Sept. 11, 1924 HICKMAN COUNTIAN HELD FOR MURDER Granville SLAUGHTER Charged with Murder near Paris, Bound Over to Court Under Heavy Bond Granville SLAUGHTER of Hassell's Creek, north of Littlelot, was released from custody of officials at Paris, Tenn., on Friday of last week under bond of $10,000 after waiving examination and being bound over to the next circuit court term of that county on a charge of first degree murder in connection with the death of Miss Annie Mae CARTER, 15 year old step-daughter of W. D. CAPPS, former Hickman Countian and maternal uncle of defendant. The tragic death of the young girl stirred the entire section of state in which the gruesome scene was enacted. Death followed the discharge of a 16-gauge shotgun, said to have been fired at a distance of several feet, the load entering the upper part of the body. Defendant maintains that the girl commited suicide although the girl's mother, Mrs. Jennie Carter CAPPS, reported as prosecutor in the case, alleges defendant guilty of the crime prompted by jealously. Members of Slaughter's family, respected citizens of this county, have returned from Paris where hey went immediately after the tragedy, and where they are said to have arranged the heavy bond of defendant. An interesting sidelight into the history of the CAPPS family, at whose home the alleged crime was commited, shows that Mr. and Mrs. CAPPS were married early in life and later separated. Mrs. CAPPS was formerly Miss Jennie STEPHENSON and following the divorce granted, she was married to the late Mr. CARTER, father of the dead girl. In the meantime, Mr. CAPPS remarried. The death of CARTER and the latter Mrs. CAPPS occurred several years ago in this county, and in the course of time Mrs. CARTER and CAPPS were remarried. They have lived at Whitlock, 7 miles from Paris, the past several years and are respected citizens. The defendant SLAUGHTER had been employed near Paris the past four months and was said to have been in love with the CARTER girl, who was reported engaged to be married to another. Upon this premise is based the alleged jealousy which prompted the tragedy. |
