Hickman County News Centreville, Hickman Co., Tenn. Thurs. Sept. 25, 1924 ESCAPED PRISONERS MEEKLY SURRENDER Negro Convicts Who Attacked and Escaped Veteran Guard Return Voluntarily to County Jail A rather tame finale to the sensational man-hunt of last week, following the escape of Cy CRYSMAN and Willis CURLEE, Negro members of the county chain gang of prisoners in charge of Charles N. Higdon, came with the surrender of CURLEE at nine o'clock at night preceding the return of CRYSMAN early Thursday morning. The search of Sheriff W. T. Webb and deputies, a posse of citizens and the noted bloodhound of Ed Pugh of Nashville, in charge of Mr. Pugh, had failed to find any clue of the missing men. Various theories had been advanced as to the method of successful escape, all theories being dispelled by the statement of both men that they had not been away from the immediate neighborhood in which they attacked the guard and effected an escape, an account of which was given in last week's News. Both men were returned to the county prison and work on county roads as members of the crew from which they escaped. No additional penalty has been imposed for the offense, such action being a part of routine work of the December term of circuit court here. |
