Who Said Mountain Counties Had No Slaves? Slave Census Schedule for Hancock County, Tennessee 1860 National Archives and Records Administration, Record Group M653, Roll #282

Many people believe that East Tennessee, because it was mountainous and had a large Union sympathizing population, had few slaves. By comparison with many counties in the deep south where a plantation economy was more common, that is true. But there were slaves, even in an area like Hancock County that was comprised mostly of small farmers. There were two census schedules made of slaves at the same time as the regular census was takenin 1850 and 1860. Because the 1860 shows the situation closest to the Civil War, I have chosen to extract that information for those who might not have access to the microfilm. The slave schedules do not show the names of the slavejust the owner's name. It does however show the age, sex and color of the slave. There was a total of only 66 slaveowners and 243 slaves. John Simpson and Mrs. Tucker (relationship unknown) were the largest with 29 slaves together.

Only a few of the owners were large slaveholders. Some districts had very few slaves. This probably explains the low amount of Confederate volunteers in the county during the war. The slave census was taken by Joseph Campbell. There was also a column in the schedules for freed (manumitted) slaves, but none were listed in Hancock Co. so I did not include that column. You will note that often there is not a separate house for slaves, so one would assume that they lived in the same house with the rest of the family and were most likely household workers rather than field hands. For the sake of accuracy, I have retained the spelling as it was written by the census taker. Districts in this schedule do not always correspond to those districts in the Free Schedules. The page numbers are the way they are labeled on the film. B=Black, M=Mulatto.
