OBITUARIES

Mrs. Ela Galli--Services for Mrs. Ela Galli were held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday at the grave in Sudbury Cemetery. Earl Fly, minister of the Church of Christ at Friendship, officiated. Mrs. Galli died unexpectedly Tuesday night at the home of her brother, Warren Day of Fowlkes. Mrs. Galli trained for the nursing profession at Crook's Sanitarium in Jackson and followed her profession for a number of years. She leaves her mother and stepfather, Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Day of Tigrett; two brothers, Page Day, Beersheba Springs, Tenn. and Warren Day of Fowlkes; one sister, Mrs. Joe Jester of Memphis; also two sons survive, John Lawson Page and Thomas Lyndell Page. Sudbury Funeral Home in charge.

Mrs. Addie Neal Vaughan--Mrs. Addie Neal Vaughan, 91, died in Alamo at 12:30 o'clock Saturday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. M. W. Via. Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday from the Alamo Church of Christ of which she was a member. A. C. Carpenter of Memphis and E. V. Boone of Alamo officiated. Burial, with Casey Funeral Home of Henderson in charge, was in the Alamo Cemetery. Pallbearers were Jess Penny, James Hicks, O'Neal Via, Dennis Vaughan, Jerry Via, and Billy Joe Vaughan. In addition to Mrs. Via, with whom she lived, Mrs. Vaughan is survived by her daughters, Mrs. Joe Randolph of Alamo and Mrs. Bob Hicks of St. Louis, Mo.; three sons Doss and Andrew Vaughan of Alamo and John Vaughan of Kenton, Tenn., 14 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. Mrs. Vaughan was born in Carroll County. She moved to Crockett County as a child and had lived there the rest of her life. She was the widow of G. R. Vaughan, Crockett County landowner and farmer. He died in 1923.

Mrs. Mary E. Benson--Funeral services will be held this afternoon at 2:00 at the Nance Church of Christ for Mrs. Mary E. Benson, who died at her home in Gadsden Wednesday at 9:00 a.m. Ernest Boone, minister of the Alamo Church of Christ will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery with Ronk Funeral Home in charge. Mrs. Benson was born December 25th, 1870. She was a member of the Church of Christ. She leaves her husband, J. P. Benson of Gadsden and six children by a former marriage: Coleman Johnson, Jack Johnson, Bill Johnson, Mike Johnson, Dene Johnson and Mrs. Mandy Haynes, two sisters, three brothers and 11 grandchildren.

Edd J. Riddick--Edd J. Riddick, president of the Planters Bank of Maury City since 1941 died Tuesday. He was 80. Services will be held at the Maury City Methodist Church at 2:00 today, Thursday, with the Rev. H. L. Lax officiating, assisted by the Rev. L. A. Smithmier. Burial will be in the Forest Chapel Church Cemetery. Mr. Riddick had lived in Maury City all his life. In his early life he was a farmer. He had been a stockholder and a member of the Board of Directors of the bank since it was organized in 1911. Mr. Riddick was a member of the Maury City Methodist Church. He leaves a sister, Mr. J. H. Reddick of Maury City and two brothers, T. R. Riddick of Humboldt and J. D. Riddick of Maury City.

Mrs. R. E. Toy--Mrs. Arzie Matilda Toy, wife of R. E. Toy, died in Bells Sunday. She resided on Gadsden, Rt. 1. She was 49 years of age. Services were held Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. at Mt. Olive, Rev. George Pressler officiating. Burial was in Salem Cemetery with Ronk Funeral Home in charge. She leaves her husband, four children, J. C. Toy of Union City, Mrs. Barton Selph of Bells, Mrs. Violet Harden of Alamo and Johnnie Bob Toy of Gadsden; her mother, Mrs. J. A. Robertson of Gadsden; three brothers, Walter Robertson of Gadsden, D. C. Robertson of Humboldt and George Robertson of Tulsa, Okla.; two sisters, Mrs. Walter Nicks of Gadsden and Mrs. Demsey Davis of Nashville.

Sammie Joseph Chambers--Sammie Joseph Chambers, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Chambers of Bells died Tuesday, November 27, aged 12 days. He is survived by his parents and a sister, Donna Faye. Services were held at the First Christian Church in Bells Nov. 18 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. E. B. Motley officiating. Burial was in Belleview Cemetery with Ronk Funeral Home in charge.


BIRTH

Alamo--Mr. and Mrs. James Ozment are the parents of a nine-pound girl, born December 1st.


ENGAGEMENT

Miss Argrett Privett to be Bride Dec. 30--Mr. and Mrs. Tommy P. Privett of Alamo announce the engagement of their daughter, Miss Argrett Laverne Privett to Daniel J. Lewing, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred D. Lewing of 871 Barbara Drive. The bride-elect is the granddaughter of Mrs. Henry N. Privett and the late Mr. Privett and of Mrs. R. E. Cathey and the late Mr. Cathey, all of Alamo. Miss Privett was graduated from Alamo High School. Mr. Lewing is the grandson of Mrs. Fred Lewing and the late Mr. Lewing of Cincinnati and Los Angeles and the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Mattmiller of Gillett, Ark. and Stuttgart, Ark. Mr. Lewing was graduated from Central High School in Memphis and is a senior at Memphis State College, where he is majoring in business administration. He is a member of the Phi Sigma Chi Fraternity and is associated with McGregor's Inc. The wedding will take place on Dec. 30. --Commercial Appeal.


MARRIAGES

Turner - Bridger--Miss June Turner and Mr. Billy Bridger surprised their many friends on November 27 by going to Hernando, Miss. and getting married. Their only attendant was Miss Betty Worrell. Mrs. Bridger is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ream Turner of Alamo and was a student of Alamo High School. Mr. Bridger is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Cal Bridger of Bells. The couple is at home in Memphis where he is employed.

Champion - Turner--All Saints Church of Tucson, Ariz. was the scene last Saturday at 3:00 p.m. of the informal wedding of Marie K. Champion and Robert Riley Turner with Msgr. Arthur Grammer performing the double ring ceremony. The bride is the daughter of Mrs. Maude Champion of 4203 Speedway. Mr. Turner is the son of Mrs. Eunice Turner of Alamo. Mrs. Bernie McNamara was matron of honor. Mr. Edwin R. Hansen served as best man. A reception for families and friends followed the ceremony. The couple left on a wedding trip to Phoenix, Arizona. Out of town guests were Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Smith and children of Phoenix and the bride's brother, Raymond Champion of Redwood City, Calif.

Daniel - Warren Vows Pledged--Mrs. Theodore Frances Warren of Bells, Tenn., route three, is today announcing the marriage of her daughter, Jane, to Mr. William Frank Daniel. The wedding occurred on November 10, 1951. Mr. and Mrs. Daniel will be at home on the Poplar Corner Road.

Brooks - Kirkpatrick--Mr. and Mrs. Bill Brooks of Bells announce the recent marriage of their daughter, June, to Joseph Kirkpatrick, son of Mrs. Vera Kirkpatrick of Brownsville. The wedding occurred on Sunday, October 21, at Corinth, Miss., in the home of Rev. D. L. Hill, pastor of the First Baptist Church, who read the ceremony. June was attired in a honey colored suit with navy accessories and a large white orchid. Mr. and Mrs. Brooks served their daughter as matron of honor and best man. The groom had just returned from serving 9 months of combat with the 2nd Div., in the Korean War. They are now at home with the bride's parents.

OBITUARIES

Three Children Burned to Death--The home of Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Latham of near East Prairie, Mo., was destroyed by fire recently when a four-year-old son started a fire with coal oil. The stove exploded. One child aged one year, and one aged 2 years, perished in the flames. The oldest child, Rebo, who started the fire, died last week in a hospital in Cairo, Ill. The mother, who is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Edwards of Alamo, was seriously injured and is now in a hospital in Cairo. The father received only slight injuries. The Latham family formerly lived in this county.

A Correction--In the write up of the death of the children of Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Latham of near East Prairie, Mo., we stated that the children were aged one, two and four. They were aged three, five and twelve, and the oldest boy, Bobby, was the one who started the fire with coal oil which caused an explosion of the stove and destroyed the house, resulting in the death of the three children and serious injuries to the mother, who is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Edwards of Alamo. The story was printed as related to us by the grandfather. The correction is made at the request of the father, Hubert Latham, who formerly lived in this county. Robert F. Love--Services for Robert F. Love, Crockett County farmer, were held Thursday morning at 10:30 at South Fork Baptist Church near Halls. The Rev. Edgar Williams, minister, officiated. Burial was in Halls Cemetery with Sudbury Funeral Home in charge. Mr. Love died early Tuesday night at Baird-Brewer Hospital in Dyersburg after an illness of three weeks. He was 63. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Almeda Kesterson Love; one son, Jewell Love of Halls; one daughter, Mrs. Ellis Gilliland of Halls; three brothers, Claude Love of El Dorado, Ark., Bud Love of El Dorado, Charley Love of Bolivar and one sister, Mrs. Pete Reynolds of Halls.

Marion Augustus Hamilton--Marion Augustus Hamilton, aged 80, died at his home near Alamo Friday. He was a native of Alabama but had lived in this county the greater part of his life. He was a highly respected citizen and had many friends. He is survived by one son, James E. Hamilton. Funeral services were held Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at Center Church with the Rev. George Pressler officiating. Burial was in Center Cemetery with Ronk Funeral Home in charge.


ENGAGEMENT

Miss Marshallene Simmons--Mr. and Mrs. John Marshall Simmons of Harrisburg, Ark., announce the betrothal of their daughter, Miss Marshallene Simmons to Aldon Gewain Prescott of Alamo, Tenn. Miss Simmons was graduated from State Teachers' College of Conway, Ark., with a B.S.F. degree in Home Economics. She was a member of the Alpha Sigma Alpha Sorority. Since graduation last January she has been teaching in the Annie Camp Jr. High School of Jonesboro, Ark. She is a member of the Beta Sigma Phi business sorority of Jonesboro. Mr. Prescott attended the University of Tennessee and was graduated with a B.S. degree in Agricultural Engineering. He is now connected with the Soil Conservation Service of Marion, Ark. The wedding will be solemnized January 27 at the First Methodist Church at Harrisburg, Ark.

OBITUARIES

Mrs. Ola Tatum--Word was received here of the death of Mrs. Ola Brasfield Tatum, who died in a St. Louis hospital Sunday night where she had been a patient for six weeks. She had been ill of a heart ailment for a year. She was 75, daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. Sol Brasfield of near Alamo and the wife of the late Ferd Tatum. She leaves three daughters, Posie and Dorothy of St. Louis and Cordie of Florida and one son, Sollie Tatum of St. Louis; one grandson, Dr. Marvin Tatum Percell of St. Louis; one sister, Annie Brasfield of Los Angeles, Calif., and two brothers, Lyle and Albert Brasfield of Texas.

Carl Latham--Funeral services were held on Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. at the Friendship Baptist Church for Carl Latham who died at the home of his sister, Mrs. R. G. Brasfield in Friendship Sunday night. Ben Hill of Friendship Baptist Church officiated. Burial was in Sudbury Cemetery with Sudbury Funeral Home in charge. He was 60 and a member of the Friendship Baptist Church. He was a life long citizen of Crockett County and had many friends. He leaves his mother, Mrs. Alice Latham of Friendship; three daughters, Mrs. Evelyn Nichols of Memphis, Mrs. Homer Rodgers of Maury City and Mrs. Woodrow Young of Alamo; one brother, Lexton Latham of Halls; three sisters, Mrs. R. L. Ward of Maury City, Mrs. B. W. Byrum of Brownsville and Mrs. Brasfield.

Mrs. Sara Gilliland--Services for Mrs. Sara Gilliland were held Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Archer's Chapel Methodist Church. The Rev. L. A. Smithmier officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery with Sudbury Funeral Home in charge. Mrs. Gilliland died at her home early Sunday afternoon following a heart attack. She was born in Crockett County and was the widow of the late W. T. Gilliland, farmer and landowner of Crockett County. She was 80, a Methodist, and a life long resident of Crockett County. She leaves three daughters, Mrs. Harris Kee, Mrs. Emmett Archer and Mrs. M. B. Baker, all of Frog Jump community near Gates; a stepdaughter, Mrs. W. R. Riley of near Gates, four sons, L. G. Gilliland, C. D. Gilliland, E. C. Gilliland and J. L. Gilliland of the Frog Jump community; one brother, Bob Reece of the Frog Jump community; 19 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

Prather Clinic--Born to Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Coker, Humboldt, Rt. 1, a daughter, December 12.


BIRTHDAY

Birthday Dinner--Mrs. Leslie Sims, assisted by Mrs. H. R. Culwell of Bells and Mrs. W. B. Strong of Alamo, entertained in the Sims home Saturday with a birthday dinner in honor of their sister, Mrs. J. I. Harwell of Friendship. Those attending were Mr. and Mrs. H. D. Culwell, Bells, Mr. and Mrs. J. I. Harwell and Mr. Hunter Bell of Friendship and Mrs. W. B. Strong of Alamo.

OBITUARIES

Mrs. Frank Rhodes--Services for Mrs. Idora Rhodes who died at her residence in Maury City Saturday morning after a brief illness were held Sunday afternoon at 2:00 with the Revs. J. T. Drace and R. E. Black officiating. She was 59 and a member of the Church of Christ. Burial, in charge of Garner Funeral Home of Ripley, was in Floyd Chapel Cemetery. She leaves her husband, Frank Rhodes; a stepson, Frank Rhodes, Jr., of Alabama; a daughter Mrs. Ed Gaddy and a stepdaughter, Mrs. Paul Smith, both of Maury City; two brothers, J. A. Williamson and B. M. Williamson, both of Maury City.

Mrs. Alice Burnett--Services for Mrs. Alice Burnett who died Friday at the home of her sister, Mrs. John Carman at Friendship, where held at the Maury City Church of Christ at 2:00 Saturday afternoon. R. E. Black and Earl Fly officiated. Burial was in Smith Cemetery with Sudbury Funeral Home in charge. Mrs. Burnett, who was 86, was the widow of William Burnett, a landowner and carpenter. She was a life long resident of Crockett County and was a member of the Church of Christ. She leaves two other sisters, Mrs. John Ball and Mrs. Elmer Shivers of Alamo and three brothers, Jim Warren of Cairo, John Warren of Brazil and Morris Warren of Memphis.

DeWitt N. Kernodle--Services for DeWitt N. Kernodle who died at his home in Jackson Sunday were held at the Salem Baptist Church Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. Capt. T. J. Overton of the Salvation Army, assisted by H. L. Branson officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery with Ronk Funeral Home in charge. Mr. Kernodle was 82 years of age and a native of McNairy County. Surviving are six children, Eldon Kernodle of Gadsden, Mrs. Homer Lloyd of Humboldt, Aubrey Kernodle of Humboldt, Mrs. Homer Gregory of Jackson, Howard Kernodle and Nearn Kernodle of Jackson.

Former Legion Official Dies--John Clarence Brown, local farmer and barber died yesterday at Memphis Kennedy General Hospital, the victim of leukemia. He was 59. He was born in Bon Aqua, Tenn., and later moved to Dickson, Tenn., before coming to Forrest City in 1926 to make his home. Mr. Brown served overseas in World War I in the Army. He was an active member of the American Legion, and was a past commander of the local King-Beazley Post. He was a member of the Baptist Church. He owned a barbershop in Forrest City, Ark., and held farming interest in this vicinity. Survivors include his wife Mrs. Grace Brown of Forrest City; one daughter, Mrs. W. A. Clement, Jr., of Dickson, Tenn.; a son, J. C. Brown, Jr., of Mobile, Ala.; four grandchildren; three brothers, Rommie Brown of Dickson, Miles Brown of Bon Aqua, Tenn. and Jack Brown of Nunnelly, Tenn.; a sister, Mrs. Callie Foster of Nashville, Tenn. Services were held at the First Baptist Church with Rev. T. K. Rucker officiating. Burial was in Forrest Park Cemetery. Members of the King-Beazley Post of the American Legion were honorary pallbearers. --Press-Scimitar-- Mr. Brown was the brother in law of Mrs. Earl Moore and Mrs. Otto Bryant of Bells, having married Miss Grace Bridger, daughter of the late Mr. Joe Bridger. Mr. and Mrs. Bryant and Mr. and Mrs. Moore attended the funeral Friday.

James Mack Robertson--James Mack Robertson, 79, retired farmer of the Fifth District, died at 6:00 a.m. Tuesday at Prather Clinic in Alamo. He was a member of the Baptist Church. He is survived by four sons, Ernest, Carl, Willie and David Robertson, all of Dyersburg; three daughters, Mrs. Ovella Jordan of Bells, Miss Virginia Robertson of Dyersburg, Mrs. Bessie Tate of Dyersburg. Services were at Ronk Funeral Home at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday. Rev. Dill of Dyersburg officiated. Burial was in Alamo Cemetery with Ronk Funeral Home in charge.


ANNIVERSARY

60th Anniversary--Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Robertson of Newbern will celebrate their sixtieth wedding anniversary with open house from 3:00 to 5:00 on Sunday afternoon, Dec. 30. They formerly lived at Friendship.


MARRIAGES

Randle - Chambers--Mr. A. B. Randle and Mrs. Kathryn Chambers of Alamo were united in marriage Saturday at Corinth, Miss. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Lindsey Allen. They have many friends who extend best wishes. They will make their home in Alamo.

Castleman - Griffin--Mr. C. E. Castleman of Alamo and Mrs. Flora Griffin of Bells were united in marriage in Corinth, Miss. Sunday, December 16. Mr. and Mrs. Castleman will reside in Alamo. They have many friends who extend best wishes.

Peay - Childress--In a setting of rare beauty Miss Betty Jean Peay, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Willie Bert Peay of 614 Brownsville, Trenton, Tenn., became the bride of Paul Nathan Childress, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Austin Childress of Newbern. The formal, double ring ceremony was performed at 6:30 o'clock Friday evening, Dec. 7th at the First Pentecostal Church in Trenton by Rev. K. V. Reeves, pastor. The bride was given in marriage by her father. Miss June Carolyn Childress, sister of the groom, served the bride as maid of honor. Little Miss Beverly Fields, 4-year-old daughter of Mrs. Robert Fields of Trenton, was charming as she performed the duties of flower girl. The rings, resting in a white rose on a pillow of white satin, was carried by Master Steve Graves, 5-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. A. D. Graves of Trenton. Lewis Gayle Sewell, nephew of the groom, served as best man. Bobby Holden of Alamo and Larry Parks of Trenton lit the candles. Ushers were Harold Tharp of Trenton and Robert Sewell of Newbern. A musical program was presented by Miss Noame Brickley of Jackson and James Leroy Crowe of Trimble, soloists with Mrs. Fred Combs of Newbern as pianist. Mrs. Childress graduated from the Alamo High School with the class of 1950. Mr. Childress is a senior in the Trimble High School where he will continue his studies. The young couple is making their home at 401 East Main St. in Newbern. (Church and dress descriptions were omitted.)
