Following is a summary of
the Confederate States Army records of W. B. UNDERWOOD, Co. A, 50
Tennessee Inf., Confederate States Army. Consolidated in Feb., '64,
with 1 (Colm's) Batt'n Tenn. Inf. and formed 50 (Consolidated) Tenn. Inf.
W. B. UNDERWOOD enlisted in the Confederate States Army on Aug. 28, 1861,
at Clarksville, Montgomery County, TN. He was recruited by Capt.
Beaumont.
He enlisted for a period of 12 months as a Private.
W. B. UNDERWOOD appears on a Company Muster Roll, not dated. It
shows him as a Private in Capt. T. W. Beaumont's Company and gives his age
at enlistment as 21 years.
W. B. UNDERWOOD appears on a Company Muster Roll for Sept. 16, 1861 too
Sept. 22, 1862. He is show as absent with the remarks "Escaped
Feb. 17, 1862 after surrender Donelson."
W. B. UNDERWOOD appears on a Company Muster Roll for Aug. 1, 1862 to Oct.
31, 1862. He is shown as absent with the remarks "Escaped after
surrender Donelson."
W. B. UNDERWOOD appears on a Company Muster Roll for Oct. 31, 1862 to Feb.
12, 1863. He is shown as present. It also states "Never
rec'd any pay."
W. B. UNDERWOOD appears on a Company Muster Roll for May & June
1863. It does not say he was present or absent but has the remarks
"Deserted Near Jackson May 14 while retreating from that
place." It also says "Never rec'd any pay."
W. B. UNDERWOOD appears on a Company Muster Roll taken at Tilton, Ga. on
Jan. 26, 1864. It shows him as a Private in Lieut. J. S. Martin's
Company, 50 Reg. Tenn. Infantry and gives his age at 22 years.
Remarks state "Deserted May 14 '63."
W. B. UNDERWOOD appears on a Register of Payments on Descriptive Lists for
Aug. 20, 1862 to Feb. 28, 1863. He was paid $70.40 on June 11, 1863
by B. F. Bomar. On this document it shows him as a Private, Co. A,
50 Regt. Tenn.
