The Crockett Times Alamo--Born to Mr. and Mrs. Dalton Jones of Fruitvale, a daughter, on June 22 at Webb-Williamson hospital in Jackson. Mrs. Jones is the former Jewell Richardson. Maury Junction--Born to Mr. and Mrs. J. B. O'Neil, Saturday night, June 26, a daughter. Bells Items--Mr. and Mrs. Jimmie Patton of Washington, D. C., are the parents of a son born Sunday, June 27. Mrs. Patton is the former Sara Lee Sanford, daughter of Mr. R. G. Sanford. The baby has been named George Scott Patton.
Cook-Edmunson--Miss Sue Cook, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Cook of Cairo, and Ralph Edmunson, ministerial student of Abilene Christian College, Abilene, Texas, were united in marriage on June 5th at Corinth, Miss. The bride attended school at Freed-Hardeman College at Henderson and is a very charming young lady. The groom is a young minister of the Church of Christ. "Miss America" weds Doctor--Miss Barbara Walker, "Miss America," and Dr. John Vernon Hummel of Memphis were united in marriage Saturday evening by the Rev. Raymond W. Council, pastor of Springdale Methodist Church, Memphis, where Barbara teaches Sunday school. The Rev. Council is the husband of the former Miss Kathryn Cole, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Cole and is well known in this county. Conley-Black--Mr. and Mrs. Claude Conley of Alamo are announcing the marriage of their daughter, Mary Will to Joseph A. Black, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy W. Black of Bolivar, Tenn. The wedding was solemnized at Corinth, Miss., June 20. The only attendants were Mr. and Mrs. William McKinney of Bolivar. Mrs. Black attended Alamo High School and the University of Tenn. Junior College. Mr. Black was graduated from Central High School at Bolivar and attended the University of Tenn. Jr. College. He is now employed at Black Farm Equipment Co. They are making their home at 301 Jones St. in Bolivar. Maury Junction--Miss Joyce Powell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Johnie Powell and Mr. Cecil Gourley were united in marriage Saturday in Miss. Her sister, Mrs. J. T. Lewis, and Mr. Lewis were their only attendants.
The Crockett Times Richmond C. Jordan--Services for Richmond C. Jordan, farmer of near Bells, who died at the Webb-Williamson Hospital Sunday morning were held at the Cross Roads Church of Christ, Monday at 11 a.m. R. E. Black, minister of the Church of Christ, Maury City, officiated. Burial was in Robertson Cemetery with Ronk Funeral Home in charge. Mr. Jordan died from injuries received in an automobile accident at Bells, Saturday night. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Katie Jordan; two brothers, Charles Jordan of Cross Roads and Roy Jordan of Jonesboro, Ark. Mrs. Jim Quinley--Mrs. Tinnie Carolina Quinley, widow of the late Jim Quinley, died last Thursday at her home in the Crockett Mills neighborhood following a stroke. She was 80 years of age and one of the community's most highly respected citizens. She was born and reared in Crockett County and was a member of the Baptist Church. One son, Willie Quinley, survives. She was the grandmother of Mrs. R. B. Cheatham of Alamo. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at 3:30 at Providence Baptist Church by the Rev. J. T. Barker. Burial was in Providence Cemetery with Ronk Funeral Home in charge. Mrs. Maggie Reasons--Services were held Wednesday at the Center Methodist Church for Mrs. Maggie James Reasons, who died at her home near Humboldt, Monday. Rev. Pafford officiated. Burial was at Center with Ronk Funeral Home in charge. She leaves her husband, J. L. Reasons; four sons, Miller Reasons of Gibson, Tenn., Roy Reasons of Brownsville, Wallace Reasons, Memphis and Billy Reasons, Humboldt; three daughters, Mrs. Lou Norville, Humboldt, Mrs. Mossie Lawtorne, Akron, Ohio, and Mrs. May Brasfield, Jackson; stepchildren, Ira Reasons of Humboldt, Mrs. Williard Pillow of St. Louis, Mo.; brother, Mr. Walter Nicks of Gadsden and sister, Mrs. Carrie Selph, Gadsden. Mrs. Minnie Clay Kenner--Mrs. Minnie Clay Kenner, 63, died Thursday at 4 p.m. at the Doctor's Hospital in Jackson. She was a native of Crockett County and lived in the Center Church community. Three children, Kendall Kenner, Geraldine Kenner and Pansy Kenner survive; three sisters, Mrs. Tom Porter, Mrs. John Grant and Mrs. Homer Puckett and two grandchildren. Many friends are left to mourn her passing. Funeral services at Center Methodist Church Friday at 4 p.m. Burial was at Center with Ronk Funeral Home in charge.
Alamo--Born to Mr. and Mrs. Doyle Emison, a son, who has been named Michael Andrew. Maury Junction--Mr. and Mrs. Leon Castellaw are the parents of an 8-pound girl born July 4th. Maury City--Born to Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Riddick, a son, June 30th in Haywood County Hospital. Coxville--Born to Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Richardson on July 8th, a daughter, at the Haywood County Hospital in Brownsville. The baby has been named Sylvia Diane.
Fifty-third anniversary--Mr. and Mrs. Jim Buford of Bells celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary on May 23rd with a dinner at the home of their grandson, Laurence Waldron of Memphis. Mr. Waldron was also celebrating his 35th birthday. Mr. and Mrs. Buford have two daughters, Mrs. Waldron of Memphis, Mrs. Louise Vencent of Illinois; two sons, Claude Buford of Baton Rouge, La., and Kermit of Bells. They have nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Mr. Buford was 74 on June 1st and Mrs. Buford was70 the 8th of December.
Mitchell-Brown--Mr. and Mrs. Jim Mitchell of Quincy are announcing the marriage of their daughter, Frances to William Carl Brown of Dyersburg, Tenn. The wedding was solemnized at Corinth, Miss., July 3. The couple will make their home in Dyersburg.
The Crockett Times Two Crockett boys--The bodies of two Crockett County boys are among the 4383 American war dead being returned from Europe on the Army Transport, Oglethorpe Victory, the army announced Saturday. They are Pvt. Tommy Redmond of near Nance and W. B. Rogers of Crockett Mills. Roy H. Burnett--Services for Roy Hudson Burnett were held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Friendship Baptist Church with the Rev. W. C. Skinner officiating. Burial was in Sudbury Cemetery with Thompson Funeral Home in charge. Mr. Burnett, who was 49, died of a heart ailment at his home in Friendship. He was a farmer and a member of Barker's Chapel Baptist Church. Mr. Burnett leaves his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Dillard Williams of Montgomery, Ala., and Linda Ann Burnett of Friendship; a son, Loyal Burnett of Friendship; a sister, Mrs. J. T. Trull of Jackson, Tenn.; three brothers, Wesley Burnett of Friendship, Willie Burnett of Tigrett, Tenn., and Porter Burnett of Crockett Mills, Tenn. Mrs. Cornella Nowell--Services for Mrs. Cornella Nowell were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Floyd's Chapel Methodist Church near Maury City, Tenn. Burial was in the church cemetery with Sudbury Funeral Home in charge. Mrs. Nowell, who was 84 and a Methodist, died Monday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. I. W. Goodwin of Memphis. She also leaves three sons, J. C. Nowell of Friendship, W. B. Nowell of Bells and N. T. Nowell of Memphis and two other daughters, Mrs. B. L. Parker of Memphis and Mrs. W. E. Fisher of Friendship. Johnny Cook--Johnny R. Cook, prominent merchant and landowner of the Cook's Store community, died July 1 and was buried on Friday afternoon at Floyd's Chapel, near Maury City, the Rev. C. C. Lewis, officiating. Burial was in the cemetery there with Sudbury Funeral Home in charge. Mr. Cook was 66 and leaves his wife and one son, Jack Cook. Mrs. Hattie Caveness--Funeral services were held Tuesday at the residence of Mrs. J. A. Holley at Humboldt for Mrs. Hattie Caveness, who died Monday afternoon. Rev. J. P. Irion officiated. Burial was at Lessenberry's Chapel with Ronk Funeral Home in charge. She was 69 and was born in Henderson County and had lived in Alamo where she was well known. She was a Baptist. She leaves three daughters, Mrs. Oscar Craiglow of Alamo, Mrs. J. A. Holley of Humboldt and Mrs. Columbus Harris of Milan; three sons, Mr. Ward Caveness of Whilten, Ind., Mr. William Caveness of Milan and Mr. Oner Caveness of Milan.
Margaret Collinsworth engaged to marry James Wayne Griggs--Mr. and Mrs. Warner Moore Collinsworth of Humboldt, Tenn., announce the engagement of their daughter to James Wayne Griggs. Mr. Griggs is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Willie Wayne Griggs of Humboldt and the grandson of the late J. D. Mason of Jackson. Both are members of prominent pioneer Gibson and Crockett County families. Miss Collinsworth attended Humboldt High School and was graduated from Memphis State College, where she was selected Miss Memphis State, appeared among Who's Who in American Universities and Colleges and received the Woman's Association Award during her senior year. She later returned to Memphis State as a member of the summer faculty in the department of chemistry and for the past two years has been a member of the faculty of Humboldt High School. Mr. Griggs attended Humboldt High School and graduated in the School of Agriculture of the University of Tennessee at Knoxville where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. He spent four years with the armed forces, two of which was served in the European Theater of War. He is now associated with his father in cotton ginning and farming near Humboldt. The wedding will take place on July 25 at the First Methodist Church in Humboldt.
Miss Barber and Morris Randle wed in Corinth--Announcement is made today of the marriage of Miss Tennie Marie Barber, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. D. Barber of Dyersburg to Morris Randle, son of Mr. and Mrs. Morris Randle of Alamo. The single ring ceremony was performed on Friday, July 2 in the Baptist parsonage in Corinth, Miss., with the Reverend T. E. Young officiating. The bride was becomingly dressed in a white gabardine suit with white accessories. Their only attendants were Miss Morris Barber of Dyersburg. Miss Mildred Follis, Miss Dawn Poston and Woodfen McLean, all of Alamo. The couple left Saturday night for a trip to the Smoky Mountains. They will make their home in Miami, Fla., where Mr. Randle is connected with Eastern Airlines. ----Dyersburg State-Gazette Janie Ann Burns becomes bride--Mr. and Mrs. Gene Burns of Alamo announce the marriage of their daughter, Janie Ann Burns, to G. Porter Williams, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. G. Porter Williams, 974 Philadelphia. The bride graduated from Alamo High School. Mr. Williams attended Tech High and served two and a half years in the South Pacific with the Navy. The wedding took place Saturday night at Temple Baptist Church. Jane Taylor was maid of honor and Jimmy Williams attended his brother as best man. A reception was held following the wedding at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Homer Reasons, 3544 Cowden, where Miss Burns has lived for the past two years. The bride's table was overlaid with a handmade lace cloth and centered by a three tiered wedding cake surrounded by gardenias. White flowers decorated the reception rooms. For her wedding the bride wore a white suite with white accessories and an orchid corsage. The maid of honor wore a dusty pink dress with a gardenia corsage. ----Press Scimitar
The Crockett Times Mrs. Annie Marie Prather--Funeral services will be held in Pleasant Ridge, Illinois today, Thursday for Mrs. Annie Marie Prather, who died at the home of her son, Mr. E. O. Prather, Sr., in Alamo, Tuesday. Mrs. Prather was born in Illinois in 1860. She had made her home here for the past 6 years but her health had not permitted her to take part in church and community affairs. She leaves her son, Mr. E. O. Prather, Sr., manager of the Roxy Theatre; two daughters, Mrs. Charles Kincaid, Newton, Ill.; Mrs. B. Nichol, Galloway, Ohio; a grandson, Dr. E. O. Prather of Alamo and six other grandchildren; twenty great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren. Ronk Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Clara Ann Vandyke--Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday afternoon at the Pond Creek Methodist Church for Mrs. Clara Ann Vandyke, who died at her home near Alamo Monday. Rev. B. A. Walker officiated. Burial was at Pond Creek with Ronk Funeral Home in charge. She was 67 and a member of the Pond Creek Methodist Church. She leaves her husband, Mr. Elmer Vandyke; one daughter, Mrs. Oid Robertson of Alamo; one son, Mr. Clarence Vandyke of Stockton, Calif.; six brothers, Walter Rice and Archie Rice of Newbern; Grover Rice of Alamo; Albert Rice of Madera, Calif.; Elgie Rice of Lake Tahoe, Calif.; and Charlie Rice of Missouri; two half brothers, Harrison Rice of Alamo and George Rice of St Louis, Mo. Four killed in plane crash--Services for four members of the Lonnie F. Taylor family of near Trenton, who were killed Friday in an airplane crash at Junction City, Ga., were held Sunday afternoon at Plains, Ga. Two others, Mrs. Lorena Ratliff Paradise and Bobby Ratliff were killed in the plane piloted by Mr. Taylor. The plane fell in a field about a mile from Junction City and burned at 7:30 a.m. Friday. Marvin J. Hester, rural storekeeper, reached the scene in a few minutes. The plane was still burning and he said the passengers apparently met instant death. He was able to pull a suitcase from the craft containing clothing and a letter addressed to Mrs. Paradise, through which identification was established. Mrs. Paradise left Americus, Ga., a few miles from the crash Sunday to visit Mrs. Taylor. They were returning when the crash occurred. Mr. Taylor had just opened an airport in Gibson County between Bradford and Greenfield. He was a licensed pilot. Mr. Taylor's brother, Harold Taylor, was killed near the crash location in October 1945 when his motorcycle collided with a truck on the Highway. His sister, Mrs. J. T. Thornton, lives at Dawson, Ga., near the spot where the plane crashed. Mr. Taylor was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lonnie Taylor of Trenton and grandson of the late Mr. and Mrs. Will Taylor of the 15th District of Crockett County. Lieut. Robert White--The body of Lieut. Robert W. White, son of Mrs. Vieva White of Humboldt, arrived in Jackson Monday where services were held. Lieut. White was born and reared in Jackson where he was graduated from Jackson High School and Lambuth College. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in March 1941 and served until March 1942, when he transferred to the American Air Force. He was killed as he attempted to land a fighter plane at an English base, which had been badly shot up on an escort mission over Berlin. Lieut. White was a grandson of the late Pierce Wilson of Alamo. Gordon Worthington--Services were held at the Providence Baptist Church at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon for Mr. Gordon Worthington, prominent farmer and church leader of Crockett Mills. Rev. G. G. Joiner of Parsons officiated. Burial was in Lanier Family Cemetery with Sudbury Funeral Home in charge. Mr. Worthington, who was 78, had been a resident of Crockett Mills for 58 years. He was a deacon in the Baptist Church there. He died at his home Monday. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Lena Boyd Worthington; a son Jim Henry Worthington of Crockett Mills and a daughter, Mrs. Roy Slayton of Crockett Mills; two sisters, Mrs. Joe Thompson and Mrs. Elizabeth Young of Bonham, Texas.
The Crockett Times Mrs. Dean Young--Funeral services were held Thursday, July 22, at the Oak Grove Methodist Church for Mrs. Dean Young of Gadsden. Rev. Jackson of Humboldt officiated. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery under the direction of Ronk Funeral Home. Mrs. Young was 76 and was born in Crockett County and a member of the Methodist Church. She died at Western State Hospital, Wednesday. She leaves one sister, Mrs. Lee Freeman. Aubrey Burse--Services were held Monday at the Maury City Methodist Church for Russell Aubrey Burse, who died at the Brownsville Hospital, Sunday afternoon. Rev. L. A. Smithmier officiated. Burial was in Maury City Cemetery with Ronk Funeral Home in charge. Mr. Burse was born in Crockett County and was a Methodist. He was 49. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Mary Burse, Maury City; two daughters, Mrs. Virginia West, Brownsville; Mrs. Savencia Barton of Brownsville; three sisters, Mrs. Dena Burse, Bogota; Mrs. Mattie Bell Haynes, Gadsden; and Mrs. Lorene Forrester, California; two brothers, Barney Burse, California and Bert Burse of California.
Miss Howell weds M. H. Moore in garden ceremony--Miss Rebekah Howell and Morris H. Moore, son of Mrs. J. F. Moore and the late Mr. Moore, of this city, were united in marriage Saturday evening, July 17, at seven o'clock in a beautiful garden ceremony at the home of the bride's sister, Mrs. Harry Brown and Mr. Brown on East Pine Bluff Street. The Rev. Fred R. Harrison of Camden performed the beautiful ceremony in the presence of the immediate families and a few close friends. The bride entered with her brother, Dan Howell. Mrs. Harry Brown was her sister's only attendant. Harry Brown served the bridegroom as best man. Immediately following the ceremony the guests were invited into the house where an informal reception was held. Mrs. R. V. McCray presided at the punch bowl and Mr. J. M. Young of Memphis, Tenn. served the three tiered wedding cake topped with bride and bridegroom. Others assisting were: Mesdames W. W. Shyrock, Gerald Percival and Miss Kitty Littlefield. The couple left for a wedding trip immediately following the reception and after their return to Malvern they will be at home at 312 School Street. Among the out of town guests were: Mr. and Mrs. Harry Howell of Alamo, Tenn., Rev. and Mrs. Fred R. Harrison of Camden, Dan Howell of Chattanooga, Tenn., Miss Kitty Littlefield of Alamo, Tenn., Mr. and Mrs. John Murry Young of Memphis and Mr. and Mrs. Richard Pence of Conway. ----Malvern, Ark., paper--- (Note: Some descriptive details have been omitted.)
