OBITUARIES


AARON BEACHUM
          Funeral services for Aaron Beechum, 68, who died December 27, at his home in Jackson, Miss., were held at Cox's Chapel on December 29th, A. C. Carpenter officiating.
          Ronk Funeral Home in charge.


RUFUS B. SMITH
          Rufus B. Smith, 54, a former citizen of this county, died suddenly Saturday at his home in Memphis where he had lived for the past seven years.
          Mr. Smith was a carpenter and followed his trade in Memphis. He had many friends in Alamo and community and is survived by his wife, Mildred L. Smith; two daughters, Mrs. Iva Mae Holley of Knoxville, and Mrs. Cordie Lou Mansfield of Alamo; one son, Wayne Dillon of Memphis; two brothers, Dorsey O. Smith of Alamo and Will Smith of Huntingdon; three sisters, Mrs. Sadie Churchwell, Mrs. Andrew Kail and Mrs. Charley Johnson of Alamo.
          The remains were brought to Nance Church of Christ for services Sunday afternoon.


FREDERICK TERRY
          Frederick Terry, 25, of Alamo died Saturday morning at 6:00 o'clock at the Kennedy General Hospital in Memphis. He had been ill for the past few months. Frederick was a veteran of World War II and served in the Pacific theatre.
          He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Buck Terry; four brothers, Roy Henry, Floyd, Lyndois and Bobby, and five sisters, Mrs. Paul Gurley, Mrs. Collin Cozart, Beatrice, Ann, and Lyndy and a host of other relatives and friends.
          Funeral services were held Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Ronk Funeral Home with Rev. J. Paul Palmer and A. C. Carpenter officiating.
          Burial was in Alamo cemetery.


CHARLES CLAYTON COOK
          Charles Clayton Cook, 51, died at his home on Humboldt, Route 8 on December 21. He was a native of East Tennessee. Surviving are his wife; one son, Charles Cook; two daughters, Annie and Mikie Cook; two brothers, John Cook and Layton Cook; three sisters, Mrs. Bulah Raines, Mrs. Myrtle Kernodle, Mrs. Eula David.
          Funeral services were at Cypress Methodist Church by Rev. Carl Davis of Erin. Ronk Funeral Home in charge.


HILL KING
          Services for Hill King, retired farmer, who died at his home on Thursday, December 18th, were held at 11 a.m. Saturday morning at the Baptist Church in Friendship. Rev J. T. Barker and Rev. T. E. Williams, officiating. Burial was in Belle Vernon Cemetery with Thompson Funeral Home in charge. Mr. King was 70 years of age and had been in ill health for five years. He was born in Crockett County and was a member of the Baptist Church.
          He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Vannie Warren King; two sons, Lloyd King of Martin and Warren King of Friendship; two daughters, Mrs. Ida Beaver of Stokes and Mrs. George Ballentine of Friendship and one brother, Joe King of Friendship.


J. A. ROBERTSON
          Services for J. Amos Robertson, well known retired farmer and business man, who died at his home in Friendship Tuesday night at 7:45, were held at 10 Thursday morning at Friendship Baptist Church, the Rev. W. C. Skinner and the Rev. S. B. Morrison officiating. Burial was in Friendship Cemetery under direction of Thompson Funeral Home.
          Mr. Robertson, who was 81, was born in Crockett County, where he farmed until 1922. He then moved to Friendship, where he operated a service station and large potato storage house until his retirement a year ago.
          He and his wife, Mrs. Alice Robertson, managed the local telephone exchange at night.
          Mr. Robertson was a deacon in the Friendship Baptist Church.
          In addition to his wife, he leaves two sons, D. O. Robertson of Memphis, R. O. Robertson of Friendship; two brothers, E. A. Robertson of Newbern and Will Robertson of Arlington, Wash., six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.


WILLIE E. ELMORE
          Willie E. Elmore died suddenly at his home Friday at Maury City. He was 58 and was born in Crockett County. A retired farmer and businessman, from 1940 to 1945 he had charge of a large plantation at Dundee, Miss. He was a veteran of World War I and an active member of the Methodist Church.
          Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon at the Maury City Methodist Church by the Rev. B. O. Clark of Trenton, assisted by Rev. Steadman Bagby of Dyersburg and Rev. E. R. Roach of Maury City and Bro. Lowrance of Maury City. Burial was in Maury City Cemetery.
          He leaves his wife, Mrs. Hollon Goodwin Elmore and six sisters, Mrs. John Etta Wyse of Helena, Ark., Mrs. Nathan Tims of Halls, Mrs. T. R. Robertson of Dyersburg, Mrs. R. H. Carter of Nashville, Mrs. R. L. Eason and Mrs. H. A. Revell of Maury City.


MARRIAGES


HOOKER - EMISON
          Miss Laverne Emison, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Emison, Bells, and W. A. Hooker, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Hooker, Covington, Tenn., were married on December 23 in the Floral Park Methodist Church, Miami, Fla., the Rev. John Paul Davenport officiating.
          The bride wore a suit of sea foam blue with accessories to match. The bride's corsage was imperial orchid.
          Mr. Hooker is associated with Eastern Airlines in Miami.
          Mr. and Mrs. Sam Stevens of Memphis attended the wedding.


CULP - HAGERTY
          Mr. and Mrs. John Hagerty of Brownsville announce the marriage of their daughter, Miss Johnnie Hagerty to Mr. Latney Culp, son of Mr. and Mrs. L. M. Culp of Bells.
          The marriage was solemnized in the home of Bro. Gene Thornton, Church of Christ minister at Corinth, Miss., Wednesday evening, December 24th.
          The attendants were Mrs. Ralph Miller of Dyersburg and Billy Cates of Alamo. Other members of the wedding party included Mr. Ralph Miller of Dyersburg, Miss Martha Ann Smothers, Bells, Miss Virginia Compton of Memphis, Paul Conley, Jr., Miss Lura Mae Conley, Woodfin McLean, Miss Mary Will Conley, all of Alamo; Joe Black, Bolivar and George Chambers of Corinth, Miss. Mr. Chambers is a friend and schoolmate of Mr. Culp and met the wedding party in Corinth.
          The couple will be at home to their friends in Alamo after January 1.

OBITUARIES


ESQ. HENRY BETTIS
          Services for Henry Bettis, who died of pneumonia at the home of his son, Larry Bettis of Hellen's Bluff, were held Wednesday morning at 11:30 at the South Fork Baptist Church, the Rev. T. E. Williams officiating. Burial was in Halls cemetery under the direction of Thompson Funeral Home. Mr. Bettis was 68.
          Born in Crockett County, Mr. Bettis was a prosperous farmer, an Odd Fellow and a member of the Baptist Church. He was a member of the Crockett County Court for 17 years and a leader in all school and civic affairs of his community.
          He leaves his wife, Mrs. Viola Richards Bettis; one son, Larry Bettis; 3 grandchildren; two brothers, J. L. Bettis of Dyersburg and Ruben Bettis of Chicago, Ill.


MRS. ODIE C. SPRAGGINS
          Mrs. Odie C. Spraggins, wife of Odie C. Spraggins, died at a Louisville, Ky. hospital as the result of a fall a few days ago. She was 76.
          Mrs. Spraggins had gone to Louisville to visit her daughter.
          She was born and reared in Crockett County, near Alamo, the daughter of the late Joe and Tabbie Bledsoe. She was a member of the First Methodist Church, Humboldt, and had made her home there for 55 years.
          Beside her husband, she leaves three daughters, Mrs. Verla Ward of Little Rock, Mrs. Perry Brasfield of Louisville and Mrs. Jane Turgon of Humboldt; a son, Howard Spraggins of Cleveland, Ohio, and five sisters, Mrs. J. R. Nethery of Humboldt, Mrs. Claude Thomas of Jackson, Tenn., Mrs. Ira Marrs of Water Valley, Miss., Mrs. James Martin of Comfort, Texas and Miss Gladys Bledsoe of Humboldt.


MRS. JOE S. VAUGHN
          Services for Mrs. Joe S. Vaughn were held at the Lebanon Methodist Church at 11 a.m. Sunday morning. The Rev. W. T. M. Jones of Gates officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery with Sudbury Funeral Home in charge. She was 82.
          Mrs. Vaughn died at her home Friday morning. She was born in Crockett County and was the wife of Joe S. Vaughn, retired farmer. She was a member of a pioneer Crockett County family and a member of the Lebanon Methodist Church.
          In addition to her husband, she leaves three sons, Lyle Vaughn of Halls, Asa Vaughn, employed by post office at Halls, and Bernard Vaughn, Lafayette, La.; one daughter, Miss Ada Vaughn, Halls; a brother, Asa Dean of Crockett Mills; a sister, Mrs. Nora White of Halls.


MRS. FANNIE CHILDRESS
          Services for Mrs. Fannie Childress, who died Thursday at the home of her brother, B. A. Harber, at Bethesda, were held Friday afternoon with the Rev. Oakley Woodside and the Rev. E. O. White officiating. Burial was in the Bethesda Cemetery. She was 81.
          Mrs. Childress was born in Crockett County and was the widow of J. C. Childress. She was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. She leaves another brother, Willis Harber of Memphis.
          Thompson Funeral Home in charge.


MRS. W. A. ADAMS
          Mrs. W. A. Adams, member of a pioneer Crockett County family and widow of Will Adams, widely known farmer and landowner, died at 12:30 p.m. Monday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Charles C. Brown in Nashville. She was 75.
          Mrs. Adams was born in Crockett County and spent most of her life there. She was a longtime member of Lebanon Methodist Church near Halls.
          She leaves two sons, Graham Adams, Halls and Louis Adams, Gainesville, Texas; two daughters, Mrs. Brown and Miss Willie Belle Adams, Holdenville, Okla., and her sister, Mrs. E. E. Jordan, Maury City, Tenn.
          Services were at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Lebanon Methodist Church with Rev. C. C. Lewis and Rev. W. T. M. Jones officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Sudbury Funeral Home in charge.

ALAMO

          Born to Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Kail on Sunday, January 4th at Haywood County Hospital, an 8 1/2 pound son who has been given the name of Robert Leroy Kail, Jr.


GOLDEN - WILLIAMS
          Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Williams of Friendship announce the marriage of their daughter, Miss Dorothy Williams, to Mr. Milton Golden, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Golden, Jr. of Friendship, December 13, 1947 at Corinth, Miss.
          Mrs. Golden is a graduate of Friendship High School and is well known around Friendship.
          Mr. Golden is a graduate of Friendship High School and is employed at Lewis Department Store in Memphis.
          Their only attendants were Mr. James Lloyd Williams, brother of the bride and Miss Jeanne Smith.
          The couple will make their home in Memphis.


MULLINS - PEELER VOWS EXCHANGED AT STANTON
          Miss Regina Peeler daughter, of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Peeler, Sr. of Stanton, became the bride of Billy Mullins, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Mullins of Bells, in a ceremony Dec. 23 at the home of her parents. The Rev. R. K. Bennett, pastor of the Stanton Baptist Church, officiated.
          The bride's nephews, George Peeler of Stanton and Al Ferguson of Memphis lighted the tapers. Miss Ida Bennett, pianist, presented nuptial music.
          The bride was given in marriage by her father and maid of honor was Miss Sara Nell Stuart. Lawrence Farrow of Bells was best man.
          Mr. and Mrs. Peeler entertained with a reception immediately following the ceremony. They were assisted by their daughters Mrs. Allen Ferguson and Mrs. Joe Morgan of Memphis, Miss Ann Durham and Miss. Bette Dancy.
          The couple will live in Cookeville, Tenn., where the bridegroom is a student at Tennessee Polytechnic Institute.


VIA - MORTON
          Mr. and Mrs. Horace Morton of Friendship announce the marriage of their daughter, Louise to O'Neal Via, son of Mrs. Annie Randolph of Alamo.
          The quiet but impressive double ring ceremony was solemnized in the home of Rev. J. A. Thornton, Church of Christ minister of Corinth, Miss., on Sunday, January 4 at 2 o'clock. Their only attendants were Mr. Frank Kail and Miss Annette Taylor.
          The bride was dressed in a lovely pale blue gabardine suit with black accessories. Her shoulder corsage was of white carnations.
          Mrs. Via is a graduate of Hamlett-Robertson High School in Crockett Mill. Mr. Via is a veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific area for 33 months.
          After a brief honeymoon, the couple will make their home near Alamo.


HARPER - BADGETT
          Mr. and Mrs. K. E. Harper of Alamo announce the marriage of their daughter, Miss Dorothy Harper to James Badgett, son of Mr. and Mrs. Claude Badgett of Friendship on December 24, 1947 at Corinth, Miss. The bride was dressed in a navy blue suit with red accessories. Their attendant was Mr. Roy Clark of Alamo.
          They will make their home in Memphis.


REED - BADGETT
          Miss Alma Jean Reed, daughter of Mr. Marshall Reed of Friendship and Harold G. Badgett, son of Mr. and Mrs. Claude Badgett of Friendship were married December 13, 1947 at Hernando, Miss.
          The attendants were Miss Mary Alice Badgett of Friendship, Mr. Joe Badgett, Miss Mary Alice Littlejohn and Mr. Jimmy Thompson all of Memphis.
          The bride was dressed in a blue dress with brown accessories and wore a shoulder corsage of white gardenias. The couple will make their home in Memphis.


HOPPER - WORRELL
          Miss Pauline (Polly) Worrell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Worrell of Bells and Mr. Billy Hopper, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Billy Hopper, Sr. of Alamo were married on January 2 at Corinth, Miss., in the home of Rev. A. B. Hill, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Corinth.
          Mrs. Hopper is a graduate of Bells High School and of Memphis Commercial School and worked several months at the Naval Base in Millington.
          Mr. Hopper is a graduate of Alamo High School and served with the Navy in the Pacific during World War II.
          They will resume their studies at the University of Tennessee at Martin where both are in their sophomore years.

OBITUARIES


HALLS FARMER DIES ON 82nd BIRTHDAY
          Just a week after the death of his wife and on his 82nd birthday, Joe S. Vaughn, widely known retired Crockett County farmer, died at 8:45 Friday night at his home in Halls.
          Born in Crockett County, Mr. Vaughn farmed there all his life until his retirement two years ago when he moved to Halls. He was a former school board member and belonged to the Woodmen of the World and Lebanon Methodist Church.
          He leaves three sons, B. D. Vaughn, Lafayette, La., Asa Vaughn, employee of the Halls post office and J. L. Vaughn of Halls; his daughter, Mrs. Ada Vaughn, Halls and his brother, Ike Vaughn, Maury City.
          Services at 11 a.m. at Lebanon Methodist Church near Halls, Rev. W. T. M. Jones officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Sudbury Funeral Home in charge.


MRS. LUCY ANN BATES CLIMER
          Services for Mrs. Lucy Bates Climer, who died at her home in Friendship, Sunday, January 11 at 6:39 p.m. were held January 13 at 1:30 p.m. at Floyd's Chapel. Burial was in Floyd's Chapel Cemetery with Rev. E. R. Roach as the officiating minister. Mrs. Climer was 68.
          She is survived by her children; Mrs. Mary Etta Turnage, Jonesboro, Ark., Vera Ann Sturdivant, Friendship, Columbus W. Climer, Friendship, Ruben Climer, Halls, Mrs. Rosa Bell Taber, Newbern and 19 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
          Ronk Funeral Home in charge of the services.


RAY McLEOD
          News reaches here of the death of Mr. Ray McLeod on December 26th at his home in Puente, Calif.
          Mr. McLeod is survived by his wife, Mrs. Della Taylor McLeod, a native of this county. She taught school in the county for a number of years. Mrs. McLeod and husband visited friends and relatives here last year.


MRS. SARAH HODGE
          Services for Mrs. Sarah Hodge, who died at her home in Gadsden, Monday, January 12 at 4:30 a.m. were held January 13 at 1:30 p.m. at Gadsden Baptist Church. Burial was in Pond Creek Cemetery with Ronk Funeral Home in charge. Mrs. Hodge was 68.
          She was the wife of T. E. Hodge of Gadsden, who survives.
          She is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Gracie Williams, Mrs. Effie Acred of Dyersburg; Mrs. Chesley Byrd, Gadsden; Mrs. Leon Puckett, Memphis and two brothers, George Robbins and John Wess Robbins.


WALTER N. JACKSON
          Services for Walter Nathaniel Jackson, well-known Madison County farmer who died at his home in the Providence community Sunday morning were held at Providence Church at 1 p.m. Monday. Burial was in Providence Cemetery under direction of Goosmann Funeral Home. Mr. Jackson was 81.
          He leaves his wife, Mrs. Iva Mae Sweeney Jackson; four sons, William and Lynn Jackson of Providence; Erbon O. Jackson of Los Angeles and Edward C. Jackson of Ashland, Miss.; a daughter Mrs. Etoile Onsani of Detroit; three grandchildren, one great grandchild and one great great grandchild.


H. D. RAINES
          Mr. H. D. Raines passed away Friday morning at the Baptist Hospital, Memphis, where he had been a patient since the 28th of December. Mr. Raines was a member of the Methodist Church and as long as his health permitted, was a loyal member of the Cross Roads Methodist Church. The funeral was held at the church Sunday afternoon by the pastor, Rev. Walker assisted by a former pastor, Rev. W. J. Cooley and was attended by a large crowd of relatives and friends. He was buried in Belleview Cemetery with the Goosmann Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Alta Raines, five sons and a daughter, three brothers and three sisters and several grandchildren.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Paschall a 6-pound daughter at the Brownsville Hospital January 12th.


BALL --- SPENCE WEDDING
          The wedding of Miss Jean Ball to William G. Spence is announced today by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Ball of Curve. The wedding was at Sardis, Miss. on January 10, 1948 with the Rev. A. C. Parks officiating. For the wedding Miss Ball wore a Maurice Petner suit of Forstmann gabardine with black accessories and an orchid corsage. Mr. Spence is the son of Mrs. Bertie Spence and the late Dr. Will Spence of Halls.
          Miss Ball was graduated from Ripley High School where she was a member of the Sub. Deb. Club. Later she attended Union University of Jackson where she was a member of the Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority, the Footlights Club and the Enonion Literary Society.
          Mr. Spence was graduated from Halls High School. He attended Memphis State College and the University of Tenn. At Knoxville, he was a member of the Phi Lambda Delta Fraternity. During the war he served two years overseas with the Medical Corps.
          Immediately after the ceremony they left for trip to points in Florida.


CARTER --- BUTNER
          Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Butner of Maury City announce the marriage of their daughter, Miss Marjorie Rose Butner to James Fulton Carter, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Carter, Sr. of Maury City.
          The wedding was solemnized Saturday evening, December 20th in the home of Rev. Pitt Woodruff in Memphis. Those attending the wedding party were Mr. and Mrs. Bernice Bolding and Mr. and Mr. and Mrs. Ray Carter, Jr. of Memphis.           The couple will make their home in Memphis at 835 Dickinson.


DUNCAN --- BRASFIELD
          Mr. and Mrs. O. H. Duncan of Alamo announce the marriage of their daughter, Miss Nell Duncan, to Sgt. James L. Brasfield, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. T. Brasfield of Alamo. They were married in a double ring ceremony, January 3, 1948 at Corinth, Miss., by Harvey Hall. After the ceremony they returned to Jackson and spent a short honeymoon there.
          Mrs. Brasfield is a graduate of Hamlett-Robertson High School and was well known by everyone.
          Sgt. Brasfield attended Friendship High School and has served 16 months in the army, 9 of them being served in Korea.
          Sgt. Brasfield will return to Camp Stoneman, Calif., the 23rd of January.


DOUBLE WEDDING HELD ON MONDAY, DECEMBER 29TH
          A double wedding of widespread interest occurred Monday morning at ten thirty at Sacred Heart Catholic church, Humboldt, when Miss Robbie Louise Callan became the bride of Damon L. Crabtree and Miss Virginia Fay Callan became the bride of Harold L. Copher. The brides are the attractive daughters of Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Callan of Humboldt. Mr. Crabtree is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Crabtree of Bells and Mr. Copher is the son of Mr. And Mrs. Lloyd Copher, also of Bells.
          Both young men were graduates of Bells High School in 1944.
          The main altar and side altar of the church was decorated for the ceremony in Christmas greenery and poinsettias and burning white tapers in gold candelabra cast a soft glow over the wedding scene.
          Father Charles F. Schrimph performed the double ring ceremony in the presence of the immediate families and close friends.
          Nuptial music was presented by Miss Laura Foltz.
          The brides wore winter white wool suites of identical design with black and white accessories and shoulder corsages of red roses. They carried white Prayer books each topped with red roses and showers of white satin ribbon.
          Miss Eva Jean Callan, sister of the brides and Donovan H. Long were the only attendants. Miss Callan was attired in a light blue wool suit with black accessories. Her hat was of the same shade of blue with matching ostrich trim and her flowers were white carnations.
          Mrs. Crabtree was employed by the Southern Bell Telephone Company and Mrs. Copher was connected with St. Mary's Hospital.
          Both Mr. Crabtree and Mr. Copher are veterans of World War II, each with two years overseas service.
          The young couples will make their home in Memphis.


WARD --- PATTERSON
          Miss Eleanor Frances Patterson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Otha Patterson of Bells, became the bride of James Winfred Ward, son of Mr. Henry Ward of Cooter, Mo., in a ceremony January 9 at the First Christian Church in Bells.
          Their only attendants were Miss Bettye June Patterson and Mr. Carey Ward, brother of the groom.
          Both Mr. and Mrs. Ward are graduates of Bells High School. Mrs. Ward represented Bells as a Maid in the Strawberry Festival in 1947.
          They will make their home near Bells.

OBITUARIES


REX FISHER
          Funeral services for Rex Fisher, 15-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Johnie Fisher were held Saturday afternoon at Floyd's Chapel. Rex was born and reared in Crockett County and was living, at the time of his death, in the Chestnut Bluff community, where he possessed many friends. He was a freshman in Friendship High School.
          He is survived by his parents; four brothers, James, Dan, Doy and Leroy; six sisters, Sue, Dorris, Jo Ann, Baby Nell, Cynthia and Ava Janett.
          Prof. Burke and Bro. Edgar Williams conducted the service. Pallbearers were Stacy Bailey, Bubber Cherry, Joe Health, Wilbur Privett, Fred Privett, Jr. and Charles Richardson.
          Sudbury Funeral Home of Halls in charge.


MRS. WILLIAM J. HUNT DIES
          Mrs. William J. Hunt, wife of a well-known Memphis dentist, died at 6:40 last night at her home at 1910 Lyndale, following a long illness. She was 73.
          Mrs. Hunt was born in Bells, Tenn., and lived in Dyer and Trenton, Tenn., before her marriage to Dr. Hunt at Dyer, August 24, 1898. She was the daughter of the late John E. and Julia Crichlow Gregory.
          Following her marriage, she and Dr. Hunt moved to Memphis. Mrs. Hunt was educated at public schools in Trenton and attended college in Hopkinsville, Ky., and later Belmont College in Nashville. She was a member of the First Methodist Church.
          In addition to her husband she leaves a foster son, Joseph C. Whitaker, and a sister, Mrs. Church Buck of Memphis. J. W. Norris Funeral Home in charge.


JOHN HENRY PERRY
          John Henry Perry, who was born in Bells, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Natalie Lee in Jackson. He was 84 years old. Funeral services were January 19 at 2 p.m. at the home of Mrs. Lee in Jackson with Rev. J. E. Sharp officiating. Burial was in Hollywood Cemetery in Jackson with Ronk's Funeral Home in charge.
          He is survived by two sons, Gilbert Perry, Bells; Alex Perry of Brazil and two daughters, Mrs. Natalie Lee of Jackson and Mrs. Nettie Woodall, Nashville.


MRS. ELLA TAYLOR COLVETT
          Services for Mrs. Ella Taylor Colvett who died at her home Sunday, January 18 at 6:45 p.m., were held at the Goosmann Funeral Home Monday afternoon, the Rev. Tom Webb of Milan officiating. Rev. Webb is a cousin of the deceased. She was 72 years old and a member of the Primitive Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband, J. W. Colvett, two sons, Ollie Colvett of the Cross Roads community and Aubrey Colvett of Memphis and a sister, Mrs. J. J. M. Clements and six grandchildren. Goosmann Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.


MRS. SARAH JANE HODGE
          Mrs. Sarah Jane (Sally) Hodge, age 68, passed away at her home in Gadsden, Monday, January 12 of a heart attack.
          The funeral was held January 13 at the Gadsden Baptist Church at 1:30 p.m. with Rev. B. A. Walker and Rev. Carl Davis officiating. Burial followed in the Pond Creek Cemetery with Ronk Funeral Home in charge.
          Mrs. Hodge was born and reared in Crockett County, the daughter of the late Sol and Molly Copher Robbins.
          She united with the Providence Baptist Church in early life. She was a consecrated Christian and was loved and held in the highest esteem by all who knew her.
          She is survived by her husband, Thomas Edgar Hodge and four children. They are Mrs. Sammie Acred of Dyersburg, Mrs. Leon Puckett of Memphis, Mrs. Chesley Byrd of the Mason Grove community and Mrs. Herman Williamson of Dyersburg. She is also survived by eleven grandchildren, a sister, Mrs. Bob Kail of Alamo, and two brothers, John Wess Robbins of Alamo and George Robbins of Pasadena, Calif.
          The pallbearers were three nephews and three grandson-in-law, Charles Carman, William Hodge, Raymond Hodge, Edward Jones, Ray Parker and Halbert Atkinson.

          Born to Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Norville on January 16 at Webb-Williamson Hospital an 8 pound 2 oz. son who has been given the name of Jere Wayne.


COXVILLE

          Born to Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Porter at St. Mary's hospital on January 18th, a son. He has been named James Winfield.


WILLIAMS --- MOOTTS
          Mrs. Geneva Williams and Mr. Herbert Hoover Mootts were married Sunday, December 28th at 4 p.m. The Rev. Ellis Andrews read the vows in a simple double ring ceremony before the altar of the Capitol Heights Methodist Church. Only members of the bride and groom's immediate family witnessed the ceremony.
          Geneva is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joe N. Williams of Friendship. Herbert is the son of Mrs. R. Mootts of Clanton, Ala. Mrs. James McCarthy, sister of the bride served as maid of honor and Paul Mootts, brother of the groom, served as best man.
          After a short wedding trip they will reside in Montgomery, Ala. where they are both employed.


GIARIDINO --- WILLIAMS
          Miss Martha Williams and Mr. Louis Giaridino were married on Sunday, January 18th at St. Mary's Church in Memphis.
          Mrs. Giaridino is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Williams, a graduate of Gadsden High School and for sometime has been employed in Memphis.
          Mr. Giaridino operates his own business in Memphis where the couple will make their home.

OBITUARIES


MRS. MINNIE DENWIDDIE
          Funeral services for Mrs. Minnie Denwiddie who died at the home of Mrs. J. G. Tucker, January 22 at 5:20 a.m., were held at Ronk's Funeral Home on January 23 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Frank Perry as the officiating minister. Mrs. Denwiddie was 68. Burial was at Pond Creek Cemetery with Ronk's Funeral Home in charge. She was a member of the Cairo Church of Christ.


J. B. McCUTCHEON
          J. B. (Barney) McCutcheon, 83, died on Wednesday of last week at the home of his niece, Mrs. George Wight in Miami, Fla., where he was spending the winter. Mr. McCutcheon had spent much time in the home of his niece since his health failed several years ago.
          The remains were brought to Alamo and funeral services held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 at the Baptist Church. Rev. E. L. Robinson of Jackson, preaching the funeral sermon. Assisting in the services were the pastor Rev J. P. Irion of Bells and Rev J. P. Palmer of Alamo. Mr. McCutcheon was a devout member of the Methodist Church and when health permitted was always found attending services and taking an active part in the work of the church.
          He was one the community's best-loved citizens.
          He was preceded in death a few years ago by his wife, Mrs. Drucilla McCutcheon. Mrs. Wight is the only near relative surviving.
          He was engaged in business in Alamo for many years and had farming interests, which he looked after when he retired from business.
          Burial was in Alamo cemetery with Thompson Funeral Home in charge.

          Born to Mr. and Mrs. Coy Branch at Haywood County Hospital, a son on January 26.


JOLLY --- WARD
          Mr. and Mrs. Oran L. Hill of Bells announce the marriage of their daughter, Rosa Margaret Jolly to Doyle Ward, son of Mr. and Mrs. T. C. Ward, also of Bells.
          The ceremony was solemnized Tuesday, January 20th in Hernando, Miss., at the home of the Baptist minister, in the presence of relatives. Their attendants were Mrs. James Curtis of Memphis and Mrs. Willard Hill of Bells, aunt and uncle of the bride. For her wedding, Mrs. Ward wore an aqua blue dress with black accessories and a gardenia corsage.
          The couple will reside in Memphis where the groom is employed.
