Columbia Murder Trial Begins Today
The trial of Lee GRANT of Columbia, held in connection with the
death of his wife at the family home on August 11, has been set for today in Columbia.
A number of attorneys have been retained by Grant, and it is expected the trial
will proceed from the day set.
Counsel for defense will attempt to prove that Mrs. GRANT came to
her death by swallowing a quantity of strychnine she had purchased at a drug store.
It is the contention of the state that she was beaten and strangled to death by the
defendant, Grant. Love letters said to have been written by Grant to another woman
in Columbia will probably be read during the progress of the trial, which is expected to
prove sensational.~~~~~~~~~~

GRANT Murder Trial Postponed
The trial of W. Lee GRANT, held in connection with the death of
his wife at their home in Columbia on August 11, was postponed on Friday of last week when
it came for trial in Columbia. No definite date was set for the later hearing,
although it is expected the trial will be heard during February of the new year.
A sensation is expected in the trial which has proven of
statewide interest, circumstantial evidence being claimed responsible for the arrest of
defendant. Mrs. GRANT was found dead on the floor of the kitchen in the GRANT home
on the above date, death having occurred several hours previous to the finding of the
body. A post-mortem examination is said to have shown the presence of a quantity of
strychnine in the stomach of the dead woman, a fact upon which it is expected the defense
will base a claim that the victim committed suicide with the poison. It is the
contention of the state that Mrs. GRANT was beaten and strangled by her husband. |
