OBITUARIES

Orion Felix Conlee--Orion Felix Conlee who, since his retirement because of ill health a number of years ago, had devoted practically all of his time to aiding others in solving problems of business or of their private lives, relatives said, died at 7:30 last night at his home, 930 S. Cooper. Mr. Conlee was born in Rutherford, Tenn. Nov. 10, 1898, and had lived in Memphis since he was a boy. He was employed by old Van Vleet Drug Co. for many years before his health failed. He was a World War I veteran and member of the DAV and the American Legion. He was a Methodist. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Jo Sanford Gregory Conlee, his mother, Mrs. W. W. Sil(er?), Toone, Tenn., two brothers Alton P. Conlee, Toone, and Edwin H. Conlee, Memphis, and two sisters, Mrs. J. W. Jones, Memphis, and Mrs. G. H. Stockley, New Orleans. National Funeral Home was in charge. --Sat. Press- Scimitar-- Orion's family lived in Bells when he was a boy and has many friends who were sad to hear of his passing away.

Mrs. Lena Helen Sorrell--Mrs. Lena Helen Sorrell of Friendship died at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Monroe Barker at Elizabeth, Saturday. She was 25. Funeral services were at Bethesda Sunday with Revs. A. I. Saulsbury and Carl Davis officiating. Burial was in Dyersburg at Fairview Cemetery with National Funeral Home and Friendship Funeral Home in charge.

James Robert Cox--Mr. James Robert Cox died Sunday at his home at Coxville. Mr. Cox had suffered from a heart ailment for two years. He was 89 years of age and a life long resident of this section. He was a member of the Methodist Church at Gadsden, and one of the outstanding citizens of the county. He was a leading farmer and landowner of the county and for many years a surveyor, assisting in surveying this county. His hobby was collecting Indian relics. Services were held Monday at the Ronk Funeral Home in Alamo with Revs. R. L. Mobley and Carl Davis officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery, Humboldt, with Ronk Funeral Home in charge. He leaves two sons, Bovie Cox of Gadsden, Byron Cox of Memphis and five daughters, Mrs. Eddie Craddock of Humboldt, Mrs. Alma Mitchell of Gadsden, Mrs. Gracie Naylor of West Memphis, Mrs. Mary Kincaid of Coxville and Mrs. Nell Culp of Bells.

Herman T. Nelson--Funeral services for Herman Taylor Nelson, 25, 324 Hollywood Drive, were held Sunday afternoon at 4 o'clock from the Baptist Church of Gadsden, the Rev. Carl Davis officiating. Burial was in Young Cemetery near Gadsden. Mr. Nelson died at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Nelson, 28 Ingram St., at 9:35 a.m., Saturday after an extended illness. Prior to becoming sick, he was an employee of Rose Furniture Co. He was born in Crockett County, and had made his home in Jackson since 1941. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ruby Jane Motley Nelson; two sons, Joel Ray and Joe Herman Nelson; a daughter, Janice Rose Nelson, all of Jackson, and a sister, Mrs. John Gaydos of Lebanon, Penn. The body will be at Smith Funeral Home until time for the services.

WEDDINGS

Miss Greene and Norman Hogan Wed in Home Ceremony--In a quiet ceremony June 22, at the home of the bride's parents, Miss Jean Marilyn Greene became the bride of Norman Hogan, son of Mr. and Mrs. Porter Hogan of West Memphis, Ark. Charles Williams, minister of the Church of Christ, Trenton, Tenn. officiated. The music was presented by Miss Joyce Smith, vocalist and Mrs. Leon Smith, pianist. Miss Zelda Jenkins of Memphis was the bride's only attendant. Pat Stephenson of Jackson served as best man. Following the ceremony a reception was held. Guests attending were Mrs. Porter Hogan, Miss Arline Hogan, Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Hogan and Mr. and Mrs. George Ruff of West Memphis, Ark., Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Greene, Miss Nan Greene and Mrs. Manie Morgan of Memphis, Mrs. W. E. Justis and Gene B. Bronson of Germantown and Mr. and Mrs. Weldon Hart of Dyersburg. The couple is living in Yorkville where Mr. Hogan is minister of the Church of Christ. --Dyersburg State-Gazette-- (Church and dress descriptions were omitted.)

Betty Joy McDonald, Ted Agee Say Vows--Announcement is made of the marriage of Miss Betty Joy McDonald, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Warren McDonald of Obion, to Ted Agee of Friendship, Tenn. son of Bruce Agee of Memphis. The ceremony was performed June 17 in Corinth, Miss. Attendants were Miss Adelle Coleman of Obion and Herbert Duncan of Friendship. The bride was dressed in a two-piece white summer ensemble trimmed with lace and rhinestones. Her white lace hat also was ornamented with rhinestones. Mrs. Agee is a graduate of Obion High School. Mr. Agee attended Friendship schools and served in the Navy during World War II. He is employed by Southern Bell Telephone Co. at Jackson. After the ceremony, the couple left on a short wedding trip.

OBITUARIES

Mrs. L. M. Culp--Mrs. Nell Culp, 57, wife of L. M. Culp of Bells, Tenn., died Friday night at 8:30 o'clock at her home from leukemia. She had been ill for a year and her death was not unexpected. Mrs. Culp was born at Coxville in this county. She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Robert Cox of Coxville and a niece of Rev. H. A. Butts of Memphis. Mrs. Culp was married to Mr. Culp in 1910. To this union there are six children and thirteen grandchildren. She was a member of the Cross Roads Church of Christ for 42 years. She was known for her devoted work in the Church and Sunday school. She was also an active worker in the civic duties of her community. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 3:30 at the Cross Roads Church, conducted by R. E. Black of Maury City, Don Kester of Bells and Sam Pittman of Nashville, after which the remains were buried in Belleview Cemetery at Bells with Ronk Funeral Home in charge. The largely attended funeral service and the wealth of lovely flowers was a fitting tribute to the memory of this fine Christian character and faithful neighbor and friend. The deceased is survived by her husband; two daughters, Mrs. A. L. Ronk of Alamo and Mrs. B. V. Stephens of Memphis; four sons, Lt. B. S. Culp of Norfolk, Va., Lt. Tony Culp of Fairbanks, Alaska, James Culp and Latney Culp of Alamo; four sisters, Mrs. Etta Craddock and Mrs. Byron Kincaid of Humboldt, Mrs. Edd Mitchell of Gadsden and Mrs. L. O. Naylor of Memphis; two brothers, E. B. Cox of Gadsden and Byron C. Cox of Memphis. Pallbearers were Mrs. Culp's four sons and A. L. Ronk and R. L. Ronk of Alamo.

Mrs. Nannie Williams--Mrs. Nannie Williams, 86, died at her home in Sanford, Fla. on Saturday, June 30. Mrs. Williams was a native of this county, the former Nannie Cox, and died two hours following the death of her brother, Robert Cox of Coxville.

Alamo--Roy Kail and her son, LeRoy, attended the funeral of W. J. Foy in Forrest City, Ark. last Friday. Mr. Foy is Mrs. Kail's half brother and has many friends in West Tennessee. Before moving to Forrest City, Mr. Foy lived in Jackson and was a traveling salesman for the U.S. Tobacco Co. and worked Crockett County for many years.

Alamo--Mr. O. L. Prescott received word on June 30 that Pearl Latham Prescott was killed in a traffic accident in East St. Louis. Funeral services at Mary's Chapel on July 4th near Ripley, Tenn. Bernard Prescott, Mrs. C. E. Tawater, Mrs. Collie Conley, Mr. and Mrs. Morgan Prescott of Memphis, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Castellaw, Mr. and Mrs. Dalton Prescott, Andrew Prescott and granddaughter, and Mr. and Mrs. O. L. Prescott of Alamo attended the funeral. Mrs. Prescott was sister in law of Mr. O. L. and Andrew Prescott and aunt of Frank Latham of Gadsden.

REUNION

Bell Family Reunion--The annual reunion of the descendants of the late Rev. J. A. Bell was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. I. Harwell at Friendship on the Fourth of July and was an enjoyable affair. Those attending were Mr. and Mrs. H. D. Culwell, Mrs. Tommie Moore and children, Mr. Fred Leathers and family of Bells; Mr. Leslie Sims and family and Mrs. W. B. Strong of Alamo; Hunter Bell and family of Friendship; Mr. and Mrs. Grady Littlejohn and Mr. W. P. Littlejohn of Sherman, Miss.; Mr. Carey Littlejohn and family of Starkville, Miss.; Mr. and Mrs. Bob Green and son of Alamo; Mrs. Julian Moser and daughter, Lt. J. H. Littlejohn and family and Mr. and Mrs. Byron Culwell of Memphis; Mr. and Mrs. Clifton Tucker and son of Meridian, Miss.

OBITUARIES

Frank J. Walker--Frank J. Walker, Dyersburg farmer and a World War I veteran died Monday at Kennedy Hospital in Memphis, where he was admitted a week ago. He was 58. He leaves two sons, Miller Walker, Brooklyn, N. Y. and G. F. Walker of Dyersburg.

Robert Franklin Boling--Services for Robert Franklin Boling, who died Saturday morning in a Jackson hospital, were held at the Alamo First Christian Church in Alamo Sunday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. The Rev. John Golden officiated. Burial was in Alamo Cemetery under the direction of Ronk Funeral Home. He was 70. Mr. Boling had been a livestock dealer most of his adult life. He served two terms as Circuit Court Clerk of Crockett County and was active in politics for many years with many friends throughout the county. For the last few years he had operated a store on the Bells Highway. He was a member of the First Christian Church. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Willie Bell Boling; his mother, Mrs. Tom Badgett, Sr. of Alamo; two daughters, Mrs. C. H. Conley and Mrs. Craig Laman, both of Alamo; five half brothers, Tommy Badgett of Memphis, Henry and Guy Badgett of Maury City, Claude Badgett of Friendship and Cecil Badgett of Alamo, and two half sisters, Mrs. Russell Rooks of Maury City and Mrs. Jeff Ross of Los Angeles.

Mr. A. D. Barnes Passes Away--Bells and surrounding community was made sad Friday morning when Mr. Alex Barnes, 78, passed away after an illness of four weeks. "Mr. Alex" was one of the oldest and best loved citizens of Bells and was a faithful and loyal member of the Methodist Church always in his pew on Sunday morning until his last illness. Mr. Barnes had spent many of his years in public life and made warm, personal friends by his sincerity, gentleness, genuine interest in people and unquestioned honesty. The funeral service was held Sunday afternoon at the Methodist Church with his pastor, Rev. Guy Halford in charge, assisted by Revs. J. E. Sharp and Don Kester. Burial followed in Belleview Cemetery with Ronk Funeral Home in charge. Mr. Barnes is survived by his wife, Mrs. Sallie Moore Barnes and son, Eddie Barnes, two sisters, Mrs. A. P. Casey of Bells and Mrs. Blanche Vannoy of Newport News, Va., two brothers, Messrs B. B. Barnes, Sr. and J. R. Barnes.


BIRTHDAY

Birthday Party--Mrs. Robert Stephens entertained with a birthday party Saturday afternoon for her son Danny's 8th birthday. The party was given on the lawn of Mrs. Conyers Horton who assisted with the entertainment. Games and contest were enjoyed and then the children gathered around the table. The birthday cake was the center of attraction. It was a large white cake with pink decorations of rosebuds and "Happy Birthday Danny" and 8 pink candles in attractive holders. As he blew out the candles each wished him many more happy birthdays and all sang Happy Birthday to Danny. Coca Cola and other drinks were served. Candy and bubble gun was passed out. Danny opened his gifts and thanked each friend in a very gracious manner. Those present were Linda Sue Climer, Cooper Stephens, Lacy Earl Stephens, Mark Van Stephens, Joanne Hopper, Eldon Hopper, Perry Arnette Mayfield, Travis Mayfield, Jane Williams, Margaret Nell Morphis, Linda Jaynes, Janie Lee Jaynes, Max Laman, Clark Hill Cowart, Billy Ray Eubanks, Peggy Neal Pickens, Jane Pickens and there were six mothers present.


WEDDING

Elizabeth Young is Wed at Tigrett--Mr. and Mrs. Warner Eugene Young of Tigrett announce the marriage of their daughter, Miss Elizabeth Lougenia Young, to Thomas Spann Farmer of Florence, S.C., son of Mrs. Thomas S. Farmer and the late Mr. Farmer. The ceremony took place on Wednesday at the Tigrett Methodist Church. The bride was graduated from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville where she was a member of Omicron Nu. Last year she was a member of the faculty of Furman University, Greenville, S.C. Mr. Farmer served three years in the Air Force during World War II. He was graduated from Furman University where he was a member of Hand and Torch, and Blue Key honorary fraternities. Since his graduation, he has been director of public relations for Furman University.


REUNION

Speight Reunion--The Speight reunion was held on July 15th at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Dick Sullivan in the Cross Roads Community near the old home. Eight of the fifty-one direct descendants of the late E. H. Speight and wife, were absent, 2 of which were in Japan. Fifty-four enjoyed the picnic lunch served on the lawn. Present were Mrs. Pauline Lewis and son, Mr. Paul Lewis and wife of Sheffield, Ala.; Mr. Dean Speight and daughter of Alamo; Mr. and Mrs. Conley Speight and girls of Memphis; Mr. and Mrs. David E. Speight and children of Covington; Mr. and Mrs. Dick Sullivan, Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Lee Marbury and children of Brownsville; Dr. and Mrs. William Royce Sullivan and girls of Hughes, Ark.; Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Conerly and girls, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Pugh and daughter all of Memphis; Mrs. Effie Cobb of Sheffield, Ala.; Mr. and Mrs. Sam Winburn of Brownsville; Mrs. Roy Chambers and children of Memphis; Mrs. Virginia Speight, Mr. and Mrs. S. H. Ellington of Bells; Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Cobb and family of Providence; Mr. Eddie Speight of Memphis; Miss Ada Vaughn of Union. Friends who called in the afternoon were Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Shivers of Alamo, and Mr. and Mrs. Abner Robertson of Cross Rhodes.

OBITUARIES

Mrs. Ira B. Peal--The Crockett Mills Community was saddened Friday night by the news of the death of Mrs. Ira Peal at the home of her sister, Mrs. Claude T. Blackburn of Humboldt. She had been in St. Mary's Clinic for several weeks and was able to move to the home of her sister. Friends had known for a year that her condition was serious. She was born May 10, 1890, Ivy Robertson, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Edd Robertson of Friendship. She was married September 10, 1911 to Ira B. Peal, owner and operator of the Crockett Mills Telephone Co. She, with her husband, had been operator for more than 29 years and served the community well. She was very active in all church and community affairs. Her generous spirit of giving and jovial disposition made her a favorite with young and old. Funeral services were held on Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the Christian Church at Crockett Mills with J. W. Mayfield, pastor of the Providence Baptist Church officiating. Burial was in Sudbury Cemetery at Friendship with the Friendship Funeral Home in charge. She leaves her husband and one sister, Mrs. Blackburn, one daughter, Mrs. Mary Carew Graf of Galesburg, Ill., and one granddaughter.

Holice Swain--A heart attack suffered while on duty as a service station attendant was fatal Tuesday to Holice Swain of Dyersburg. He was 41. Services were held at 5:00 p.m. Wednesday afternoon in Curry's Funeral Home with the Rev. W. R. Potts, pastor of the First Methodist Church, officiating. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery. Mr. Swain was stricken while at the 555 Service Station where he had been employed several years. He was taken across the street to Baird-Brewer Hospital, where he died in a few minutes. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Sadie Swain, a son, Garland Swain, and a sister, Mrs. Elsie Woods, all of Dyersburg. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Swain and lived on Friendship Route 3 until he moved to Dyersburg a few years ago.

Mrs. Henry N. Nearn-Services for Mrs. Henry Newton Nearn, an early settler of Crockett County, were held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon at Lebanon Methodist Church near Halls. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. Vernon Sisco officiated. Sudbury Funeral Home in charge. Mrs. Nearn died Friday afternoon at the home of a daughter, Mrs. George F. Baker at Halls. She was 91. She was the widow of a well-known Crockett County farmer and landowner. She leaves another daughter, Mrs. Leland Acklin of Henderson, Tenn., a son, Fred Nearn of Halls and two brothers, Dave Heath of Maury City and George Heath of Johnson Grove.

Billie Wayne DeLaney--Billie Wayne DeLaney, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter DeLaney of Friendship, Rt. 1, died Thursday, July 19th at his home. He had been ill since birth December 30th. Funeral services were held on Friday at 2:30 p.m. at the Zion Hill Baptist Church with J. T. Wofford officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery with Friendship Funeral Home in charge.

BIRTHDAY

Birthday Dinner--On Sunday, July 22nd, a birthday dinner was given in honor of Mrs. Ella Robbins and Mrs. Levinia Boyett at the home of Mrs. Robbins on Bells Street. There were 35 guests present. All brought well-filled baskets and dinner was spread on the lawn at 6:30. Those present were Mrs. Ella Robbins, Mr. Oscar Robbins, Mrs. Lucille Wyse, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Delaney and Conrad Delaney, Mr. and Mrs. Francis Robbins and 3 children, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Miller Colvett and children, Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Johnson and Stanley, Mr. and Mrs. W. I. Freeman, Miss Jean Jackson, Mr. and Mrs. Bob Kail, Mr. and Mrs. M. B. Richardson all of Alamo, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Robbins, Larry and Bobby Jean of Humboldt, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Climer and Weldon Hutchinson of Maury City, Mrs. Levinia Boyett and Miss Wava Boyett of Memphis and Bob Summers of Arlington. Everyone enjoyed the occasion very much and left wishing Mrs. Robbins and Mrs. Boyett many more happy birthdays.


WEDDING

Coleman-Camp--Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Coleman of Friendship announce, the marriage of their daughter Ara, to William Camp, son of Mr. and Mrs. Luther Camp of Friendship. The wedding took place Sunday, July 22 at 9:00 a.m. in the home of the bride's aunt, Mrs. Otto Emerson, near Bells. Rev. Carl Davis officiated. The double ring ceremony was used. The bride was dressed in a white dress with white accessories. Her flower was an orchid worn in a shoulder corsage. The bride is a graduate of Crockett Mills High School and West Tennessee Business College of Jackson. She has been employed in Jackson for the past 18 months. The groom attended Friendship High School and served with the army during World War II. After a small reception in the lovely dining room, served by Mrs. Emerson, the young couple left for a Southern wedding trip. Upon return they will make their home in Alamo where the groom is in business. Those attending the wedding were Miss Adelle Coleman of Obion, Miss Ruby Camp of Milan, Mr. Dwane Harber of Friendship, Mrs. Emerson and Mr. Ernest King of Bells.
