OBITUARIES


Hallie Emison, Jr.--Services for Hallie Emison, Jr., who was killed in action on Attu Island in the Aleutians May 29, 1943, were held Wednesday at 3 o'clock at the Baptist Church in Alamo, the Rev. J. E. Sharp officiating. Mr. Emison was 25 at the time of his death. He was reared near Alamo and had many friends. Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hallie Emison, Sr., wife, Mrs. Annie Emison of Humboldt, 2 brothers, Doyle and George Emison of Alamo. Burial was in Alamo Cemetery. Ronk Funeral Home in charge.

Mrs. Emma Smothers Woods--Funeral services this Thursday a.m. at the Goosmann Funeral Home in Bells for Mrs. Emma Smothers Woods, who died Tuesday night at a Nursing Home in Memphis, where she had been for several weeks. Rev. J. P. Irion officiating. Burial was in Belleview Cemetery. She leaves her daughter, Mrs. Maie Woods Kerr of Olive Branch, Miss., with whom she had made her home for several years; two grandsons, Billy Woods Kerr and Robert Kerr; two stepdaughters, Mrs. John H. Harris and Mrs. C. J. Montgomery of Bells.

Alma Elizabeth Walker--Funeral services were held at the Alamo Baptist Church Monday at 1 p.m. for Alma Elizabeth Walker, who died at the Methodist Hospital in Memphis Sunday a.m. Rev. J. P. Irion officiated. She was born in Arlington, Ky. Her father, Rev. B. A. Walker, is pastor of the Alamo Circuit Methodist Church. They have made many friends here, who sympathize with the family in their bereavement. She was 15 years of age and a member of the Methodist Church. Burial was in Bethel Cemetery, Fulton, Ky., under the direction of Ronk Funeral Home. She leaves her parents and one brother, Joseph Walker of Alamo.

Death of Mr. P. J. Fortune--Death came suddenly to Mr. P. J. Fortune of Monette, Ark., early Wednesday morning, Sept. 29. Mr. Fortune had not been in good health for sometime, but his death came as a shock to his family. He was 70 years of age. His funeral was held Thursday at First Baptist Church in Monette with burial in Monette Cemetery. Leachville Funeral Home was in charge. He leaves his wife and eight children. They are as follows: Mr. Will Eason Fortune, Bells; Mrs. Nina St. Pierre, Mr. Sherman Fortune, Miss Beatrice Fortune of California; Mrs. Jimmy Patterson, Kansas; Mrs. Virginia Hunt, Pennsylvania; Mr. J. C. Fortune, Mrs. Lou Ella McKinnon, Memphis and several grandchildren.

BIRTHS


Alamo--Born Monday to Mr. and Mrs. Buck Casey at Haywood County Hospital in Brownsville, an eight-pound boy.

Bells Items--Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Betts of Dallas, Texas are announcing the arrival of a daughter on Oct. 2. Mr. Betts was with the Butane Gas Co. here for several months and he and Mrs. Betts lived with Mrs. J. B. Edwards.

Coxville--Mr. and Mrs. Duane Armes of Midway are announcing the birth of a son on Sept. 26. The baby is the grandchild of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Cook of Coxville.

WEDDINGS


Moore-Roberts and Moore-Butler--Miss Louise Moore and Carl Simeon Roberts and Miss Irene Moore and Houston Butler were married in Corinth, Miss., on Sunday, Sept. 26th. After honeymooning for a few days in Decatur, Ala., they returned and are residing with their parents. The Misses Moore are residents of the Cairo Community.

Compton-Conley wedding--At 8 o'clock Saturday evening at the First Christian Church in Alamo, Miss Virginia Compton, daughter of Mrs. Iona Compton of Bells became the bride of Mr. Paul B. Conley, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Booker Conley. The wedding ceremony was performed by Rev. J. P. Irion, pastor of the Alamo and Bells Methodist churches. A program of nuptial music was presented before and during the ceremony by Mrs. Claude Conley. Mr. John Ed Edwards was the soloist. Mr. Francis Wolfe played a cello solo. The bride was given in marriage by her brother, Mr. Billy Compton of Memphis. The maid of honor was Miss Ann Compton, sister of the bride. The bridesmaids were Misses Lura Mae Conley and June Peters of Memphis. Little Miss Eleanor Virginia Conley, sister of the groom, was flower girl. Mr. Bobby Conley served his brother as best man. Groomsmen were Messrs Richard Jerman and Latney Culp of Alamo. Miss Gladys Compton, aunt of the bride and Mrs. Paul Conley gave a reception following the ceremony at the home of Mrs. Conley. Close friends and relatives attended. The wedding cake was served by Miss Gladys Compton. The bride is a graduate of Alamo High School and employed at the Bank of Alamo. The groom is a graduate of Alamo High School and the University of Tenn., Knoxville. He is teaching a Veteran's Class at Maury City. After a short wedding trip, they will make their home in Alamo. Poston-McLean wedding--Miss Martha Dawn Poston, daughter of Mrs. C. L. Poston and the late Mr. Poston of Maury City became the bride of Joseph Woodfen McLean, son of Mrs. J. C. McLean and the late Mr. McLean of Alamo, late Saturday afternoon at the home of her mother in Maury City. The Rev. R. E. Black officiated. Mrs. Hal Redmond was pianist and Mrs. J. W. Riddick sang. The bride was given in marriage by her mother. Mrs. Edwin Black, her sister, was matron of honor. Ridley H. Mitchell was best man. Edwin Black and Hal Redmond lit the candles. Following the ceremony a reception was held. Later the couple left for a wedding trip to the Smoky Mountains. They will live in Alamo, where the bridegroom is employed. OBITUARIES


Miss Sarah Alice Lewis--Services were held at Center Methodist Church Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. for Miss Sarah Alice (Aunt Babe) Lewis, who died at the home of her niece, Mrs. Clarence Cates, southeast of Humboldt. Burial was in Center Cemetery with Hunt Funeral Home in charge. Miss Lewis, aged 88, was born and reared in Crockett County, the daughter of the late James and Edna Reams Lewis, pioneer family of West Tennessee. She leaves no close relatives.

James Carl Cox--Funeral services were held Tuesday for James Carl Cox, who died suddenly at his home in the Cox Chapel community early Monday morning, as a result of a heart attack. He was 72. The funeral was held at the Cox Chapel Church of Christ, the Rev. John B. Porter of Humboldt, officiating. Burial was in Cox Chapel Cemetery with Hunt Funeral Home in charge. Mr. Cox was born and reared in Crockett County, the son of the late Moses F. and Mattie McLeary Cox, pioneer family of West Tennessee. He had engaged in farming all his life. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Nannie Bell Cox of Humboldt, two daughters, Mrs. Thelma Hopper of Humboldt, Miss Blanche Cox of Memphis, three sons, Reggie D. Cox of Fulton, Ky., Mose F. Cox and Robert C. Cox, both of Humboldt, three sisters, Mrs. E. S. Cox, and Mrs. J. T. James, both of Humboldt and Mrs. Ella Cozart of Cincinnati, Ohio, a half sister, Mrs. Linda James of Knoxville and a half brother, James R. Cox of Ridgely, Tenn.

Catherine Garrison--Funeral services were held on Wednesday morning at 10:30 at the Elizabeth Methodist Church for Catherine Garrison, who died at her home at Elizabeth, Monday evening. Bro. C. O. Frey officiating. She was 16. She leaves her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Garrison; three brothers, Clayton, Keylon and Lavon; two sisters, Mrs. Hazel Latham and Miss Elizabeth Garrison all of Elizabeth. Sudbury Funeral Home in charge.

Mrs. Melissa Mitchell--Mrs. Melissa Mitchell, 73, of the Eason Store community, died at her home Friday following a stroke. Mrs. Mitchell was the widow of the late Napoleon Mitchell who died in 1945. She was a member of the Church of Christ. One sister, Mrs. Brue Hampton of Halls, survives. She was a native of Missouri. Funeral services were held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Clark's School building and burial was in Robertson Cemetery. Services were by E. L. Ward of Brownsville. Ronk Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Alamo--Mrs. S. E. Johnson was called to Paragould, Ark., Friday by the death of her brother-in-law, Mr. Luther Long, husband of Mrs. Alma Johnson Long.

Alamo--Rev. and Mrs. B. A. Walker attended the funeral of his nephew, Arnold Walker, in Fulgham, Ky. Wednesday.

Friendship--Mr. C. L. Jones, Mr. Noble Jones and Mrs. Allen Griffin are in Nashville because of the serious illness and death of Mrs. Marie Jones Martin. Funeral services are at Nashville today, Thursday.

BIRTHS


Alamo--Born to Mr. and Mrs. Teddy Faircloth, Saturday, October 9, a son, who has been named Tony Ray. Alamo--Mr. and Mrs. Billy Hopper, Jr., are announcing the birth of a daughter, Oct. 10 at Webb-Williamson Hospital in Jackson. She has been given the name Pamela Lee.

Bells Items--Mr. and Mrs. Billy Hopper, Jr., of Alamo, are announcing the arrival of a daughter on Oct 10. Mrs. Hopper is the former Polly Worrell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Worrell.

The Editor's Say-So--I thought that becoming a father was quite an ordeal, and that was when I didn't have such a ramshackled constitution as I do now, but this grandfather business came very near wearin' me to a frazzle. Bob and Rebecca Sims Green have a nine pound, six ounce boy, Robert Lee Green, Jr., born Wednesday afternoon at the Haywood County Hospital in Brownsville. I am, therefore the first Grandpappy Sims in my immediate family. Bob, Jr., is going to be a newspaperman alright as evidenced by the fact that he is already lying awake nights worrying about the paper coming out on time.

Friendship--Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Griffin announce the arrival of a son, Daniel Owens, born at Brownsville Hospital, Wednesday, Oct. 13.

Gadsden--Mrs. G. B. Lynn, Mrs. Irene Stroud, Mrs. Martin Tawater, Mrs. Billy Hopper and daughter, Judy, visited Mrs. Billie Hopper, Jr. and baby daughter, Pamela Lee, at Webb-Williamson Hospital Sunday.

Gadsden--Mr. and Mrs. Odell Williams are the parents of a daughter born Monday, Oct. 11th.

WEDDINGS


Chambers-Golden--Mr. and Mrs. Johnnie Chambers of Tigrett announce the marriage of their daughter, Minnie Lou Chambers to William Nelson Golden, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Golden of Elizabeth, at Hernando, Miss., October 8 at 8:30 at the Baptist Parsonage, Bro. Whitten officiating. They were accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Milton Golden, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Golden and Junior Williams of Memphis. Mr. and Mrs. Golden are graduates of Friendship High School and will make their home at 561 Watkins in Memphis where they are both employed.

Alamo--Mr. Lonnie Eldon Laman and Miss Helen Arnold were married Sept. 4 in Corinth, Miss.

Earnheart-Bowden--Miss Clarice Mae Earnheart, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Earnheart of Maury City became the bride of Grady Bowden, son of Mr. and Mrs. L. E. Hodges of Memphis at 8 o'clock Sept. 29th at Senatobia, Miss. The double ring ceremony was performed by Rev. Pate. Mrs. Robert Butler was matron of honor and Mr. Ralph Pace, brother-in-law of the groom, was best man. Following the ceremony, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Pace entertained with a reception in their home on Alta Vista. After a wedding trip to the Smoky Mountains, they will be at home in Memphis where both are employed.

OBITUARIES


Lee J. Blackmon--Funeral services were held yesterday, Wednesday, at the Friendship Methodist Church at 2:30 p.m. for L. J. Blackmon, who died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Credie Smith near Atwood early Tuesday morning. Rev. S. B. Morrison of Newbern and Mr. Floyd Strickland officiated. Burial was in Mt. Zion Cemetery under the direction of Friendship Funeral Home. Mr. Blackmon was 83 years and 7 months, and until the past year had been very active. He walked to Mt. Zion and kept the cemetery in fine shape. He was not only a hard worker but honest and upright in all of his dealings and known to young and old as "Uncle Lee." His wife, Anna Singleton Blackmon, preceded him in death by 21 years. He leaves three children, Mrs. Orie Howe and Mrs. A. W. Climer of Dyersburg and Mrs. Credie Smith of Atwood; two sons, Herman Blackmon of Trumann, Ark., and Norton Blackmon of Detroit, Mich.; nineteen grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.

Alamo--Mrs. J. B. Avery, Jr., attended the funeral of her aunt, Mrs. Janie Sannin at Newton, Miss., last week.

Friendship--Mrs. Virgil Sanford and daughter, Margie, of Trimble, with Mrs. Allen Griffin, Miss Myrtie Miller, Messrs A. D. Jones, C. L. Jones, Noble Jones and J. D. Jones of Friendship attended the funeral of Mrs. Marie Martin at Nashville last week.

Alamo--Born to Mr. and Mrs. Paul Richardson, a daughter on Thursday, October 14, who has been named Lynda Elizabeth.

WEDDINGS


Thornton-Reece--Mrs. Gladys Thornton announce the marriage of her daughter, Miss Wanda Thornton to Charles Reece, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sol Reece of Alamo. The wedding took place in Hernando, Miss., on July 1, 1948 with Rev. M. C. Whitten, the Baptist minister officiating. The bride was dressed in a grey and white stripe suit with black accessories. The couple is making their home in Memphis where the groom is employed at International Harvester Co., and the bride is employed by the Bell Telephone Co.

Carleton-Cedol--Miss Clarmoine Carleton, daughter of Mrs. W. J. Carleton of Friendship and the late W. J. Carleton was married to Mr. Gene Cedol of Glendale, Calif., on Sunday, October 3, at Glendale. Mrs. Cedol attended Friendship High School and for several years has been connected with her sister, Mrs. James C. Fitzhugh, in business manufacturing and selling "Gladys Carleton Cosmetics." They will make their home in Glendale, where Mr. Cedol is in business.

OBITUARIES


Mose D. Brown--Services for Mose D. Brown, 73, who died at Gadsden Wednesday afternoon will be held at Pond Creek today (Thursday) at 3 p.m., Rev. B. A. Walker, officiating. His wife, six sons and one daughter survive. Ronk Funeral Home in charge.

Mrs. Jim Pittman--Mrs. Ellen Ann Pittman, wife of Jim Pittman, died Monday at 6 p.m. at her home in the Nance community where she had been a life long resident. Mrs. Pittman was 81 years of age and a member of the Church of Christ. Mr. and Mrs. Pittman had been married for 62 years. The survivors are six children, Herbert Pittman of Jackson; Johnnie, Lawrence, Willie Joe and Miss Allie Pittman and Mrs. W. T. Farrow of Alamo; three sisters, Mrs. J. F. Sisco, Bemis; Mrs. John Smith, Dyersburg; Mrs. Sarah Bailey, Romeo, Mich.; seven grandchildren, two great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services Thursday at 11 a.m. at Nance Church of Christ by Ernest Boone, local minister, assisted by A. C. Carpenter of Brownsville. Burial was in Nance Cemetery with Ronk Funeral Home in charge.

Mrs. W. R. Williams passes away--The death of Mrs. W. R. Williams, who passed away Sunday evening at 8:30 at her home in Bells was a shock to her many relatives and friends who did not realize the end was so near. Mrs. Williams had not been well for several months, but was able to be up and take drives around town until Friday when she felt worse and went to bed. She grew worse and died suddenly Sunday. The funeral was held Monday afternoon at 3:30 at the home with Rev. J. P. Irion, pastor of the Methodist Church of which she was a life long member, in charge assisted by Mr. Williams' pastor, Rev. E. B. Motley. Burial was in Belleview Cemetery in the family lot and was attended by a large number of friends and relatives. Mrs. Williams is survived by her husband and sister, Mrs. Sallie Koonce, brother, W. E. McQuarrie and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mrs. Matilda Bouldin--Mrs. Matilda Batey Bouldin, widow of Ab Bouldin and member of a widely known Crockett County family, died last week in a Humboldt hospital. She was 73. She made her home near Gadsden for many years and was a member of the Gadsden Church of Christ. She leaves her daughter, Miss Allie M. Raines, Gadsden; three sons, Byron Raines, Humboldt, Aubrey H. Raines, McKenzie, Robert H. Raines, Riverside, Mich., and three stepsons, Lige and Tom Raines, Gadsden and Jim Raines, Jackson and her brother, Ben Batey, Madison, Tenn. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery after services at Hunt Funeral Home.

Joe A. Cooper--Joseph A. Cooper, 76, died at his home in the Johnson Grove community Sunday at 8 p.m. He had been ill for sometime. Mr. Cooper was a farmer and at one time represented the Fourteenth District in the County Court. He was a member of Johnson Grove Baptist Church and was well known throughout this section. His wife, one son, Joseph Cooper, Jr., a daughter O'Neita May Cooper, three grandchildren and one half sister, Mrs. Sarah Barham, survive. Services were Tuesday afternoon at Johnson Grove Baptist Church by Rev. Ewell Hughes assisted by Rev. L. A. Smithmier. Burial was in Robertson Cemetery. Ronk Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Hinton W. Casey--Hinton W. Casey, native of this county, died Friday afternoon in the Haywood County Hospital at Brownsville following a heart attack. He was 41. He was a brother of Robert Casey, formerly of Alamo.

Maury City--Mr. and Mrs. Homer Revelle attended the funeral of Mr. Lacky Potter at Curve Thursday afternoon.

BIRTHS


Alamo--Born to Mr. and Mrs. Aubrey Compton, Jr., a daughter on Thursday, October 21st, who has been named Susan Kay.

Alamo--Born to Mr. and Mrs. George Gee at the Fitts-White Clinic in Jackson Friday, October 22, a daughter who has been given the name of Susan Carter.

Maury City--Born to Mr. and Mrs. George Gee, a daughter, Oct. 22, in Fitts-White Clinic in Jackson.

Gadsden--Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Reeves are the parents of a daughter born Tuesday, Oct. 26th, at St. Mary's in Humboldt.

ANNIVERSARY


Wed 53 years--Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Cooke of near Alamo recently celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary. They have three daughters, Mrs. Vervie Cash and Mrs. George White, both of Memphis, and Mrs. W. E. Austin of Alamo. A picture of the couple appeared in a recent issue of The Commercial Appeal.
