Bernice L. Bender, a substantial farmer of the Fourth District, was born in Sumner County, in 1857, being one of eight children, two sons and three daughters living: John S., of Wilson County; Sarah J., wife of J. C. Hubbard, of Smith County; Mollie E., wife of J. C. Frazier; Belle, wife of D. C. Douglas, and B. L. The parents were Bernice and Elizabeth (Smith) Bender. The father was born in North Carolina and came to Sumner County when a young man, locating in District No. 4 and established what is known as Bender's Ferry. He was married in Sumner County where he became a large land owner and leading farmer. He died in 1866. The mother was born in Davidson County in 1824, and is still living in Wilson County. Our subject having lost his father when only seven years old, was raised chiefly by his aunt, Mrs. Sarah Smith, and brother-in-law, J. C. Hubbard, receiving his education in the common schools of Wilson County. He commenced life as a farmer and stock dealer, which he still continues with successful results. For three years he has lived on his farm of 150 acres of valuable land, seven and one-half miles southwest of Gallatin, and also owns a farm of 134 acres in Wilson County. He is a man of good business capacity. He was elected constable in 1882, and held the office for two years, and was deputy sheriff for a short time. He is strictly conservative in politics, adhering more to principles than to party. His first presidential vote was for J. B. Weaver in 1880. He is a consistent member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South, and a man of undoubted integrity, liked and esteemed by all who know him.
