Nameless Baby Left at Franklin Home

A brown-eyed tot of two, just learning to lisp that age-old and most-beloved name of "Mother", a waif who shall be nameless here and yet who was given the name of the devoted young mother in combination with the reverenced name of the mother's mother, was the innocent cause of an exciting motor chase from Franklin to Nashville and from the latter city to this place on last Friday night between midnight and daybreak.  The story of an abandoned baby left on the steps of a home in Franklin, together with clothing wrapped in a newspaper on which was the address of S. M. SIMMONS of this county, caused Williamson County officers to investigate the case by first interviewing representatives of the above publication in Nashville, and coming here for a further investigation of the mystery.   Much publicity was given the event by the Nashville Tennessean, later developments explaining the mystery in detail:
A recent order issued by Judge John H. Clagett, judge of juvenile court for Hickman County, authorized the placing of the child in the Tennessee Orphans' Home in Columbia, the young mother being unable to keep and care for the baby.  Miss Sallie WALKER, well known in political and social welfare work here, was given charge of the child after tentative plans for its adoption by Mrs. Earl JOHNSON of Franklin, and who is said to have seen and loved the child after its acceptance by the management of the above institution on Thursday morning.  It is reported that Mrs. JOHNSON arranged for the baby to be delivered to her home in Franklin and left on the porch of the home at 9:30 on Friday night, the affair being kept a secret from Mr. JOHNSON.  The latter, however, discovered the act of placing the baby on the steps of the home and promptly reported the matter to Constables T. P. Lunn, C. W. Reed and S. P. Locke, who made the investigation above mentioned.
Many families are said to want the winsome child in Franklin.
