BIRTHS

The Editor's Say-So--Another name has been added to the old family Bible record of Mr. Lee Follis of Alamo. A great granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Follis was born to Mr. and Mrs. Roy Davis Follis on July 23. She has been named Nancy Claire. The Follis Bible was printed in 1854 and contains a record of the birth and marriage of Mr. Follis' grandparents, William Follis, born Oct. 6, 1789, and Nancy Mays Follis, born January 1st, 1790. Six generations are recorded in the book. Mr. Lee Follis was born Oct 23, 1866 and his wife, Sallie Thomas Follis was born Sept. 4, 1861. Mr. Follis, who is very active for a man of his age, was born on the old Follis place near Alamo in a house that stood near the place where Roy and his wife now live. The hundred-acre farm was bought by Mr. Lee's father for $300, and was nearly all in timber at the time of the purchase. Mrs. Follis, who is in her ninetieth year, is confined to a wheel chair, but her general health is good. There were eleven children in Mr. Follis' grandfather's family and all recorded in the old Bible. Mr. Follis is the only survivor of four children in his family. They had only one son, Seba, who passed away a number of years ago. Two children of Seba, Clem Howell and Roy, are living. Clem Howell has two children. The family record that Mr. Follis has is one of the oldest and most complete that we have ever seen.

ENGAGEMENT

Miss Nell Berta Ronk is Affianced to Mr. James Tilden Haynes, Jr.--Ronk-Haynes Betrothal is Revealed--Of interest in this section is the announcement made today by Mr. and Mrs. Almo Lee Ronk of Alamo, Tenn. of the betrothal of their daughter, Nell Berta, to Mr. James Tildon Haynes, Jr., of Brownsville, Tenn. The bride-elect, who is the paternal granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Adolphus Ronk of Alamo and whose maternal grandparents are Mr. Larry Montague Culp and the late Mrs. Culp of Bells, Tenn., is a popular student of the Alamo High School, where she holds membership in the Beta Club, an honorary club, and is a member of the Glee Club. She had the honor to serve as Miss Alamo at the West Tennessee Strawberry Festival in Humboldt. Mr. Haynes is the paternal grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Tilden Alexander Haynes of Selmer, and his maternal grandparents are Dr. William H. Siler and the late Mrs. Siler of Silerton, Tenn. The bridegroom-elect was graduated from the Columbia Military Academy, Columbia, Tenn. and attends the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where he is affiliated with the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity and is a member of the Reserved Officers Training Corps. The wedding will be solemnized August seventeenth at the First Baptist Church in Alamo. Miss Barbara Ronk, sister of the bride-elect, will serve as maid of honor. Bridesmaids will be Miss Martha Green of Little Rock, Ark., Miss Ann McDade of Fulton, Ky., Miss Roberta Porter, Miss Joyce Worrell, Miss Betty Conley and Miss Betty Brown of Alamo. Charlotte Edwards of Alamo will be junior bridesmaid. Ushers will be Harvey Livingston, Bill Duffey, Jere Hooper, Phil Fitzgerald, Bob Ronk, Charles Haynes and Alsey Mann.

A Third Announcement Appearing on our feather page today is that of Berta Ronk of Alamo and James Haynes of Brownsville who will join the ranks of the young married come August seventeenth!! "Berta" and James were introduced on August 6, 1949, and a year later to the day, they had their first date, a Sunday afternoon automobile ride!! Months of separation while he was "away at college" did not lessen the romantic intentions of James, however, once he got around to seeking the "object of his affection," and letters flew thick and fast between Alamo and Knoxville, where the young man was enrolled at the state university! During the summer vacation the only dark cloud to hover over their horizon has been the prospect of another long school year apart. So, on July 21 they decided to avoid that very unhappy situation, and set a date for a later summer wedding. Berta is wearing an exquisite diamond solitaire flanked at either side by two small stones, set in a platinum and gold mounting, and in September, she will become mistress of a spic and span apartment near the campus of U.T. where she and James will make their home while he continues his college career. -Kat's Komments (Society Section) Jackson Sun-- (These articles were beneath a picture of Nell Berta Ronk)
