated of all Northern Prisons and was supposed to have been escape proof. We will notice from these two companies that several Sumner Countians succeeded in escaping.

Now, in 1970, over 105 years after the Civil War, Tennessee is the only Southern State that does not have a monument on Gettysburg Battlefield. However, a movement is belatedly under way to rectify this disgrace.
