Public Library

The Maury County Public Library has genealogical holdings of over 4,000 volumes, the largest portion on the county of Maury. Also housed at the library is a collection of books by the late Jill Knight Garrett, noted Middle Tennessee genealogist, researcher, and author. The library also holds a collection of Ms. Knight's loose papers, which include manuscripts, news clippings, family notes, commemorative issues of the local newspaper, etc. These loose papers are indexed by subject. Some microfilm is available, including Civil War Rosters and census.

A $300,000 renovation was completed at Maury County Library in January, 1996. This included 5,000 square feet of basement, which was converted for a children's area. The library's genealogical collection was placed in the mezzanine, which can be reached by elevator. A microfilm reader/printer and xerox machine are available.

The Daily Herald, Columbia's newspaper, has a circulating collection of microfilmed issues, which may be brought to the library for reading and copying. Some issues of The Herald date back as far as 1815. (The Tennessee State Library and Archives has a large collection of issues on microfilm).

There is limited parking for the library along West 8th Street and a side street, but there is also a parking lot in the rear of the building. Hours are: 9:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m, Monday - Wednesday; and 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.(Central Times), Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
