Obituary of J. M. Massengale


Dated 2/26/1909

J. M. Massengale died Tuesday at the home of his son in Sheffield, AL, after suffering but a few days with bowel trouble. He left here a few weeks past to visit his son, who holds a position with the government on a boat stationed near Sheffield. Mr. Massengale was about 70 years of age. He was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church and was a church worker. He had been a resident of the South Side for years and was well known and liked. He was a pioneer Riverman and piloted some of the first steam freight boats ever to ply the Tennessee River. He remains were brought Thursday to Carpenter, AL, and interred at New Hope. Elder R. O. Raulston conducted the funeral service. A large number of friends and relatives attended.
