OBITUARIES


Robert Lee Richardson--Services were held Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Salem for Mr. Robert Lee Richardson of Gadsden, who died at his home Sunday. Rev. D. R. Dunnagan officiated. Burial was in Salem Cemetery under the direction of Ronk Funeral Home. He was born in Crockett County and was 79 years of age. He leaves one son, Homer Richardson of Gadsden and one daughter, Mrs. Clyde Byrd of Gadsden.

Mr. George Leek--Mr. George Leek, farmer residing on Bells, Route 3, died on July 30 and was buried at Providence near Bells on July 31 at 2 p.m., the Rev. Ivy Campbell of Jackson, officiating. Ronk Funeral Home was in charge of funeral arrangements. Mr. Leek was a native of Haywood County. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Daisy Leek; three children, James Leek, Fair Ruth Leek and David Leek, and five brothers and two sisters.

Mrs. Lula Green-Pine Bluff, Ark., Aug. 3--Services for Mrs. Lula Elizabeth Green, resident of Pine Bluff for nine years, who died here at the home of her grandson, Paul O. Marus, Tuesday, will be held this Thursday afternoon at the First Christian Church in Alamo, Tenn. She was 74. She was born in Bells, Tenn., and made her home in Alamo after her marriage until her husband's death, when she came to Pine Bluff. She was a lifelong member of the First Christian Church in Crockett County, Tenn. She leaves one son, Paul C. Green of Memphis, and one daughter, Mrs. W. H. Biggs of Harrisburg, Pa.

Arthur B. Peal--Funeral services were held Thursday at the Providence Baptist Church near Crockett Mills for Arthur B. Peal, retired farmer, who died at his home near Friendship Wednesday. Rev. J. T. Barker officiated. He was 67 and had been in ill health for some time. He leaves his wife, one daughter, Mrs. Olean Joyner of West Helena, Ark.; three sons, R. T. Peal and J. A. Peal, both of Memphis and W. A. Peal of Pasadena, Calif.; two stepsons, Estill Wright of Memphis and Hubert Wright of Crockett Mills; one sister, Mrs. Ira Brasfield of Alamo route; three brothers, Ira Peal of Crockett Mills, K. S. Kail of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and R. H. Peal. Friendship Funeral Home was in charge.

Midway--Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Ellington, Mr. and Mrs. Jones Gage, Mr. Raymond Ellington, Mrs. S. H. Ellington, Mrs. Robert Horton, Conyers Horton and Danny Stephens attended the funeral of their aunt, Mrs. Dena Young, at Oak Grove last Thursday.

Alamo--Mrs. J. B. Emison returned home from Memphis Monday. She attended the funeral of Lt. Bob Easley, brother of Mrs. J. B. Emison, Jr., who was killed on Luzon in 1945.


BIRTHS


Alamo--Born to Mr. and Mrs. Doyle Williams, July 23, a daughter. She has been given the name Barbara Jean.

Alamo--Born to Mr. and Mrs. John Delton Perry of Dyersburg, a son on August 1, who has been named John Ronald.

Bells Items--Mrs. T. F. Brooks, Jr., and young son, Paul Wayne, have returned from the Baptist Hospital where Paul was born July 27 and Mr. Brooks and Steve have come from Munford. They are spending a few days with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. T. F. Brooks, Sr., before returning home.


ANNIVERSARY


Married 50 years--Mr. John Hess Evans was born on December 12, 1874. Minnie Frances McDermott was born November 3, 1878. They were born and reared between Gadsden and Alamo and were married on Sunday, August 1, 1898 by Sq. Jim Worthman of Alamo. They have 5 children and 6 grandchildren. The children are: James H. Evans, Gadsden, Mildred Boyd, Gadsden and Effie Cherry of Gadsden; Eloise Kee of Alamo and Mrs. Dave Owen of Humboldt. They celebrated their 50th Anniversary on Sunday, August 1st with an Open House from 2 to 6 p.m. and invited all their friends to call.

OBITUARIES


Mrs. Kate Harwell--Mrs. Kate Harwell, 89, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. P. E. Bessent, in Friendship Sunday morning. Mrs. Harwell was in fair health until a few weeks ago when she fell and received injuries from which she never recovered. Mrs. Harwell was a daughter of the late Rev. W. C. T. Young, one of the pioneer Methodist preachers of this section, and was the widow of the late Joe P. Harwell, one of the community's outstanding citizens. She was known to everyone in the community as "Mammy" and her friends were numbered by her acquaintances. She reared a fine family of eleven children, six of whom survive. The survivors are three daughters, Mrs. P. E. Bessent and Mrs. R. A. Cole of Friendship and Mrs. W. E. Vernon, Sr., of Bradenton, Fla.; three sons, A. W. Harwell and J. I. Harwell of Friendship and W. D. Harwell of Memphis; two sisters, Mrs. J. F. Sanders of Parkin, Ark., and Mrs. W. A. Edwards of Blytheville, Ark.; a brother, Dr. J. C. Young of Jonesboro, Ark.; 15 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. She was a devout member of the Methodist Church. Services were held Monday at 11 a.m. at the Friendship Methodist Church by Rev. C. O. Frey, Rev. W. C. Skinner and Rev. J. B. Hill. The remains were interred at Mt. Zion Cemetery by the side of her late husband, Joe P. Harwell, with Friendship Funeral Home in charge.

Ruben Bryan Riddick--Ruben Bryan Riddick, 48, of Memphis died at the Western State Hospital on August 4, at 7:15 p.m. He was a native of Crockett County and a member of the Methodist Church. Funeral services were held at Old Field Church near Maury City. One brother, James W. Riddick and one sister, Owana Riddick, survive. Ronk Funeral Home was in charge of funeral arrangements and burial was at Old Field.

Everett L. Rodgers--Services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Christian Church in Crockett Mills for Everett L. Rodgers. Rev. Alexander of Humboldt will officiate. Burial was under the direction of Ronk Funeral Home. Mr. Rodgers was 23 at the time of his death in France in 1944. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Tobe Rodgers of Crockett Mills.

Tommy Redmond--Services for Tommy Redmond will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Providence Church near Crockett Mills. Burial was in the church cemetery under the direction of Ronk Funeral Home. Tommy was the son of Mrs. J. M. Redmond and the late Mr. Redmond. He was killed in the Belgium Bulge near Bastogne on February 5, 1945 and buried in Hamm Cemetery of Luxembourg. He was 19 years old and a member of the Crockett Mills Christian Church. He leaves his mother, three brothers, Emerson of Pheba, Miss. Silas of Memphis and W. B. of Crockett Mills; two sisters, Mrs. D. M. Cotten and Miss Emeline Redmond of Crockett Mills.

Services for Sgt. Ivan Mansfield--Funeral services for Sergeant Ivan Mansfield were held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the First Christian Church at Crockett Mills. Sergeant Mansfield, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Otis Mansfield of Crockett Mills, joined the Army on October 10, 1942 and was killed in action on May 28, 1945 during the Luzon Campaign, Philippine Islands. Sergeant Mansfield was a member of the 128th Infantry Regiment, 32nd Infantry Division. This Regiment saw action at Buna-Sanananda, Saidor, Aitape, Leyte, and Luzon.
          The caliber of the soldier and the character of the man are appropriately stated in the citation awarding him the Bronze star Metal "For heroic achievement in connection with military operations against the enemy near Villa Verde Trail, Luzon, Philippine Islands on 28 May 1945. When six were wounded during heavy fighting Sergeant Mansfield voluntarily went forward and assisted in their evacuation. He then started to reorganize the perimeter defense against the intense enemy assaulting and while so doing he was killed by enemy artillery. Sergeant Mansfield's extreme heroism was an inspiration to his fellow soldiers." In addition to this citation Sergeant Mansfield was twice awarded the Purple Heart.
          In addition to his father and mother, Sergeant Mansfield leaves surviving him, brothers: Finis Mansfield, Lexie Mansfield, Homer Mansfield, Lendell Mansfield and Tommy Mansfield; sisters: Beauton Mansfield, Mignaone Mansfield, Avrone Mansfield and Mrs. Nell Moore; grandmother, Mr. J. H. Mansfield. The burial was in Maury City Cemetery. Friendship Funeral Home was in charge.

Alamo--Mrs. J. B. Avery, Sr., attended the funeral of her nephew, Mr. Vernie Nichols in Memphis, Sunday.

Alamo--Mesdames S. E. Johnson and Lillie Humphreys attended the funeral of Cecil Rooks in Humboldt.

Midway--Mrs. J. W. Smothers was called to Dyersburg Sunday night. Her brother passed away. Burial was Tuesday.


BIRTHS


Salem News--Mr. and Mrs. Howard Buckner are the parents of twin girls.

Friendship--Mr. and Mrs. Butler Clark announce the arrival of a son, Saturday, August 7. He has been named James Butler Clark, Jr.

Alamo--Mrs. John Elton Perry and baby son, John Ronald, of Dyersburg were guests Sunday of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Perry and mother, Mrs. John Perry, enroute home from Humboldt Hospital. They were accompanied by Mr. John Delton Perry.


ENGAGEMENT


Engagement announced--Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Edenton of Alamo announce the engagement of their daughter, Ruth, to Gilbert G. Harrison, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Harrison of Alamo. The wedding will take place at the Alamo Baptist Church, Sunday, August 29. The bride-elect was graduated from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and Mr. Harrison is a student of Murray State College, Murray, Ky.


WEDDING


Davis-Nolen--Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Nolen of Alamo announce the marriage of their daughter, Dora Lee Nolen to Wayne Davis. Mr. Davis is the son of Lee Owen Davis of Alamo. The wedding was solemnized at Corinth, Miss., July 31st with C. J. Knight, officiating. Mr. and Mrs. Perry Davis of Memphis were their only attendants. Mr. and Mrs. Davis are both graduates of Alamo High School. They will make their home in Alamo.

Bells Items--Mrs. Lona Dodd received recently an invitation to the wedding of her granddaughter, Mona Claire Weddel to Mr. Eugene McKinnon which will take place on Sunday, August 15th at 2:30 o'clock at the Wilshire Christian Church, Wilshire Blvd., at Normandie, Los Angeles, Calif. Mona Claire lived with her grandmother here and went to school for several years and the above announcement will be of interest to her many friends.

OBITUARIES


Claude H. Williams--Funeral services were held on Sunday afternoon at 4:00 at the residence for Claude Harrison Williams, who died at Webb-Williamson Hospital, Jackson, Saturday. Bro. Oscar Patterson officiated. Burial was in Belleview with Ronk Funeral Home in charge. He was 59 and a retired farmer. He leaves his wife; four sons, Lawrence Williams, Dan Williams, Homer and Hill Williams, all of Bells; two daughters, Mrs. Kate Turner and Mrs. Irene Craig of Bells; one brother, John Williams of Whiteville and one sister, Mrs. Nora Reagin of Jackson.

Killed in auto accident--Services for James Albert Young of Halls, who lost his life Sunday night, when his car plunged into a water-filled bar pit on Highway 51, were held at 2:30 Monday at South Fork Baptist Church near Friendship. The Rev. Edgar Williams and the Rev. John Seaton officiated. Burial was in Bowen's Chapel Cemetery under the direction of Sudbury Funeral Home of Halls. Mr. Young, who was 21, apparently lost control of his automobile just north of South Fork Bridge, county officers said. A companion, Miss Pauline Robinson was injured seriously. She is in Baird-Brewer Hospital at Dyersburg. The investigators said that while Mr. Young suffered numerous injuries, his death may have been caused by drowning. He was born in Dyer Country, and spent most of his life in this area. He served two years in the Army during World War II, and on his return was employed by an electric service firm in Halls. He leaves his mother, Mrs. J. B. Young and a brother, Kenneth Young, both of Halls.

Patricia Elaine Hunt--Services were held Wednesday at Salem for Patricia Elaine Hunt the infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William R. Hunt, who died August 12 at the age of one day. Bro. B. A. Walker officiated. Burial was at Salem under the direction of Ronk Funeral Home. She leaves her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hunt; one sister, Betty Ann and two brothers, Jerry Neal and Johnnie O'Bryan.

Sgt. T. G. Stivers buried in Steele--Last rites for Sgt. Thomas Glenn Stivers, 35, son of Mrs. B. F. Lester of Steele, Mo., and T. H. Stivers, of Bethel Springs, Tenn., were conducted at the Christian Church at Steele yesterday by the Rev. E. W. Stovall, pastor of the Church of Christ in Blytheville. Sergeant Stivers, who was the nephew of Mrs. Claude Cooper of Blytheville, was killed while on active patrol duty in Germany at Valeseck, near Frankfurt. He died July 8, and his body was flown home on the Pan-American Airways for burial.
          Sergeant Stivers was born at Steele and lived there all his life except for the more than seven years he spent in service. While living in Steele, after he completed his education, was engaged in farming. He entered the Navy at the age of 16, was soon discharged; and in the early part of 1941 he joined the Army and served until V-J Day. He served with the First Army, Second and Third Armored Divisions, under General Patton and General Hodge. He was home for only a short time before he enlisted again, May 10, 1946, for service with the Army.
          Survivors include his parents, his stepfather, B. F. Lester of Steele, his fiancée, Miss Geneva Burress of Steele, to whom he was to be married soon; a sister, Miss Melva Jean Stivers and a brother, John Clinton Stivers of Bethel Springs; two stepsisters, Mrs. Ida Barnes of Steele, Mrs. Cleles Earls of St. Louis, Mo., and a stepbrother, Lewis Lester of Cooter, Mo., his grandmother, Mrs. Dollie Stivers, Fresno, Calif., and four uncles. Graveside services were conducted by Steele Memorial Post V.F.W. Interment was in Mt. Zion Cemetery with German Undertaking Co. in charge.
          Editors Note: Miss Geneva Burress is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Burress of Gadsden, Tenn.

Bells Items--Mrs. E. M. Halyard, Mrs. C. Rex Mehr, Sr., Mrs. Helen Harris and Miss Fay Smothers attended the funeral of Mrs. J. Alper in Memphis, Friday. Mrs. Alper was the mother of Mrs. Harry Wise in whose home she had visited and had many friends here who were saddened by her death.


BIRTH


Bells Items--Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Ketchum, Jr., are the parents of a son born, Monday morning at their home in Bells.


WEDDING


Maury City--Mrs. Kathryn Eason Baker, daughter of Mrs. Bessie Eason and Mr. Freed Warren, Sr., were married August 4th in Hernando, Miss. Mrs. Warren has been employed in Memphis. They will make their home in Detroit, Mich., where Mr. Warren is employed.

OBITUARIES


Mrs. Lizzie Kesler--Mrs. Lizzie Kesler who was born on March 27, 1874, departed this life August 20, 1948. Funeral services were held at the Bells Church of Christ at 2 p.m. Sunday, August 22, 1948. Ernest V. Boone, Minister of the Church of Christ of Alamo, officiated. Mrs. Kesler is survived by two sons, Louis Johnson of Bells and Jim Johnson of Brownsville; three sisters, Mrs. Julia Bentley, Ripley. Mrs. Fred Joyner, Harvey, Ill., and Mrs. Howell Whitelow of Tampa, Fla.; one half sister, Margaret Hopkins of Brownsville and two half brothers, John and Homer Anderson of California; eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Dr. L. D. Thomas--Dr. L. D. Thomas, colored, who practiced medicine in Alamo for over 35 years and for a good portion of that time had offices in Brownsville, died suddenly Saturday while visiting in Carbondale, Ill. He was 62 years of age and a native of Jamaica. Dr. Thomas was a leader among his people and had many friends both white and colored. He had no near relatives in this section. Two cousins, Hortense Adams of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Mildred McCray of Summitt, N.J., are the only known relatives surviving. Funeral services will be held at the colored Methodist Church in Alamo Friday at 2 p.m. The body will be at the church from 6 p.m. Thursday.

Aubrey Henderson--Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 3:00 at the Walnut Hill Baptist Church for Aubrey Henderson of Bells, who died at the Webb-Williamson Hospital, Jackson, Tuesday a.m. Rev. W. B. Gossett officiated. Burial was in Belleview Cemetery under the direction of Ronk Funeral Home. He was 39 and a member of the Baptist Church. He leaves five daughters, Carolyn, Shirley, Ann, Jane and Martha Nell; parents, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Henderson of Bells; four brothers, James of Bells, Raymond of Lexington, Harvey of Washington, D.C., and Doyle of Alamo; two sisters, Mrs. Claude Dove of Alamo and Mrs. Hugh Ellington of Bells.

W. R. Yearwood--W. R. Yearwood died Friday afternoon at 1:15 at his home in Alamo after a long illness. He was 76 years of age and a member of the Church of Christ. Mr. Yearwood was a funeral director in Alamo for a long time, retiring several years ago when he sold to Evans & Lasiter. He was a native of this county and a member of one of the pioneer families. A number of relatives and friends survive beside his daughter, Mrs. R. B. Cheatham of Alamo and a sister, Mrs. Billie Faircloth of Jonesboro, Ark. Services were held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Church of Christ in Alamo with E. V. Boone, local minister officiating. Burial was in Belleview Cemetery with Ronk Funeral Home in charge.


WEDDINGS


Seth H. Moore married to Veda Baker--The marriage of Veda Baker of Spiro, Okla., and Stockton, Calif., to Seth H. Moore of Fort Smith, Ark., took place at a simple ceremony Thursday at 4 p.m. in the chapel of the First Christian Church. Dr. Wallis R. Bacon, pastor, officiated at the marriage service and Mrs. Clara Autrey and David Redwin, both of Spiro, served as the bridal couple's matron of honor and best man. The bride wore pink. Afterwards Mr. and Mrs. Moore left on a short wedding trip. On their return they will reside in Fort Smith. Mr. Moore will be remembered here as the son of the late Buster Moore of Crockett Mills and has many relatives and friends in this county.

Hopper-Cozart--Mrs. Effie Hopper announces the marriage of her daughter, Wanda Jean Hopper to Royal Lee Cozart at Corinth, Miss., Saturday, August 21, in the home of a Church of Christ preacher. The bride was dressed in navy blue with blue accessories. Mr. and Mrs. Vann E. Evans were their only attendants. They were both students of West Tennessee Business College, Jackson. After spending this week at Birmingham, Ala., they will be at home with his parents for a while.
