FIRST ARREST PROVES IMPORTANT CAPTURE

The first official arrest recorded by Sheriff Will T. Webb, installed as sheriff on Thursday to succeed ex-Sheriff C. D. Spence, was that of Tom RAGAN, 24 year old, white man and a citizen of the Cavendar Branch community.  Defendant was arrested Saturday near midnight by Sheriff Webb and Deputy Sheriff J. C. Yates at the home of defendant's father-in-law, G. P. Blade, near the mouth of Cavendar Branch.  A warrant charging assault with intent to commit murder had been issued with G. W. ROBERTSON, neighbor of RAGAN, as plaintiff and who alleges that defendand waylaid the public highway and inflicted severe flesh wounds with a knife.  Slashes on the right arm and the right side of the body were said to have been made by RAGAN.
Following the encounter, RAGAN is said to have made a trip to Wayne County and to have arranged to move his family and household effects to a point in that county.  It is said that household goods were packed for removal and that the bedroom in which defendant was found asleep contained five adults in addition to RAGAN.  Entrance was gained with difficulty.
RAGAN was brought here by the arresting officers and placed in Hickman County jail to await the December term of circuit court.
