Following is a transcription of the above person's (TN) obituary from the Fentress
County Gazette, Jamestown, Fentress Co., TN, dated 06/18/1896:
Death of Dr. H. STEVENS.
Livingston
Enterprise
Last Monday about 12 o'clock Dr. Henry STEVENS, of Nettle
Carrier, died very suddenly. He had been splitting stove wood, writing letters and
doing other light work about the place and seemed in good health in the forenoon. He
lay down to rest shortly before noon, apparently as well as ever, but when Mrs. STEVENS
went to call him to dinner she found him dead. He must have died without a struggle.
On Tuesday evening about 3 o'clock the Masonic Fraternity, of which he was a worthy
member, met at his house and solemnized the last sad rites over the remains of the
deceased brother. They then repaired to the grave, where he was interred with the
usual Masonic ceremonies, participated in by forty or fifty Master Masons. An
immense concourse of people had assembled at the grave to pay the last tribute of respect
to their departed dead whom they all loved in life and whose memory they all cherish and
revere. That he was near to the hearts of the people is attested by the large crowd
assembled from all parts of the county. He was a strong man, both morally and
intellectually, and his place in the world will be hard to fill. We could not name a
man who would be missed more than he. Truly a great and good man has quit the walks
of men. Peace to his ashes!
