H.S. Wherry, of Willis & Wherry, farmers and stock dealers in Sumner County, was born there in 1847. He is one of eleven children of John J. and Jane (Smith) Wherry. The father, of Scotch-Welsh origin, was born near Gallatin, Tenn., about 1816. A farmer by occupation, he was appointed tobacco inspector at New Orleans by Andrew Jackson, holding the position about three years. He died in November, 1875. The mother, of Welsh descent, was born in Sumner County about 1816, and is living on her farm near Gallatin. With the advantages of St. Mary's College, and Forest Home Academy near Louisville, our subject began farming for himself at the age of twenty-one. Five years later he spent two years as salesman in a clothing store at Nashville, and then began his present career of farming. In December, 1876, he married Cecelia, daughter of Stephen C. and Mary (Bradford) Willis, and born in Sumner County in 1850. Their five children are John S., Harry S. and Robert E., in school, and Jennie M. and Georgie E. Mr. W. is a Democrat and a member of the F. & A.
