Civil War Diary of John H. WHARTON
The following record is a transcription of a
diary written by John H. WHARTON, a volunteer in Co. E. in Baxter SMITH's
Fourth Tenn. Reg., under Captain H. A. WILEY. This diary was owned
in 1939 by Mrs. Annie W. MACON, of Woodbury, Tennessee.
John H. WHARTON was a Confederate Soldier, fought
in the second battle of Fort Donelson, Missionary Ridge, Chicamauga and
Murfreesboro, and was in many skirmishes. He enlisted for one year,
but served 16 months. Was captured enroute home, with his pal, C. P.
BROWN, March 5, 1864. They were very courteously treated, being
furnished shoes, as they were practically barefoot. They had to take
the oath, ad were furnished transportation home. He, with several
others, afterwards prepared to go back to the army, but failed to get
through the lines.
John H. WHARTON was the son of Wm. and Annie
Weedon WHARTON, formerly of Culpepper, Va., and was living at Woodbury
during the Civil War, living there the remainder of his life. He
died at Woodbury Dec. 8, 1926, at the age of 91 years.
Originally transcribed by Mrs. Gladys Stacey PITTARD, Woodbury, Tennessee,
January 26, 1939.
