OBITUARIES


Mrs. John Bell Craig--Services for Mrs. John Bell Craig, wife of a Friendship farmer, were held at 2:30 Monday afternoon at Friendship Baptist Church with the Rev. W. C. Skinner officiating. Burial was in Sudbury Cemetery. Mrs. Craig, who was 68, died Saturday night at her home. She was born in Wichita Falls, Texas and had lived most of her life in Friendship. She also leaves three sisters, Mrs. Charles H. Smith of Wichita Falls, Mrs. M. J. Kavanaugh of Terrell, Texas, and Mrs. B. A. Bohannan of Colorado Springs, Colo. Friendship Funeral Home in charge.

Pfc. Roland R. O'Neal--Services for Pfc. Roland R. O'Neal, who was killed in France in the battle of St. Lo, July 15, 1944, were held Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Friendship Baptist Church with the Rev. W. C. Skinner officiating. Burial was in Belle Vernon Cemetery with military honors by Company I, 117th Infantry, Tennessee National Guard. Friendship Funeral Home was in charge. Private O'Neal, who was 29, was born in Friendship and attended Friendship High School. He volunteered for the Regular Army in 1941 after serving in the Tennessee Guard. He was a member of Friendship Baptist Church. He leaves his father, L. P. O'Neal of Friendship; three sisters, Mrs. Mildred Davison and Mrs. Katie Sue Reynolds of Friendship and three brothers, J. B. O'Neal of Friendship, Gordon O'Neal of Detroit and Robert O'Neal of Waynesboro, Ga.

Pvt. James Edward Warmath--Funeral services were held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Methodist Church in Friendship for Pvt. James Edward Warmath. Rev. C. O. Frey officiated. Burial was in Sudbury Cemetery with Sudbury Funeral Home in charge. Pvt. Warmath was killed in combat in France September 17, 1944, while serving with Patton's 3rd Army, 5th Division, 10th Inf. Co. L. The body arrived in Friendship Wednesday a.m. He leaves his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Warmath of Friendship; one sister, Mrs. J. O. Richardson, Jr., of Fowlkes; three brothers, Grady M. Warmath of 391 East Trigg, Memphis; Raymond and Herbert Warmath of Friendship.

Mrs. Mattie Bell Richardson--Funeral services were held today, Thursday, at the Quincy Methodist Church for Mrs. Mattie Bell Richardson, who died at her home near Alamo, Tuesday night at 10 p.m. Rev. B. A. Walker officiated. Burial was at Quincy with Ronk Funeral Home in charge. She was 78 and a Methodist. She leaves her husband, Jim Richardson; three sons, Willie and Ernest Richardson of Alamo, J. B. Richardson of Pontiac, Mich.; and one sister of Greenfield, Tenn.

Coxville--Mr. and Mrs. Reggie Cox of Fulton, Ky., Miss Blanche Cox of Memphis and Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Hopper were here Saturday to attend the funeral and burial of Pvt. Frank Hopper at Salem.

Gadsden--The community was grieved to learn of the sudden passing of Auburn Sorrell. Life is so uncertain and death is sure. Even a tiny insect can break the thread of life. We should be prepared at all times since this is only a place to prepare for the other life.

BIRTHS


Alamo--Born to Mr. and Mrs. Horace Norville of Toledo, Ohio, on Oct. 21, a son named Horace Scott. Horace is a son of R. A. Norville of Alamo.

Alamo--Born to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Turner of Memphis, Oct. 26, a daughter.

Alamo--Mrs. Herbert Malone spent the weekend in Ellendale while her daughter, Mrs. Howard McCord, was in Methodist Hospital. Mr. and Mrs. McCord are the parents of a son born at the hospital.

Coxville--Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Neal, Jr., of Dumas, Tenn. are announcing the birth of a son on Oct. 24. The baby is the grandchild of Mr. and Mrs. E. S. Cox of Coxville.

Gadsden--Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Raines are the parents of a baby son born Friday, Oct. 29th, at Oursler's Clinic. He has been named Franklin Wallace, Jr.

Friendship--Mr. and Mrs. James Carter Bedwell of Stokes announce the arrival of a son, Terry Williams, on Saturday, October 30.

Bells Items--Mr. and Mrs. L. H. Norville are announcing the arrival of two new grandchildren. Their daughter, Mrs. James Edwards and Mr. Edwards have a new son who was born Oct. 30 and Mr. and Mrs. Harold Norville have a daughter born Nov. 1.

Bells Items--Mrs. H. L. Cates is spending the week in Gadsden with her granddaughters, Nanda and Margaret Raines. Their mother, Mrs. Frank Raines and Mr. Raines are the parents of a son born Oct. 29 at St Mary's Hospital, Humboldt.

Bells Items--Mr. and Mrs. Hayden Miles are the parents of a son born last week at Baptist Hospital.

WEDDING


Miss Pruette wed to Thomas Glenn Carpenter--Miss Oneida Pruette, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. O. Pruette became the bride of Thomas G. Carpenter of Winston-Salem, N.C., son of Mr. and Mrs. Walker Glenn Carpenter of Richmond, Va., Saturday night at the Bellevue Baptist Church in Memphis. Dr. Robert G. Lee officiated. The bride was given in marriage by her father. Mrs. Theodore Stephens, Jr., was matron of honor and bridesmaids were Mrs. Blair Wright, Miss Barbara Cullins, Miss Dorcus Thomas and Miss Martha Jane Fallow. Oliver Barbour, Jr., was best man and groomsmen were Barry Miles Pruette, brother of the bride, Thomas Boston, Blair Wright and Theodore Stephens, Jr. Mrs. Pruette (mother of the bride) is the former Elsie Gibbons of Maury City. Immediately after the ceremony a reception was held at the home of the bride's parents at 3711 Poplar.

OBITUARIES


J. M. Carman--Services for J. M. (Mack) Carman were held at the Church of Christ in Friendship at 2 p.m. Sunday. Mr. A. C. Carpenter, Church of Christ minister of Brownsville, Tenn., officiated. Burial was in Sudbury Cemetery with Sudbury Funeral Home in charge. Mr. Carman died at his home in Friendship Saturday afternoon after an illness of two years. He was 77 and a member of the Church of Christ. Mr. Carman was a retired planter having moved to town about five years ago. Mr. Carman was an outstanding citizen and was for a number of years a leading grocery man of Friendship in partnership with the late William Curtis. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Laura Warden Carman and five brothers, Sam Carman, John Carman, Vernon Carman and Bob Carman all of Friendship and Edd Carman of St. Louis; five sisters, Mrs. Lucy Watson, Mrs. Mandy Clark, Mrs. Jennie Alford and Mrs. Winnie Vernon all of Friendship and Mrs. Hessie Sewell of Bradenton, Fla.

Mrs. D. G. Fisher--Services for Mrs. Lottie Stephenson Fisher were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Floyd's Chapel Methodist Church near Maury City. Rev. L. A. Smithmier officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery with Sudbury Funeral Home in charge. Mrs. Fisher died at Haywood County Memorial Hospital in Brownsville Monday night. Mrs. Fisher was the wife of D. G. Fisher, retired planter. In addition to her husband, she leaves four sons, W. E., Johnnie and Asa Fisher, all of Friendship, and Oscar Fisher of Pontiac, Mich.; two daughters, Mrs. L. E. Riddick of St. Louis and Mrs. Oscar Moncier of Maury City; four brothers, Rid, Myrd, George and Jess Stephenson, all of Shelbyville, Tenn.; two sisters, Mrs. Tom Pickle of Lewisburg and Mrs. George Moulder of Shelbyville.

Mrs. Laura McBride Davis passes away--Mrs. Laura McBride Davis, who recently celebrated her 90th birthday, passed away Saturday night at 10:30 at the home of her children, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Agee. Mrs. Davis had been in remarkably good health until three weeks ago when she fell and broke her hip and she had been in a critical condition following the fall. The funeral service was held Sunday afternoon at three o'clock at the Bells Church of Christ by the pastor, Rev. Earl Richardson, and her body was then carried to Old Field Cemetery near Maury City and buried in the family lot. This was the community where Mrs. Davis spent many years as a young woman and many other relatives are buried in this sacred place. She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Albert Agee, a son, Mr. Jim McBride, several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Pvt. Herbert L. Hammond--The body of Pvt. Herbert L. Hammond, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl B. Hammond of Friendship has been returned to Memphis from Italy aboard the Army Transport Lawrence Victory the army announced. Funeral arrangements will be made later.

Jettons--Mrs. Watt Lucas was notified Sunday of the sudden death of her brother, Mr. Lonnie McDearmon of Halls. He was president of the Bank of Halls.

BIRTHS


Alamo--Born to Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Raines of Gadsden, a daughter, who has been given the name Rosemarie. Mrs. Raines is the former Rosemary Jerman.

Coxville--Mr. and Mrs. Rye Tatum are announcing the birth of a son on Nov. 2. The baby has been named Ronald Rye.

Gadsden--Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Raines are very proud of a new baby daughter born Friday, Nov. 5, at Webb-Williamson Hospital in Jackson. She will be called Rose Marie.

Gadsden--Mr. and Mrs. Oursler Simmons are the parents of a daughter born Sunday, Nov. 7, at Oursler's Clinic in Humboldt.

Friendship--Mr. and Mrs. A. McClure are announcing the birth of a son at the Naval Hospital, Millington, on Nov 7. The young son is the grandson of Mrs. J. B. Edwards and the late Mr. Edwards. He has been given the name of his grandfather, Joseph Bradford, and will be called Joe.

WEDDINGS


Simpson-Marcum--Miss Maurine Simpson and Mr. Dalton Marcum were married Sunday at Corinth, Miss., surprising their friends. They left immediately for Peoria, Ill., where Mr. Marcum is employed.

Calfee-Hutchison--Miss Betty Calfee of Springfield, Mo., and Mr. Rivers Hutchison, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bate Hutchison of Alamo, Rt. 1, Crockett Mills, were married Oct. 9 at the Calvary Presbyterian Church. The Rev. A. J. McClung performed the ceremony. The couple is now at home at 818 Cherokee.

OBITUARIES


The Editors Say-So--Roark Bradford, versatile author, died Saturday at his French Quarter home in New Orleans at the age of 52. Bradford was the author of "Old Man Adam and His Chillun" from which the stage hit "Green Pastures" was adapted. Bradford was noted for other Negro folk tales including "John Henry" and "The Three Headed Angel." His short story "Child of God" won him the O. Henry Memorial Award as the best short story of 1927. Bradford was reared on a farm over in our adjoining county of Lauderdale and attended school in Halls. He was a brother of Mrs. Spence Brown of that City. His writings appeared in Collier's Cosmopolitan and many other leading magazines.

Pvt. Herbert L. Hammond--Funeral services were held at the Church of Christ in Friendship, Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. for Pvt. Herbert L. Hammond. Ross O. Spears, minister of the Church of Christ of Dyersburg officiated. Burial was in Sudbury Cemetery with Sudbury Funeral Home in charge. Pvt. Hammond was killed in action in Northern Italy September 28, 1944. He was 20. He leaves his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Hammond of Friendship.

John P. Edwards--Mr. John P. Edwards, 85 years old retired farmer of the Cairo community, died Sunday at 4 p.m. of a heart attack. Mr. Edwards was a native of Obion County but had lived here for the greater part of his life. He was a member of the Methodist Church and one of the community's most highly esteemed citizens. His wife, five children, Jessie, Charlie and Willie Edwards, Mrs. Jasper Holt and Mrs. Dell Johnson, all of Crockett County, and one brother, Bill Edwards of Beebe, Ark., survive. Funeral services were held Monday at 2:30 at Pond Creek Methodist Church, the Rev. B. A. Walker officiating. Burial was in Pond Creek Cemetery with Ronk Funeral Home in charge.

A. R. Warren--A. R. Warren of near Bells passed away at his home on Monday evening after 10 days illness due to a stroke. He was 76. Mr. Warren was a farmer of the Providence community. He and Mrs. Warren, who survive him, were married 52 years on Oct. 5. He is also survived by three children, T. L. Warren, Mrs. J. T. Bond and Mrs. M. C. Bowman, also two grandchildren, Charles and Linda Warren, all of Madison County. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon by Rev. Dan Overall of Jackson and Rev. Tafferty, the pastor. Six nephews served as pallbearers. Goosmann Funeral Home of Bells was in charge.

BIRTHS


Bells Items--Mr. and Mrs. John Drake of Memphis are announcing the arrival of a son recently at the Methodist Hospital, Memphis. Mrs. Drake is the former Verlie May Butler, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Butler. The Drakes have a little daughter who is visiting her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Butler, this week.

Elizabeth--Mr. and Mrs. Waymon Vernon are the parents of a son born on Tuesday.

ANNIVERSARY


Sixtieth Anniversary--Mr. and Mrs. George Todd celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary at their home near Gadsden recently. Mr. Todd is 86 and Mrs. Todd is 82. They have four children, Mrs. W. B. Nowell of Bells; Mrs. Grace Swable, Mobile, Ala.; Mrs. A. L. Kincaid, Gadsden; and E. G. Todd of Alamo. (This write up was with a picture of the couple.)

ENGAGEMENT


Engagement announced--Mr. and Mrs. Ewell Buckingham of Alamo, Tenn., announce the engagement of their daughter, Frances, to Jeff Davis, son of Rev. and Mrs. Carl Davis of Erin, Tenn. They will be married November 25th by Rev. Davis at their home. After the reception they will leave for a short honeymoon before leaving for Morton, Ill., where they will make their home.

OBITUARIES


Jim Conley--Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at the Nance Church of Christ for Mr. Jim Conley. Ernest V. Boone, minister of the Church of Christ of Alamo, officiated. Burial was in Nance Cemetery with Sudbury Funeral Home in charge. Mr. Conley died at his home in Alamo Wednesday night, November 17th. He had been in ill health for some time. He was 62 and a member of the Church of Christ. He was a retired planter, having moved to Alamo about three years ago from the Nance Community where he was born and reared. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Verlie Randle Conley and two sons, Otha Conley of Alamo and Charles Conley of Bells, five daughters Mrs. Evelyn Seward and Mrs. W. G. Snow, both of Memphis, Mrs. Leon Beville of Clifton, Colo., Mrs. Freddie Strange of Crockett Mills, and Miss Emma Lou Conley of Alamo; two brothers, S. A. Conley and H. J. Conley of Alamo; nine sisters, Mrs. Ed Stallings, Mrs. Watt Hunt, Mrs. Edd Boone, Mrs. Eva Speight and Mrs. Don Warren of Alamo; Mrs. Jim Hefley and Mrs. T. J. Williams, both of Memphis; Mrs. Leslie Kirby of Halls and Mrs. A. C. Dresden of Pulaski, Tenn.

Mrs. Otho Pitner--Services for Mrs. Annie Edwards Pitner, who passed away at her home at Bells Friday morning were held Saturday morning at 10 a.m. at the Church of Christ with Rev. Ernest Boone of Alamo in charge, assisted by Bro. A. C. Carpenter of Brownsville. Mrs. Pitner was born in Bells and lived there all her life with the exception of about five years. She was a faithful, loyal member of the Bells Church of Christ. She was fifty-six years old. She leaves her husband, Otho Pitner, two daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Powell of Edinburg, Texas, Miss Louise Pitner of Brownsville and one son, Charles Pitner of Paris, Tenn.; four sisters, Mrs. J. E. Rust of Bells, Mrs. D. L. Sturgis of Gibson, Mrs. J. M. Whitehorn of Jackson and Mrs. J. C. Appleby of Bells; one brother, Rev. Deryl Edwards of Carlton, Mo. The Church of Christ was filled Saturday morning with sorrowing relatives and friends and the many lovely flowers were evidence of love and friendship felt for Mrs. Pitner. Her body was carried to Belleview Cemetery and laid to rest in the Edwards family lot.

Pvt. William N. Shea--Funeral services for Pvt. William N. Shea were conducted by Rev. George Pressler at Mt. Olive Assembly of God Church at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 24. Burial was in Pond Creek Cemetery with Ronk Funeral Home in charge. Pvt. Shea, a member of the 349 Infantry Division, was killed in the North African area July 8th, 1944. He was 24. He leaves his mother, Mrs. Bernice Rebecca Shea, two brothers, Bud of Gibson Wells, Aubrey of Gadsden; three sisters, Mrs. Ewell Buckingham of Alamo, Mrs. Clyde Antwine of Gadsden and Mrs. Josephine Pressler of Dyer.

BIRTHS


Alamo--Born to Mr. and Mrs. John B. McDonald at the Brownsville Hospital Saturday, Nov. 20th, a seven-pound boy.

Jettons--Mr. and Mrs. Howard Sutton have a new baby girl born Monday in a Jackson hospital.

ENGAGEMENT


Engagement announced--Mr. and Mrs. Sol Reece of Alamo, Tenn., announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Frances Ann, to James Aubrey Light, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. James A. Light of Oak Hill, West Va., on November 24th at 6 o'clock in the Chapel at the Millington Naval Base in Millington.
