LATE 1930'S Francis Wolfe, his wife and two children came to Alamo in 1930's Mr. Wolfe to organize and direct the band and Mrs. Wolfe to be the Choral Director. Mr. Wolfe had been a member of the Cincinnati Symphony but for personal reasons accepted the challenge of the Alamo High School Band. The School had no money during the depression, so as part of the Agreement, individuals who wanted to be members of the band had, to pay fees to Mr. Wolfe for private lessons. Band Mothers raised money for the uniforms. Groups in Crockett County including political parties, etc. gave a donation each time the band played for them and others did the same on different occasions. The money was used to buy the very large instruments. The band had full support of everyone! Band Camp was near Mercer where Mr. Wolfe had friends and band mothers went along as chaperones. In fairness, it must be noted that some of the band members had been members of the 4H Club Band in Jackson before Mr. Wolfe came. Their parents had taken them to Jackson as needed. Consequently, these members formed a nucleus for the beginners. Thus, in the second year, the band won First Place in the Mid South Competition at the Mule Day Show in Columbia, Tennessee. The band left at 5:00 a.m. on Highway 70 with all its curves in an old fashioned bus with long wooden seats facing each other, and arrived about 9:30 AM. There were no facilities for changing clothes as there were so many bands in the competition. The band had white shirts, pants, and skirts with white shoes and had to march in a muddy field. In preparation for this trip, the band spent hours in practice part of lunch time, after school and even on Saturday. All the drills on the paper were not really necssary which was found out later. Finally, the band was ready for the big test! After the contest, band members were given a little freedom for their success. One of the judges called two members over and asked where they were from. He said, you were the best 'damned' little marching band I have ever seen but 'Oh God, those uniforms!' He continued the band had scored a perfect performance and the only negative mark was for its uniforms. On another occasion, the band marched in a parade in Jackson. When the band arrived home, parents and friends were standing in the yards cheering. The band was unaware of what it meant. Well, the radio announcer broadcasting the parade on the radio said What band is this coming the people are excited, people are following them on the sidewalks. It was Alamo Band. While the First Band was a top marching band, it did not score that high on concert stage but did its best and passed. The Band of Today has a different style and also works hard and competes well but the original band set the stage.
