OBITUARIES

Shepard L. Cox--Shepard L. Cox, highly esteemed citizen of the Coxville community, died Saturday after a long illness. He had been confined to his bed for nearly a year. Mr. Cox was a former member of the Crockett County Court and an outstanding citizen and farmer of his community. He represented the Fourth District in the court and before his illness was active in civic affairs. He leaves his wife; five children, Mrs. James S. Smith, Robert L. Cox and Mrs. J. M. Dowdy, all of Memphis; Mrs. Charles Tatum of Detroit, Mich.; and Walter Cox of Humboldt; two brothers, Mose Cox of Gadsden and Tom Cox of Humboldt, and one sister, Mrs. Lillie Thomas of Humboldt. Services were held Sunday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. at the home of the Rev. William Huie, pastor of the First Christian Church of Humboldt. Burial was in Cox's Chapel Cemetery with Ronk Funeral Home in charge.

Train - Car Smash: Hurled to Death--John Edward Mann, 34, farmer, was hurled to his death Sunday afternoon when his 1942 Mercury was struck by an eastbound L&N passenger train at Cobb's Switch near Bells. Mr. Mann's car was found 300 feet from his body on the right of way. He lived in the Cobb's Community. Funeral services were held at 3:00 p.m. at Holly Grove Baptist Church, Rev. L. M. Mayer officiating. Burial was in Holly Grove Cemetery. Brownsville Funeral Home in charge. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Frances Haynes Mann; two daughters, Mary Elizabeth and Manda Annette Mann; his son Clark Mann and three sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Burne of Memphis, Mrs. Clyde Garrett and Mrs. L. J. Outlaw of Cobb's.

Joseph McCall Vickers--Joseph McCall Vickers died at his home in Humboldt early Wednesday a.m. after an illness of three and one half years. He was born in McNairy County in 1878 and was married to Mrs. Jennie Vickers in 1923. They lived in the Friendship Community for several years before moving to Humboldt. He was a member of the Zion Hill Baptist Church and has many friends here who are sorry to hear of his death. Funeral services will be at Zion Hill with burial in the church cemetery. Rev. Henry Jackson of Dyersburg and Mrs. W. B. Gossett of Bells will officiate. Friendship Funeral Home is in charge. The time is unknown until word is received from a daughter in Africa. He leaves his wife and one son, Wade Vickers of Friendship Rt.; two daughters; Mrs. Sue Freeman of Halls and Mrs. Troupe of Tripoli, Africa; one brother, Ed Vickers of Kosciusko, Miss.; three stepchildren, 10 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.


BIRTHDAY

M. D. Brasfield and Grandson, Franklin--M. D. (Dorsie) Brasfield, one of the oldest and most highly respected citizens of the county, celebrated his ninetieth birthday on Sunday, May 20th, with a big dinner at his home near Friendship. There were about sixty persons present. Mr. Brasfield was born near Cairo and was married to Miss Mary Lou Lambert, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Lambert. Mrs. Brasfield passed away a number of years ago. There are six children living; Kyle, Raymond and Finis, all of Friendship, Bob and Bill of Alamo and Harry of Memphis; also one sister, Mrs. Lou Jones of Monroe, La. All were present at the dinner. Mr. Brasfield has two daughters deceased, Mrs. Effie Hamilton and Mrs. Mary Hawkins.

Roberts' New Son--Mr. and Mrs. Connie Roberts announce the birth of a son who has been given the name, Connie Mike, on May 20, 1951. Mrs. Roberts is the former Pansy Fisher who was married to Mr. Roberts on August 11, 1950.


REUNION

Porter Family Reunion--The brothers and sisters of the Porter family met at the School House at Liberty Hall for an all day meeting and dinner with singing in the afternoon. Everyone had an enjoyable day. Those present were Mrs. Bettye Bailey; Mr. and Mrs. Porter Richardson and son, Gary; Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Porter and girls, Jean, Jo and Ann; Mr. and Mrs. Zrilis McCoy; Sgt. And Mrs. A. C. Crossnoe and Suzanne; Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Porter; Mr. and Mrs. Ruffin Porter and daughters, Glenn Rose and Shelby Jean; Mrs. Robert Gene Jacocks; Mrs. Lela Stephenson; Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Todd and family; Mr. and Mrs. Ewell Porter and Danny; Mrs. Walter Martin; Mrs. W. G. Perry of Littlefield, Texas. Mrs. W. G. Perry is visiting her brother and sister here. Mrs. Martin is Mrs. Perry's daughter. OBITUARIES

James R. Rosamond-Retired Salesman, 75, Dies in Humboldt Home--Services were held at Hunt Funeral Home Sunday afternoon for James R. Rosamond, a retired salesman, who died at 6:00 p.m. Saturday night at his home in Humboldt after a long illness. The Rev. W. M. Huie officiated. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery. Mr. Rosamond was 75. Born and reared at Gadsden, he was the son of the late John W. and Elizabeth Rosamond. He traveled for a wholesale Memphis grocery house and retired 6 years ago. He was a member of the First Baptist Church at Humboldt. His wife died five years ago. He leaves a foster son, James R. Smith of Columbia, S.C.; a sister, Mrs. D. B. Jackson of Melrose, N.M., and a brother, John H. Rosamond of Humboldt.

W. J. Jones--W. J. Jones, 63, died Saturday at his home in DuQuoin, Ill. where he had lived for a number of years. He was a native of Crockett County and was reared in Maury City. Mr. Jones was a member of the Christian Church in DuQuoin. Funeral services were held on Monday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Baptist Church in Maury City, the Rev. J. T. Drace officiating. He leaves his wife, a daughter, Miss Betty Ann Jones of DuQuoin; three sisters, Mrs. E. C. Pittman of Alamo, Mrs. Wayne Poston and Mrs. W. A. Griffin of Maury City, and three brothers, J. B. Jones of Maury City, L. H. Jones of Humboldt and Clevie Jones of Alamo and Knoxville.

J. D. Thomason--Services for J. D. Thomason, who died of a heart attack at the Jackson Madison County General Hospital Monday, were held at 2:30 Wednesday at Midway Baptist Church. The Rev. James Farrar and the Rev. E. L. Franks officiated. Burial was in Brigance Cemetery near Bells under the direction of Smith Funeral Home. Mr. Thomason was 46. Born and reared in Crockett County, he had made his home in Jackson for 18 years. He was an employee of the GM&O Railroad shops. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Mellie Horton Thomason; a daughter, Mrs. Andrew James of Bruceton, Tenn.; three stepsons, Woodrow Pipkin, Hershell Pipkin and Donald Pipkin, all of Jackson; a brother, Bill Thomason of Cottonwood Point, Mo.; three sisters, Mrs. Ben James and Mrs. H. B. Doolin of Bells and Mrs. F. W. McWilliams of Puente, Calif.

Alamo--Born to Mr. and Mrs. Dean Speight, a son on June 8th.

Fruitvale--Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Lee Haynes are announcing the birth of a baby boy, Friday, June 9.

REUNION

Mays Reunion at Chickasaw Park Sunday--Those left of Uncle Jimmy Mays family met at Chickasaw Park Sunday for a reunion: Mrs. Rob Mays of Friendship, Mrs. Dave Craig of Alamo, Ed Mays of Memphis, Mrs. Earl Overton of Ramer, Tenn. with a part of their children and grandchildren, 33 in number. All reported a good time.

OBITUARIES

R. R. (Bob) Young--Funeral services were held on Wednesday (yesterday) at the Elizabeth Methodist Church for Mr. Bob Young, who died at his home near Friendship Tuesday after an illness of three weeks. Burial was in the church cemetery with Friendship Funeral Home in charge. He was 76 and a well-known farmer. He leaves two daughters, Mrs. Albert Withee of DeKalb, Ill., and Mrs. Roy Humphreys of Northville, Michigan; two sons, Edd Young of Decatur, Ill., and Frank Young of Friendship; one brother Sam Young of Tigrett.

Farmer Drowns in Forked Deer--Russell Willis Elmore of the Johnson Grove Community drowned late Sunday when his car missed a bridge and plunged into the Forked Deer River two miles east of Halls. Roy B. Sudbury of Halls recovered the body. Homer Norville, a companion in the car escaped uninjured. Mr. Elmore was 32 years of age and was a native of Lauderdale County. He had farmed in the Johnson Grove Community for sometime. Services were held Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. at Archer's Chapel Methodist Church with Rev. Ewell Hughes officiating. Burial was in Archer's Chapel Cemetery with Ronk Funeral Home in charge. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Julian Elmore of Johnson Grove; one brother, Herman Elmore of Johnson Grove and three sisters, Mrs. Ottie May Victor of Halls; Mrs. Russell Byrum and Miss Gladys Elmore of Alamo.

Henry N. Spencer--Word has been received here of the death of Mr. Henry Nelson Spencer who passed away on Tuesday, June 12, at his home in Miami, Fla., at the age of 77 years, 5 months and 3 days. Burial was in Little Rock, Ark., on Friday, June 15 at 2 o'clock. He worked for the Arkansas Power and Light Co. for more than thirty years and after his retirement he went to Miami to make his home. He was reared in Crockett County and is survived by two nieces, Mrs. Raymond Arnold, Mrs. Cecil Davis, one nephew, Horace Lowery and other relatives of Crockett County and also one stepdaughter, Mrs. Lollye Blanz of North Little Rock, Ark.

Aussie R. Reasons--Aussie Raines Reasons, well-known citizen of the Seventh District, died Sunday from a cerebral hemorrhage. He was stricken about one week before his death. Mr. Reasons was 63 years of age, a life long resident of this county, a farmer and for several years a Deputy Sheriff. Services were held Tuesday morning at 10:00 a.m. at Salem Presbyterian Church. John B. Hardeman officiating. Burial was in Salem Cemetery with Ronk Funeral Home in charge. He is survived by his wife; seven children, Truman Reasons of Rutherford, Douglas Reasons, Marshal Reasons, Dorris G. Reasons all of Humboldt, Mrs. Genrose Crabtree of Maryville, Tenn., D. W. Reasons of Alamo, Mrs. Gladys Porter of Humboldt; three brothers, Leroy Reasons, Frazier Reasons and Willie Reasons, all of Humboldt.

A. T. Cleek, Jr.--Services for A. T. Cleek, Jr., were held Saturday afternoon at Floyd's Chapel Methodist Church near Maury City with Rev. C. W. Climer and L. A. Smithmier officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery with Sudbury Funeral Home in charge. Mr. Cleek died early Friday at his home near Poplar Grove Community after an illness of about two years. Mr. Cleek, a well known farmer of Crockett and Lauderdale Counties, was born near Friendship, Tenn., lived there until 1935, moved to Lauderdale County and spent the rest of his life there. He was 57 and a member of the Methodist Church. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Robbie Wiley Cleek; eight sisters, Mrs. S. J. Martin and Mrs. Harry Martin of Stanton, Tenn., Mrs. J. D. Sanders of Armorel, Ark., Mrs. Bob Jones, Mrs. J. F. Jackson, Mrs. George Fitzhugh, Mrs. Russell Dawson and Mrs. Will Cunningham, all of Halls and a brother, Alvin Cleek of Halls.

ENGAGEMENT

Greene - Hogan--Mr. and Mrs. Harry Greene of near Friendship announce the engagement of their daughter, Miss Jean Marilyn Greene to Norman Hogan, son of Mr. and Mrs. Porter Hogan of West Memphis, Ark. Miss Greene is a graduate of Dyersburg High School and Freed-Hardeman College, Henderson. Mr. Hogan is a graduate of Hulbert-West Memphis High School and Freed-Hardeman College. The wedding will be solemnized at the home of the bride's parents June 22.


WEDDINGS

Redmond - Revelle--On Thursday, June 14th, Mrs. Erie Redmond of Bells became the bride of Mr. Jimmy Revelle of Bells. The wedding took place in Corinth, Miss. They are making their home near Bells.

Porter-Bunch--Mr. and Mrs. Ira Porter of Humboldt, Tenn., are announcing the marriage of their daughter, Edwina Faye to Thomas Edward Bunch, son of Mrs. Thomas Bryan Bunch and the late Mr. Bunch of Lexington, Tenn. The marriage took place Saturday, October 7, 1950 in Rossville, Ga., with the Rev. George McClure of Rossville performing the ceremony. Mrs. Bunch attended the University of Tennessee Junior College, Martin, and graduated June 4th from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. She was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority. Mr. Bunch attended West Tennessee Business College at Jackson. He served 3 years in the Army Air Force during World War II, two years of which were spent overseas. He is now employed by the United States Post Office Department at Lexington. The couple will make their home in Lexington.

OBITUARIES

Jack C. Castellaw--Jack C. Castellaw, a retired druggist of Ennis, Texas, died on June 14th. He had been in bad health for several years. Mr. Castellaw was born in Haywood County. He had lived in Texas many years. He was 78 years old. He was the brother of the late T. J. Castellaw. He leaves his wife Mrs. Lela Pender Castellaw.

Leo C. Wainright--Services for Leo C. Wainright, U. S. Engineers employee the past 20 years and a World War I veteran, who died Saturday at Kennedy Veterans Hospital after 5 weeks illness, were at 11:00 a.m. Monday at National Funeral Home, Rev. Landren Childers officiating. Burial was in Belleview Cemetery at Bells, Tenn. at 2:00 p.m. Mr. Wainright lived at 1707 Foster. He was born at Bells and had made his home in Memphis since boyhood. He served with the 115th Field Artillery in France during World War I and was wounded during the St. Mihiel Drive in the Argonne Forest. He leaves a sister and three brothers. He was 53. -Press-Scimitar.

Memphian Loses Life at Sardis Lake Party--Ben Foster, 26, drowned while swimming in Sardis Lake, Miss., Sunday. Mr. Foster was with a group of fifteen neighbors on a "block party." He was apparently seized with cramps while swimming in the lower Sardis Lake below the dam. Neighbors swimming nearby did not hear his cry for help before he went under. Those on shore heard him cry out and started to rescue but were too late. Mr. Foster's wife and two children, Larry 7, and Mike 4, were in the party. The Fosters lived in Alamo last year where Mr. Foster was manager of the Kirby Jones store for a few months. He moved from Jackson to Memphis six months ago and was employed as appliance salesman for Buckley Credit Stores. He was a native of Bowman, Ark., and was with the Fourth Marines during the last war. Mr. Foster was wounded on Okinawa and still had a piece of steel in his spine, the doctors refusing to operate because it might have been fatal.

Bells Items--Mrs. Lyman Joyner and infant daughter came home Friday from St. Mary's Hospital in Humboldt.

Gadsden--Mr. and Mrs. James Mitchell have a baby daughter born at St. Mary's Sunday, June 24.


BIRTHDAY

Birthday Dinner--On Sunday, June 24th, the children and grandchildren of Mr. Luther Leggett gathered at his home near Friendship to celebrate his 72nd birthday with a surprise birthday dinner. Each one carried well-filled baskets of delicious food, which was spread on a long table in the back yard. Mr. Leggett and Mrs. Katie Green gave thanks for the bountiful meal and the happy occasion. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. Johnnie Oliver of Alamo, Mr. and Mrs. Weldon Moss and children of Gates, Mr. and Mrs. L. B. Leggett, Jr. and children of Dyersburg, Mrs. Cecil Jetter and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Bob Balentine and son, Mr. and Mrs. Max Browder, Mrs. Katie Green, Bobby Joe Perry and Mr. and Mrs. Luther Leggett of Friendship, Mr. and Mrs. Jetter of Union City were guest in the afternoon. Mr. Leggett received many nice and useful gifts and everyone left late in the afternoon looking forward to many more such happy occasions and wishing Mr. Leggett many more birthdays.

Sara Colvett Celebrates 4th Birthday--On Friday afternoon, June 22, Mrs. H. C. Colvett entertained her daughter, Sara Frances with a birthday party, it being her fourth birthday. The children enjoyed games and picture making on the shady lawn, which was decorated, with colorful balloons. Lemonade, individual decorated cakes and ice cream were served. Balloons, horns and bubble gum were given as favors to the following: Malinda McDaniel, Nan Tanner, Brenda Van Cleave, Linda Richardson, Mollie and Rosemarie Raines, Renee and Craig Spellings, Mary Lynn Colvett, Mollie Ann and Tommy Rice, Cecelia Howell, Olivia and Barry Bates, Mary Jo Avery, Charles Mount, Tommy Green, Tommy Joe Warren, Lyle Poston and Randle Branch, Bonnie and Barbara Griffin, Dickie Fewell, Suzanne Moore and Glenda Elkins. Sara opened the birthday gifts and thanked each little guest who left wishing her many more happy birthdays.

Sandra Camp has Birthday Party--Mrs. Hess Camp delightfully entertained 20 little friends of her daughter, Sandra, Saturday afternoon when she celebrated her 6th birthday. Children's games were played after which each guest was given a balloon and served ice cream and cake. Mrs. Camp was assisted by Mrs. Marion Clark of Milan, Mrs. Jack Camp and Mrs. Buddy Tweedy of Friendship.


WEDDINGS

Bells Items--Miss Martha Hays and brother, Maurice Hays, left Tuesday for Winston Salem, N. C. where they will attend the wedding of their brother, Jim Hays to Miss Martha Thompson on Friday night, June 29, at Winston Salem.

Gadsden--Miss Patsy Jo Jackson and Elton Moore were quietly married at the home of Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Black in Maury City Sunday with Mr. Black officiating. Mrs. Moore is the daughter of Mrs. Carol (Jake) Jackson and the late Mr. Jackson and a graduate of Gadsden High School. Mr. Moore is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Porter Moore of near town. After a short trip they will make their home in Humboldt where both have employment.

Bryant - Herndon--The following announcement has been received by Bells friends: Mr. and Mrs. Otto Bryant announce the marriage of their daughter, Eloise to Mr. Douglas O. Herndon on Friday, June the first, nineteen hundred and fifty one, Bells, Tenn.

Miss Hawkins, Mr. Kingsley are Wed--Miss Pattye Rue Hawkins, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lowell Patterson Hawkins, Friendship, was married Saturday to Luke Kingsley, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Luke Kingsley, 2043 Higbee. The ceremony took place at 11 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with Msgr. Merlin F. Kearney officiating. The bride was given in marriage by her father. Her only attendant was the groom's sister, Miss Margaret Kingsley. Donnie Johnson attended Mr. Kingsley as best man. Ushers were Harold Richmond and Jack Smith. Preceding the ceremony a program of wedding music was given by Miss Nancy Calvert, organist, Mrs. Clifford Foster, violinist and Don Norbert, vocalist. Mr. Kingsley and his bride will leave for a brief Southern wedding trip. -Press-Scimitar. (Church and dress descriptions were omitted.)

Vows are Taken by Miss Underhill--In a setting of quiet beauty at her home on Church Avenue in Covington on June 5, Miss Betty Ruth Underhill, daughter of the Rev. and Mrs. Ernest Vernon Underhill became the bride to Jack Dee Traywick, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Dee Traywick, Marshville, N.C. The bride's father, pastor of the First Methodist Church at Covington, officiated. Preceding the ceremony Ernestine Underhill, pianist, gave the nuptial music. Miss Frances Anderson of Martin, Tenn. was the maid of honor. Johnny Coppedge, Jr. of Stanton was best man. Following the ceremony the Rev. and Mrs. Underhill entertained with a reception. The couple left on a trip to the Smoky Mountains. They will live in Raleigh, N.C. where Mr. Traywick will be on the faculty at North Carolina State. --Commercial Appeal--. Miss Underhill and her parents lived at Bells for three years, where Bro.
