OBITUARIES
EDWARD G. SWANSON
Edward G. Swanson, aged 76, died Monday morning at his home at 780 Semmes, Memphis, following an illness of several weeks.
Mr. Swanson was born and reared at Friendship but lived at Crockett Mills the greater part of his adult life where he was postmaster for 35 years, retiring four years ago. He moved to Memphis in March of this year.
He was a member of the First Christian Church at Crockett Mills and a high-toned Christian gentleman. His friends were numbered by his acquaintances.
Services were held Tuesday at 3 p.m. at the Crockett Mills Christian Church. Rev. Frank Perry of Selmer officiating.
Burial was in the new Crockett Mills Cemetery.
Mr. Swanson is survived by one son, James Swanson, and two daughters, Mrs. Turner Johnson and Miss Mary Lou Swanson of Memphis.
MRS. EDD STALLINGS
Mrs. Edd H. Stallings of Alamo died at the Baptist Hospital in Memphis Wednesday a.m. after an illness of several years. She was 70, the former Lura Conley daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. D. H. Conley, pioneer family of Crockett County and was held in high esteem. She was a member of the Nance Church of Christ.
She leaves her husband; one son, Horace Stallings of Alamo; three grandchildren, Mary Ellen and Ruby Neal Stallings of Jackson and Billy Stallings of Alamo; two brothers, Alfred and Henry Conley of Alamo; eight sisters, Mrs. Eva Speight, Mrs. Jim Hefley and Mrs. T. J. Williams of Memphis; Mrs. A. C. Dreaden of Pulaski; Mrs. Don Warren, Mrs. Edd Boone and Mrs. Watt Hunt of Alamo and Mrs. H. L. Kirby of Halls.
Funeral services will be held at Nance Church of Christ today with Sudbury Funeral Home in charge.
BELLS YOUTH FATALLY HURT
Robert H. Nelson, 19, of Bells was fatally injured and six other young people were hurt when the car in which they were riding collided with a truck near the P. B. Conley place on Highway 20, about 700 yards South of the city limits of Alamo. The accident occurred Friday night about 10 o'clock. Young Nelson died at 3 o'clock Friday morning at the Jackson-Madison General Hospital.
Other occupants of the car were Barbara Ronk, 16, Nell Berta Ronk, 17, daughters of Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Ronk; Roberta Porter, 16, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F. M. Porter; Betty Brown, 16, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Willee Brown; Joyce Worrell, 17, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Worrell and James Grant, 17, son of Mrs. Louise Grant, all of Alamo. All were taken to the Prather clinic for treatment for cuts and bruises and were later dismissed with the exception of Joyce Worrell who is still suffering from severe injuries.
The girls, who had returned from the picture show at Bells, got in the Nelson boy's new Dodge car with James Grant and had planned a short trip in the new car. They were going south on the highway following a truck driven by James Branch, a Negro, when according to occupants of the car, the truck made a left hand turn to leave the highway in front of the Nelson car. Wayne Parlow, son of Theron Parlow, was in the truck at the time of the accident but neither Branch nor the Parlow boy was injured.
Services for Mr. Nelson were held Sunday afternoon at Bells Baptist Church, the Rev. J. E. Sharp officiating. Burial was in Belleview Cemetery with Ronk Funeral Home in charge. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Nelson of Bells who survive, together with one sister, Mrs. Martha Boone of Bells.
Robert was a graduate of Bells High School and had attended U. T. Junior College at Martin and Union University. He had many friends and his tragic death causes deep regret and much sympathy for the bereaved parents and sister.
MRS. MARY EMMA WALLACE
Mrs. Mary Emma Wallace died Saturday at the Baptist Hospital in Memphis of a heart attack. She was born in Dyer County on March 24, 1898 and lived in the Old Field Community near Maury City at the time of her death. She was a member of the Quincy Pentecostal Church. Her husband Walter Wallace preceded her in death.
Services were held Monday 10 a.m. at the Floyd's Chapel Methodist Church near Maury City. Rev. L. A. Smithmier officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery with Ronk Funeral Home in charge.
She leaves three daughters, Mrs. Adonia Johnson of Memphis, Mrs. Mary D. Turnage of Friendship and Miss Martha Wallace of Friendship; two sons, Donald Wallace of Milan; one brother, Carl Teague of Alamo and one sister, Mrs. W. T. Williams of Alamo.
MRS. ROSE FLORENCE WELLS
Funeral services were held on Tuesday at the Finley Methodist Church for Mrs. Rose Florence Wells, who died at her home in the Walnut Hill Community near Bells Monday after an illness of several weeks. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery with Ronk Funeral Home in charge.
She was born in Finley May 18, 1875. She was a Methodist.
She leaves five sons, John D. Wells, Finley; Frank Wells, Bells; Roy Wells, Gary, Ind.; Raymond Wells, Finley and Joe Harris Wells of Memphis; one daughter, Mrs. Julia Bloomfield of Detroit, Mich.

Mr. and Mrs. S. L. Bruce are announcing the birth of a daughter, Leanne Jane. She arrived at Webb-Williamson Hospital on April 26th. Mrs. Bruce is the former Miss Frances Colvett.

MISS ELEANOR GAY COX IS WED TO JAMES DOWDY
In a late afternoon ceremony yesterday in the chapel of St. John's Methodist Church, Miss Eleanor Gay Cox, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Shepard Livingston Cox of Humboldt, Tenn. became the bride of James Madison Dowdy, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Garfield Dowdy of Morrilton, Ark. The Rev. Nenien C. McPherson, Jr. officiated.
Nuptial music was presented by Miss Gloria Meyer, organist, and Miss Thelma Woodward, vocalist.
The bride was given in marriage by her brother, Robert Louis Cox. Miss Nancy Gay Smith, niece of the bride attended as maid of honor. Albert Howe served as best man. Harold Henson was usher.
Following the ceremony, the couple left for a wedding trip to New Orleans and Tower Isle, Jamaica. On their return, they will live at 122 Roberta Drive. Mr. Dowdy is associated with the Marquette Cement Manufacturing Co.

OBITUARIES
JOHN WALTER KING
Mr. Walter King, aged 73, died Monday afternoon at 4 o'clock at his home near Friendship after a long illness.
Mr. King was born and reared in Crockett County. He was a retired farmer.
Mr. King was a member of the Bethesda Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
Services were held Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock at the Bethesda Presbyterian Church. Rev. E. O. White and Carl Davis officiated.
Burial was in the Church Cemetery with Sudbury Funeral Home in charge.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Dora Flowers King; five sons, Quincy King, Dewitt King, Odell King and one son, Robert King deceased in 1935; one daughter, Mrs. Wilson Lee Jackson; 16 grandchildren and four great grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends to mourn his passing; also one brother, F. F. King of Maury City.
ASA ALONZO SWINDLE
Mr. Asa Alonzo Swindle, 80, died May 8 at Paris of a heart attack. He lived near Alamo most of his life, moving to Paris about two years ago.
Funeral services today, May 10, at 8 p.m. at Mt. Olive, Rev. George Presler officiating. Burial was in Babbs Cemetery with Ronk Funeral Home in charge.
JOHN W. LOVELACE
Services for John W. Lovelace, who died at his home near Bells Monday night were held at the Walnut Hill Baptist Church near Bells Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. Rev. W. B. Gossett officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery with Goosmann Funeral Home in charge. He was 68.
He leaves his wife, Mrs. J. W. Lovelace; four sons, James and Farrow Lovelace of Jackson and William Ray and J. C. Lovelace of Bells; four daughters, Mrs. Ernest Thompson, Mrs. Fred Brooks and Mrs. L. H. Crowe all of Jackson and Mrs. J. R. Sherrod of Bells.
OLIVER KENNER, SR., EX-MERCHANT
Oliver N. Kenner, Sr., retired Memphis merchant died at 4:20 a.m. Friday at his home at 1377 Monroe after a long illness. He was 67.
Mr. Kenner was born in Crockett County near Gadsden. He was married 46 years ago to the former Miss Lula Bailey, who survives him.
Mr. Kenner lived in Alamo for a number of years and had many friends here.
He was a member of the Methodist Church.
He also leaves a daughter, Mrs. Frank Smith of Memphis; four sons, Burl Kenner of High Point, N. C.; Oliver N. Kenner, Jr. of North Little Rock Veterans Hospital; Joe Kenner of Richmond, Va., and Jack Kenner of Memphis; one brother, J. R. Kenner of Bells and 10 grandchildren.
Services at National Funeral home at 1 p.m. Saturday, Rev. A. W. Beasley of Madison Heights Methodist Church and Rev. J. P. Irion of Jackson, Tenn., officiating.
MERCHANT DIED LAST TUESDAY
Services for Guy L. Ivy, life long Lauderdale Countian and merchant of the Porter's Gap community, were held Wednesday afternoon at the Melville Methodist Church. The Rev. J. D. Barlett officiated with burial in the family cemetery. Mr. Ivy died at 11:50 Tuesday morning at his home.
He leaves his wife, Mrs. Anne Hinton Ivy; a brother, John Ivy of Fowlkes, Tenn.; and a sister, Mrs. Oma Sims of Fort Worth, Texas.

Mr. Ivy was well known in Crockett County where he had a number of relatives and friends.
FINAL RITES ARE HELD AT TIGRETT
Services for Mrs. H. C. Ross were held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Tigrett Methodist Church. The Rev. Curry Goff, Pentecostal minister, and the Rev. C. O. Frey, Methodist minister, officiated. Burial was in Sudbury Cemetery with Sudbury Funeral Home in charge.
Mrs. Ross died Wednesday night after a lengthy illness. She was 59 and a member of the Pentecostal Church.
She leaves her husband, H. C. Ross, and three daughters, Mrs. Hester Marrs and Mrs. Wilson Castleman, both of Tigrett and Mrs. J. L. Watson, Jr. of Memphis; two brothers, H. L. Dyer of Newbern and L. W. Dyer of Tatumville; two sisters, Mrs. Emma Ross of Jackson and Mrs. Hattie Orr of Nashville.

Thomas Walters Doty, Jr., claimed the hand of Miss Eunice Wylie in a ceremony performed at the Presbyterian Church in Brighton, Tenn., Saturday, May 5, at which J. P. Irion of Jackson and Rev. Palmer Steele of Brighton officiated.
Mrs. Doty was Home Demonstration Agent for Crockett County before being transferred to Madison County. She has many friends in Crockett County.
EMERSON --- ARCHIBALD
Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Randle of Maury City, Tenn., announce the marriage of their niece, the former Gladys Emerson to Bryan Archibald, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Archibald of Crockett Mills.
They were married in San Bernardino, Calif., April 30 in a quiet ceremony. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Archibald and Mr. and Mrs. Denterson Archibald.
Mrs. Archibald, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T. R. Emerson, 551 Reese Street, Memphis, Tenn., is a graduate of Crockett High School, Maury City. She attended Lambuth College in Jackson.
Mr. Archibald is a graduate of Hamlett-Robertson High School, Crockett Mills and attended the University of Tennessee, Martin.
The couple will live in Victorville, Calif., where he is serving with the Air Force.

Miss Melva Jewel Laman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Orin Laman of Alamo became the bride of Mr. G. W. Birmingham, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Birmingham of Pierce, Tenn., April 21, at Corinth, Miss.
The couple was attended by Miss Mary Margrine Laman, sister of the bride and Mr. Billy Hix, a friend.
The young couple is living in Pierce, Tenn.

OBITUARIES
J. F. KNOX
J. F. Knox died Friday at 3 p.m. at Prather Clinic, after a brief illness.
Mr. Knox, a resident of Alamo since 1928, was 87 years of age. He was a native of Arkansas but spent the great part of his life in this county. He was a successful farmer until his retirement and was connected with the Bank of Alamo for a number of years as stockholder and director. Mr. Knox was a member of the Methodist Church and held in the highest esteem by all who knew him.
Services were held at the Baptist Church Saturday afternoon, the Rev. H. A. Townsend officiating assisted by Rev. Floyd Cates. Burial was in Alamo Cemetery with Ronk Funeral Home in charge.
He leaves his wife; a son, Harry Knox, assistant cashier of the Bank of Alamo; a daughter, Mrs. H. V. Reynolds of Alamo; two half sisters, Mrs. Ozelle McAuley of Westport, Tenn., and Mrs. Fannie Chambers of Halls, and a granddaughter, Miss Martha Jane Reynolds.
C. E. TAWWATER
An inspector in the Memphis and Shelby County Health Department Claude E. Tawwater of 795 North McNeil died at 7:50 Sunday morning at Kennedy Veterans Hospital where he had been a patient since March 10. He was 56.
Mr. Tawwater, a veteran of World War I, had been with the Health Department for the past five years. Previously, he was associated with the Gayoso Hotel for nine years and was in the United States Marshal's office 11 years before that.
Born near Jackson, Tenn., Mr. Tawwater had been a resident of Memphis 25 years. He served 11 months with the Army in Europe during the First World War. A Mason, he also was a member of Bellevue Baptist Church, the 40 et 8, American Legion and Jackson Boulevard Civic Club.
He leaves his wife, Mrs. Zana Tawwater; his mother, Mrs. J. H. Tawwater of Jackson, Tenn.; five brothers, Elmer Tawwater, Oscar Tawwater and Johnny Tawwater of Jackson, Fenner Tawwater of Alamo, Tenn., and Floyd Tawwater of Medina Tenn.; a sister, Mrs. Fanny Birdsong of Jackson and several nieces and nephews.
Services were at 1 p.m. Tuesday afternoon at National Funeral Home with the Rev. Tom Pope officiating. Burial was in Pond Creek Cemetery.
Mr. Tawwater lived in Crockett County near Alamo for several years.
MRS. NANCY KATHERYN HEFLEY
Mrs. Nancy Katheryn Hefley died Sunday at the home of her brother, Frank Anderson in Memphis. She was 76.
Mrs. Hefley will be remembered in Friendship as Mrs. Kate Grimmett, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Anderson. Her second marriage was to Mr. Newt Rice of Crockett Mills who died about 25 years ago. She later married Judge John A. Hefley of Woodland Mills who passed away several years ago.
Services were held Monday at Woodland Mills Baptist Church and interment at Union City.
In addition to her brother, she also leaves six stepsons, Jack Rice and Algie Rice of Memphis, David Rice of Crockett Mills and J. F. Hefley, Herbert Hefley and Wilbur Hefley of Woodland Mills and five stepdaughters, Mr. I. A. Ellington of Woodland Mills, Miss Carolyn Rice of Little Rock, Mrs. Belle Green of Friendship and Mrs. J. F. Nichols and Mrs. Sam Dean of Crockett Mills. J. W. Norris Funeral Home was in charge locally.
OTTO EMISON
Funeral services will be held this afternoon (Thursday) at 2:30 at the Cypress Church for Mr. Otto Emison, who died at his home near Bells Tuesday a.m. of a heart attack. Burial was in the church cemetery with Goosmann Funeral Home in charge.
He was 51 and a well-known farmer of the Fruitvale community.
His wife survives.

Hinton L. Casey of Milan, son of the late R. B. Casey and Mrs. Casey of Bells, died of a heart attach Monday. Funeral services were held at the First Christian Church in Bells Wednesday a.m. Burial was in Belleview Cemetery.
ALAMO
Mrs. Lorena Wayne Marrs of Water Valley Miss., died Sunday morning at the Humboldt hospital. Mrs. Marrs' husband taught school here at one time. Mrs. Marrs was a niece of Mrs. Lee Follis and had frequently visited here.
Mrs. Helen S. Shavers, wife of Pfc. Bertie Shavers, died Friday at Camp Hood, Texas after a few days illness. She was reared near Humboldt and was a sister of Mrs. Dorance Hunt of Alamo.
MAURY CITY
Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Revelle attended the funeral of Mrs. J. M. Kendall in Jackson Monday afternoon.
MARRIAGES
McLEAN --- DUNBAR
Before a background of palm greenery and white gladioli lighted by glowing tiers of white tapers, Miss Bettye Jean Dunbar pledged her marriage vows to Robert Gallatin McLean of Alamo in the home of the bride's parents the afternoon of May 11th. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Franklin Dunbar of Grand Junction and Mr. McLean is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Elemuel B. McLean of Alamo. The Rev. Roy Ferguson, pastor of the First Baptist Church officiated.
A program of nuptial music was presented by Mrs. C. L. Cox of Grand Junction, pianist and Mrs. Harris Bradley of Bolivar, vocalist.
The bride was given in marriage by her father. Miss Joyce Browder of Grand Junction attended her as maid of honor. John Dunlap, Jr. of Memphis was best man. Ushers were James Dunbar, brother of the bride, of Knoxville, and Woodfin McLean, cousin of the groom, of Alamo.
Following the ceremony her parents entertained with a beautiful reception. Miss Jeanette Gearhiser of Big Sandy presided at the register. Cousins of the bride, Mrs. W. E. Roper of Sheffield, Ala. and Mrs. Jack Halford of Memphis assisted at the refreshment table.
Later Mr. and Mrs. McLean left for a short wedding trip. On their return Mr. McLean will report to duty with the U. S. Air Force and will be joined by Mrs. McLean at a later date.
Mrs. McLean was a graduate of Grand Junction High School and attended Virginia Intermont College of Bristol, Va. Mr. McLean attended high school at Alamo, and was graduated from the School of Law at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville where he was a member of Phi Delta Phi and Sigma Chi fraternities. Before being called to active duty Mr. McLean was employed by the Tennessee Valley Authority.

A wedding of much interest was that of Miss Clara Nell Gage, daughter of Mrs. Mary M. Gage of near Bells and Mr. Harry Roger Williams, son of Mr. Lem Williams of near Providence, Haywood County, on May 4th. The vows were taken at the First Baptist Church in Corinth, Miss. After a short honeymoon in the Eastern states, Mr. and Mrs. Williams are making their home with the groom's father.
STEPHENSON --- WILLIAMS
In a simple, but impressive and beautiful wedding Sunday morning, May 13, at the Bells Methodist Church, Miss Betty Stephenson and Mr. Henry Williams pledged their troth in the presence of the immediate families and a few close friends. Rev. J. E. Sharp, pastor of the Baptist Church officiated.
At eight o'clock Mrs. G. W. Mobley, organist, played the eight o'clock chimes which added a beautiful note to the wedding plus other selections. Mrs. B. B. Barnes was vocalist.
The bride was given in marriage by her brother Harber Stephenson. The bride's only attendant was her sister, Mrs. Harber Stephenson. Mr. Billy Stephenson attended the groom as best man.
After a short wedding trip to the Smoky Mountains, Mr. and Mrs. Williams will be at home in their new apartment in the A. T. Chronister home.

OBITUARIES
ELKHORN RESIDENT IS BURIED THURSDAY AT FRIENDSHIP
Funeral services for Thomas Jefferson Cobb, 80, who died on Tuesday night at his home in the Elkhorn community, were held on Thursday afternoon at Crockett Mills Christian Church in Crockett Mills in Crockett County. Burial was in Providence Cemetery.
Mr. Cobb, a native Crockett Countian moved to Henry County two years ago. Milligan and Ridgeway Funeral Home in Paris had charge of arrangements at the home in Elkhorn and the body was carried to Crockett County for burial with Friendship Funeral Home in charge.
Survivors are the wife, Mrs. Annie Taylor Cobb; four sons, Dawson and C. R. Cobb of Henry County; H. R. Cobb, Memphis, and E. D. Cobb, Detroit; a brother, Macon Cobb at Friendship; eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
EXCITING BALL GAME TOO MUCH FOR GUY J. HOWELL
It was the eighth inning of the ball game, the score was tied, the Chicks were at bat, and the bases were loaded. One of the most excited spectators was Guy J. Howell, firm supporter of the Chicks in good times and bad. He hadn't missed a home game in years, but he never got to see that winning run come in last night for the tension proved too much and he suffered a heart attack minutes before it was scored. He was taken to Baptist Hospital in a Spencer-Sturia ambulance and was pronounced dead at 10:10. The game officially ended at 10:09.
Mr. Howell, who lived at 1627 Monroe, was 65. He was born in Friendship, Tenn., and moved to Memphis many years ago. He was a pipe fitter and had been with Memphis Light, Gas and Water Division the past eight years. He was a Methodist.
He leaves his wife, Mrs. Edna Biddle Howell, Memphis; his brother, Ed Howell, Memphis, and his sister, Mrs. Grayson Hardin, Paducah, Ky.
Cosmopolitan Funeral Home was in charge.
MRS. JOE AGEE
Mrs. Drane Callis Agee died at her home in Friendship Tuesday afternoon after an illness of five months. She was born in Dyer, Tenn., December 1, 1880. She was married to Joe Agee in 1902. They have lived in Friendship for the past 48 years and have many friends who will regret to hear of her passing. She was a member of the Methodist Church.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday at 3 p.m. at the Friendship Methodist Church with Rev. C. O. Frey officiating. Burial was in Belle Vernon Cemetery with Friendship Funeral Home in charge.
She leaves her husband, Joe Agee of Friendship; one daughter, Mrs. Hollis Hawkins of Friendship; three sisters, Mrs. Mollie Barrow of Trenton, Mrs. Audrey Flowers of Trenton and Mrs. Grace Parker of Bushnell, Fla.; three brothers, C. W. Callis of Nashville, G. C. Callis of Trenton and N. R. Callis of Trenton and six grandchildren.

Mr. Frank Connell, Jr., of the U.S. Navy, Norfolk, Va., spent a few days leave here with his wife and little son. The son was born at Prather Clinic Saturday, May 19th.

Sfc. and Mrs. J. M. Agee of 1002 Central Ave., Hopkinsville, Ky., announce the marriage of their daughter, Miss Billie Marie Agee to Cpl. Arthur R. Charpenter of New Bedford, Mass.
The wedding was solemnized on Tuesday, May 15, 1951 in the home of L. A. Allen, minister of the Foote Street Church of Christ in Corinth, Miss. The couple's only attendants were Mr. Jere Via, minister of the Little River Church of Christ, and Mrs. Via of Hopkinsville.
Mrs. Charpenter will be graduated from Hopkins High School on May 29. Cpl. Charpenter is now stationed at Fort Campbell.
The bride and groom are currently making their home in Hopkinsville.

OBITUARY
FRANK CONNELL, III
Frank Connell, III, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Connell, Jr., of Alamo died at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. McNeil Hopper in Alamo Tuesday night. Frank is the only child of Mr. and Mrs. Connell, Jr., was born May 19, 1951. The paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Connell, Sr., live near Alamo.
Funeral services will be held at Ronk Funeral Home conducted by H. A. Towsend and E. V. Boone of Alamo with burial in Maury City Cemetery with Ronk Funeral home in charge. The time of the funeral is unknown pending the arrival of the father, Frank Connell, Jr., who is in the U.S. Navy, stationed at Norfolk, Va.
