Descendants of Thomas Maxwell

Generation No. 1

1. THOMAS1 MAXWELL was born June 03, 1783 in TN or GA, and died August 17, 1831 in Marion Co., Tennessee. He married MARY CAMPBELL Abt. 1800 in TN. She was born June 03, 1783 in TN or GA, and died January 09, 1845 in Marion Co., Tennessee.

Notes for THOMAS MAXWELL:
Thomas MAXWELL and wife Mary were charter members of the Primitive Baptist Church in Sweeten's Cove, Marion Co. TN in 1821. With them were children Millea and Calvin, but no mention is made of their other children. Some would have been too young to join at that date, others probably lived elsewhere in the county. Supposedly, Thomas and Mary married in Greene Co. TN, but no record has been found of this marriage there. There were MAXWELLs in other northeast TN counties, such as Claiborne and Grainger though.

1820 Franklin Co., TN, p. 42, line 1051:
Thomas Maxwell, 2 males 10-16, 1 male 16-18, 2 males 16-26, 1 male over 45; 2 females under 10, 1 female 10-16, 2 females 16-26, 1 female 26-45 [2 females 16-26 are unidentified; the others all match up with the family members we know]

1830 Marion Co., TN, p. 58:
Thomas Maxwell, 1 male 20-30, 1 male 50-60; 1 female 45-50

Notes for EBENEZER MAXWELL:
Ebenezer must have been a very popular man. When he died, monuments were placed in three locations (with the same information): Marion Co. TN, Benton Co. AR, and Cass Co. TX. Supposedly, he is buried in Benton Co. AR, but died in Cass Co. TX. This is unverified.

The 1840 census of Marion Co., TN lists:
Ebeneaza Maxwell 231001-110001

Notes for MARTHA JANE GRIFFIN:
Look for more information about GRIFFIN family - they intermarried with the BURKHALTERs (Rev. Michael's), and may have had tie-ins with the MAXWELLs prior to Marion Co. TN. GRIFFINs came from the same place in SC where MCBEEs were found (Rev. Samuel) - Pendleton District.

She was born Abt. 1805, and died Abt. 1822. He married (2) SUSANNAH RAINEY July 18, 1824 in Marion Co. TN. She was born February 12, 1808, and died January 27, 1877.

Notes for CALVIN ELIJAH MAXWELL:
Obituary from The Osceola Sun (MO), dated January 30, 1879:
The Rev. Mr. Calvin Maxwell died on the 27th inst. at the residence of his son-in-law, Amon Hutton. Mr. Maxwell had been a citizen of this county for many years, the most of which he has lived on the banks of the Weaubleau. A few years since he sold his farm and moved to Benton County (Note: Arkansas). He did not stay there long, but moved back to this county where he was soon stricken down and died from dropsy. He leaves a large number of friends, who deeply mourn this separation from them by the hand of death.

Child of CALVIN MAXWELL and EMALINE HAWKINS is:
       i. NANCY ELIZABETH3 MAXWELL, b. Abt. 1822.

Children of CALVIN MAXWELL and SUSANNAH RAINEY are:
       ii. MARTHA RAINEY3 MAXWELL, b. November 23, 1825; d. January 1903.
iii. ELIJAH CALVIN MAXWELL, b. February 08, 1826.
iv. MARY ADELINE MAXWELL, b. January 29, 1827.
       v. MELILAH JANE MAXWELL, b. November 11, 1831.
       vi. WILLIAM H. MAXWELL, b. 1834.
       vii. EBENEZER C. MAXWELL, b. 1835.
       viii. JOSEPH MAXWELL, b. 1837.

       xi. JOHN W. MAXWELL, b. 1849.
       xii. MARINDA M. MAXWELL, b. 1851.

5. MILLEA2 MAXWELL (THOMAS1) was born February 11, 1807 in GA or TN, and died May 29, 1896 in Cass Co., Texas. She married (1) JOSIAH FRANCIS Abt. 1829 in Marion Co., Tennessee, son of JOSEPH FRANCIS and SUSANNAH WHORLICK. He was born Abt. 1800 in Tennessee, and died July 31, 1836 in Marion Co., Tennessee. She married (2) SAMUEL MCBEE July 1839 in Marion Co., Tennessee, son of UNKNOWN MCBEE. He was born July 07, 1785 in Spartanburg District/Pendleton District, SC, and died August 11, 1862 in Dade Co., Georgia.

Notes for MILLEA MAXWELL:
Millea and her parents and brother are shown on the first roll taken of the members of the Sweeten's Cove Primitive Baptist Church in 1822.

Notes for SAMUEL MCBEE:
Samuel McBee was a charter member of the Primitive Baptist Church at Sweeten's Cove, Marion Co. TN (originally named Union Church) when it formed in 1821. He and wife, Ellender, joined the church, as well as several other MCBEEs who were probably brothers and children of Samuel. Samuel is shown on several deeds in Marion Co. during the 1820s and 1830s, but is not found on the 1830 and 1840 census for that county. He moved to Dade Co. GA approximately 1842 after answering a call to minister to New Providence Primitive Baptist Church there. Ellender STANDRIDGE MCBEE died in 1839 and Samuel married in July 1839 to Mrs. Millea FRANCIS (nee MAXWELL). Millea had several children by her first husband and 5 more by Samuel. When Samuel died in 1862, Millea probably lived with one of her children in Dade Co. or in Dekalb Co. AL before moving to Cass Co. TX (or Cherokee Co.) about 1876. She has not been found on the 1870 census for any state, nor the 1880 census, although it is known where she lived in 1880 (stated in the pension file).

[I believe Martha (listed as a MCBEE) is Samuel's sister, and that she married Henry GOTCHER.]

From the History of Jackson Co., AL, by John Robert Kennamer:

The history of the earliest Baptists in the county was marked by a fierce struggle between the anti-mission and the mission Baptist. The Flint River Association was organized at BRADSHAW's Meeting House, Lincoln County, TN in 1814, and churches from the territory in Alabama were represented.

By 1821 the Mud Creek Association was formed at the Mud Creek Meeting House. This Association included all Baptist churches in Jackson and some in Sequatchie Valley, TN. The nine churches were located in Mountgilled, Mud Creek, Providence (Maynard's Cove), New Hope, Hopewell, Blue Spring, Friendship, Paint Rock (in the valley), and Union, in Sequatchie Valley.

Isaac REED was elected first moderator, Josiah CONN, Clerk. Delegates were ... Levi ISBELL, Elisha BLEVINS, ... John BELVINS, ... Daniel and John MORRIS, ..., John REED, Samuel MCBEE, Henry GOTCHER, ..., David KENNAMER, ....

Preachers of this church who were well and favorably known in their day are: John WILLIAMS, John REED, Isaac REED, Samuel McBEE, ... Elijah BERRY, ... and John BRANNUM.

Lookout Valley Primitive Baptist Church, 1800-1975, Hamilton Co., TN:
Elders visiting the little church in the past are...Samuel McBee....

1830 Jackson Co., AL, p. 101:
William McBee, 1 male under 5, 1 male 15 to 20, 1 male 60 to 70; 1 female 15 to 20, 1 female 40 to 50
Samuel McBee, 1 male under 5, 1 male 20 to 30; 1 female under 5, 1 female 20 to 30
Could this William (born between 1760 and 1770) be the father of Samuel McBee born 1785 or a brother? Samuel gives a deposition for William's widow to obtain a War of 1812 pension, and I've assumed this William was Samuel's brother. Both William and Samuel fought in that war in the same company. In the 1812 tax roll for Franklin Co. TN, there is a William Jr. and William Sr. listed, as well as Samuel, John, and James McBee. If this William is in fact father of Samuel (1785),then Rebecca Branham is his second wife, and not Samuel's mother. She (Rebecca) was, according to the pension file, born about 1790.

1849-50 Samuel McBee served as Senator for the 46th District [Dade and Walker Co., GA]. He also served as a Justice of the Inferior Court for Dade County, January 15, 1845 to January 15, 1849, and January 15, 1849 to January 8, 1853

Children of MILLEA MAXWELL and JOSIAH FRANCIS are:

Notes for ASA JONES MCBEE:
There is an Asa JONES found in the 1860 census of Dade Co. GA, Rising Fawn P.O., house no. 116. He is 45 years old, thus born 1815. It is unknown whether he was family to Samuel MCBEE or not, but it is interesting that Samuel named a son Asa Jones MCBEE.

21.  xi. WILLIAM HALE MCBEE, b. June 24, 1846, Dade Co., Georgia; d. October 18, 1872, Dade Co., Georgia.

Notes for MARY MALLIAH MAXWELL:
Mary Maxwell also is known as Millilah. I've listed her as Mary here, instead of Millilah because the name is confused with my ancestor, Millea/Millia Maxwell. Other sources list Millilah's birth date as 6/12/1810, instead of December as I have listed. Both sources are Bible records.

Notes for DAVID KETNER:
Information about the children born before 1840 comes from Diane Carter, [email protected]. Burial information comes from the Marion Co. TN website.

Children of MARY MAXWELL and DAVID KETNER are:

Generation No. 3

8. EMILY3 MAXWELL (JOHN2, THOMAS1) was born July 09, 1820 in Tennessee, and died May 01, 1878 in Grapevine, Tarrant, TX. She married JONATHAN BLEVINS August 27, 1837 in Marion Co., TN, son of RICHARD BLEVINS and RHODA SCOTT. He was born July 17, 1817 in TN, and died October 22 in Year unreadable, abt 1910.

Notes for JONATHAN BLEVINS:
Jonathan and Emily were married August 27, 1837 by Elder Samuel MCBEE in Marion Co., TN. They were Primitive Baptist. His occupation was farmer and sheriff. Jonathan lived in Deer Head Cove in Dekalb Co., AL (opens up into Dade Co. GA); in mid-1850s he moved his family to Johnson Crook near Rising Fawn (Dade Co.). Three sons - Richard, William & Lewis - fought in the CSA. Jonathan's brother, Gains, was killed by Yankee soldiers near the end of the war when they surprised him in Jonathan's house. Jonathan was sheriff of Dade County 1857-1873. Fall of 1873 he resigned as sheriff to join a wagon train to Texas, and settled in the Grapevine area.

Information from Theresa Edwards ([email protected]), a MAXWELL family researcher:
"They are James Martin Harvey Anglin and his second wife Idy! He is my grgr grandpa and Idy is our grgr stepgranny. I have photos of them if you'd like. My cousin Reta Kay remembers Idy. He treated her very kindly and carved out a mattress because she had a dowagers hump. Reta Kay said she was the sweetest person you'd meet. The family story is that Idy's father was very cruel to her. JMH hired her as a nanny when his first wife died. He walked her home one evening after church services (he was a Primitive Baptist minister) and asked her to marry him. She went inside got her bonnet and never went back home. Pearlie Mae "Pearl" is the daughter of his first wife. Minnie Carless is also from the first marriage and named after her mother, Irene Carless Maxwell. John is also from the first marriage and I believe he stayed with them most of his life."

He married (2) ELIZABETH MATILDA SPENCER September 17, 1896 in Yell Co, Arkansas.

Notes for SILAS BENTON MCBEE:
Silas B. MCBEE served in Co., D, 39th Georgia Volunteer Infantry, Army of Tennessee, CSA (Dade County Invincibles). He enlisted at Trenton, Dade Co., GA on 4 March 1862. He enlisted for 3 years and was enlisted by J.M. CURETON. His muster card for February 28 to October 31, 1863, states that he deserted on 20 November 1863 (about the time he probably heard his father died). On 26 Dec 1863, he appears on a Register of Prisoners of War, Department of the Cumberland. Received at Military Prison, Louisville, KY. He was captured at Trenton, Georgia on 26 December 1863. There is a comment card that says he was "discharged - Rock Island" on 17 January 1864. On 31 Dec 1863, appears on a roll of Prisoners of War at Nashville, TN, captured by the forces under Major General George H. THOMAS, Commanding Department of the Cumberland, and forwarded to Captain S.E. JONES, Provost Marshall General at Louisville, KY, 31 Dec 1863. Roll dated Headquarters Department Cumberland, Office of Provost Marshall General, Nashville, 31 Dec 1863. He appears on a roll of Prisoners of War who arrived at Louisville, KY prison during six days ending 31 Dec 1863; Roll dated Office of Provost Marshall General, Louisville, KY, 1 January 1864. Discharged on 17 January 1864 and sent to Rock Island. On 17 Jan 1864, appears on a roll of Prisoners of War forwarded from Louisville, KY to Rock Island, IL. On 20 January 1864, appears on a roll of Prisoners of war at Rock Island Barracks, IL, received from Louisville, KY. Roll dated Headquarters, Rock Island Barracks, Illinois. Remarks: Enlisted 20 January 1864 [not sure what this means!]. 18 May 1865, he appears on a roll of Prisoners of War at Rock Island Barracks, Illinois, released 18 May 1865, under oath of 9 May 1865.

Headquarters, Rock Island Barracks, Illinois
I, Silas B. McBee, priv. B, 39 Ga Infry of the County of Dade, State of Georgia, do solemnly swear, in presence of Almighty God, that I will henceforth faithfully support, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States, and the Union of the States thereunder; and that I will in like manner, abide by and faithfully support all acts of Congress passed during the existing rebellion with reference to slaves, so long and so far as not repealed, modified, or held voice by Congress, or by decision of the Supreme Court; and that I will, in like manner, abide by and faithfully support all proclamations of the President, made during the existing rebellion, having reference to slaves, so long and so far as not modified or declared void by decision of the Supreme Court: SO HELP ME GOD. [signed] Silas B. McBee Subscribed and sworn to before me, at Rock Island Barracks, Illinois, this 18th day of May, A.D., 1865. [signature looks like A. Briggs, but not certain - 1st Lt. and Post Adjutant). The above named has Light complexion, Lt. Auburn hair, and Grey eyes; is 5 feet 6 1/2 inches high, and 23 years of age.

Silas B. MCBEE served in Co. B, 6th Georgia Volunteer Infantry, Army of Tennessee, CSA (The Lookout Dragoons). This is the service for which he drew a pension. I think he probably didn't think he could get a pension for the service in Co. D, 39th because he deserted (for whatever reason). It is interesting that in his pension application, he states that he enlisted as a soldier in the State of Georgia during the War between the States in Company B of the 6th Regiment of Georgia Infantry Volunteers. That while in the discharge of his duty as a soldier of said company and regiment in the service of the State of Arkansas or of the Confederate States of America, he [suffered] a hernia, overheating, and lung trouble (he was discharged from Co. B for "incipient consumption"]. He also states in his application, "I am incapacitated to perform manual labor in any of the ordinary avocations of life and that such incapacity is the result of wounds received in the service, being Strangulated hernia from the weight of cartridge box, and lung trouble from exposure in service, also bladder trouble which I verily believe to be caused by same service." He was awarded a pension March 11, 1901, for the sum of $50.

This is to certify that S.B. MCBEE volunteered in the Confederate Army early in 1861 in the 6th Georgia Regiment under A.H. COLQUIT as Col. and John HANNA as Capt. of Col. B of that Regt. And was very much injured by hernia, also an overheat and lung trouble caused by exposure to the causes of such troubles while at Yorktown Va. Witness our hands, this the 4th day of May A.D., 1892. [signed] Millie (her mark) McBee (Silas' mother) Malliah (her mark) Cooper (Silas' half-sister who married Harmon Cooper). Witnesses: J.E. Fitts, Alvia Cooper.

24 September 1867, Silas B., Asa J. and William H. MCBEE sold property to Benjamin F. PACE and Shadrick STEPHENS for $300. The land that they sold was part of Lot #159, 19th District, 4th Section, Dade Co., GA. Asa J. MCBEE signed the deed as the Attorney for Silas B. MCBEE. See page #212, Deed Book F., Dade Co., GA.

Silas and family moved to Arkansas about 1884. In 1892 he applied for a Civil War pension while living in Yell Co., AR. When his pension application was approved in July 1901, he was living in Balloon (now Plainview), Yell Co., AR.

Yell Co., AR Deed Book 34, page 279: S.B. McBee to J.W. Booher...$200...SE4 NW4 S10 T4N R22W in Yell Co., AR...40 acres...24 Dec 1904. No witnesses listed. Filed for record, 19 February 1912. This is the property which Elizabeth MCBEE deeded to her husband in 1894, and with the date of deed signing, gives an approximate date Silas and Elizabeth left Yell Co. for Pontotoc Co., OK.

Silas Benton is buried at SCULLIN CEMETERY located about 8 miles northeast of Sulphur in Murray County, OK.
