Caroline Summitt Francis, long-time resident of LaFollette and
Marietta, GA died Oct. 6 of complications from chronic renal failure and
Alzheimer disease at the home of her son in DeKalb County, GA. She was born June
23, 1921 in her parents' home on East Central Avenue in LaFollette. Her family
moved from LaFollette to Coal Creek when she was three years old and back to
LaFollette five years later. She graduated in 1937 at age 15 from LaFollette
High School, where she appeared in several school plays and was the editor of
the school newspaper, "The Valley Echo." She attended Brenau College in
Gainsville, GA for one year and then transferred to the University of Tennessee
in Knoxville where she graduated in 1941. She and Paul Bailey Francis, Sr., also
of LaFollette were married in 1940 in Sevierville. She was a schoolteacher at
LaFollette High School in 1941-1942 and resigned to accept a position as
secretary for Francis Rex Coal Company. In Dec. 1944, she saved herself, her one
year old son and her unborn child from death in a house fire by falling out of a
second story window in the snow with her son in her arms. Her husband and she
built the brick home at 100 Linden Park in 1948. She operated Francis Gift Shop
in LaFollette for several years in the 1950's and returned to LaFollette High
School in 1958, where she served as Business Education teacher, guidance
counselor, and Distributive Education Coordinator. In the summer of 1964, she
entered the Graduate School of the University of Tennessee and received a Master
in Science degree with a major in Guidance in 1970. In May 1968, she accepted a
position as Federal Projects Coordinator and Supervisor of Guidance and
Vocational Education for the Campbell County Department of Education, from which
she retired in 1973. After retirement, she lived for 28 years in Marietta, GA,
where she was active in her Zeta Tau Alpha sorority alumni association, several
bridge clubs, and the Indian Hills Country Club women's golf association, for
which she served as president for one term. Her honors there included a
hole-in-one in 1982 and the women's golf association Seniors Tournament Champion
in 1986. She was the granddaughter of physician and former mayor of LaFollette,
Dr. Ulysses S. G. Carden and wife, Ida F. Brown Carden and also of Professor
James H. and Laura M. Wolford Summitt, all formerly of LaFollette. She was
preceded in death by her first husband, Paul Bailey Francis, Sr.; parents, James
Boyd and Vera Carden Summitt; son, Dr. James Boyd Francis. She is survived by
her son, Dr. Paul Bailey Francis, Jr. and wife, Linda of Atlanta, GA;
daughter-in-law, Angie S. Francis of White Stone, VA; step-children, Lee Blasing
and husband, Rick, Jer LaSuer, all of Birmingham, AL; four grandchildren, three
step grandchildren and three great grandchildren. In LaFollette, she was a
member of the First Baptist Church. In Marietta, she was a member of the
Lutheran Church of the Incarnation. The body was cremated. A memorial service is
planned for a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations
in her name be made to any worthwhile charity. Evelyn Huddleston age 85 of the
Stinking Creek Community in LaFollette, went home to be with her Lord and to
join her dear husband, Everett, on Oct. 7. She was a devoted mother and
grandmother, friend and companion whose greatest joy was having her family
gathered round her. She was a faithful, long time member of the Walnut Grove
United Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years,
Everett Huddleston and by their son, Jackie Henry Huddleston.She is survived by
her daughters and son-in-laws, Janice Powers and husband, Delmas, Agnes Seibers
and husband, Carl, Millie Garrison and husband, Bob, Eunice Reynolds, Nancy
Green, Gail LeBlanc and husband, Lanny, Norma Asher and husband, Ronnie, Rhonda
Douglas and husband, Garry; son, Jay Huddleston and wife, Linda; 15
grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; sisters, Lillie Kidwell of LaFollette,
Opal Carr of Ohio, Fay Goodman of Fla; brothers, Hubert Kidwell and Everett
Kidwell both of LaFollette, Clyde Kidwell of Crossville, and Dewey Kidwell of
Jefferson City; several nieces, nephews, and a host of near and distant
relatives and friends to mourn her passing and to miss seeing her beautiful
smile.Funeral services were Oct. 10 at the Walnut Grove Baptist Church with Rev.
Delmas Bruce, Rev. Lonnie Kennedy, and Rev. Robert Green officiating. Interment
was in the Hall Cemetery with her grandsons given the honor of serving as
pallbearers. Walters Funeral Home was in charge of the
arrangements.

John B. Freeman, age 83 of Jacksboro, died Sept. 1. at St. Mary's
Medical Center of Campbell County. His wife, Louise Freeman, preceded him in
death in 1985. A retired welder, he was a member of the Lion's Club and the
Fraternal Order of Eagles. A U.S. Army veteran of WWII, he was awarded many
decorations and citations. He is survived by his daughter, Sandra Owens and
husband Ken of LaFollette; sons, Rev. Wayne Freeman and wife Mary of LaFollette,
Arlis Freeman and wife Brenda of Jacksboro, and Dennis Freeman and wife Rene' of
LaFollette; nine grandchildren and several great-grandchildren and
great-great-grandchildren; brother, Joe Freeman of Killeen, Texas; sisters, Jean
Rogers Freeman of Corbin, KY, and Edna Dyer of Louisville, KY; several nieces,
nephews, other relatives and friends. Graveside services were Sept. 4 at Ausmus
Cemetery in Speedwell with his son, Rev. Wayne Freeman officiating. The Campbell
County Honor Guard will conduct full military honors. Walters Funeral Home was

Ophia Miller Fritts, - age 91, of Heiskell, passed away Tuesday,
February 11, 2003 at the Windwood Healthcare Center in Clinton. She was a member
of Deep Springs Baptist Church. She loved sewing, gardening & flowers. She
was very active in the Home Demonstration Club and her church as long as she was
able. She was a loving mother, grandmother and friend to all. Preceded in death
by husband, Carl H. Fritts, Sr.; sisters, Helen Cole, Clara Bargloff, Neva
Miller; brothers, L.X. Miller, Kyle Miller, Paul Miller, L.D. Miller, Bob
Miller, Fred Miller; grandson, Eric A. Fritts. Mrs. Fritts was born March 17,
1911 in Anderson County. Survivors: sons, Kenneth Fritts & wife, Opal of
Heiskell, Doug Fritts & wife, Andrea of Clinton, Carl Fritts, Jr. &
wife, Donna of Atlanta, GA, Ronnie Fritts & wife, Lana of Powell; 10
grandchildren and 10 great- grandchildren. The family will receive friends 6:00
- 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 12, 2003 at Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in
Clinton with funeral service following the visitation at 8:00 p.m., in the
chapel with Rev. Jerry Copeland & Rev. Phil Poe officiating. Interment will

July 22 1995 Meranda Catherine Fultz, infant daughter of
Mike and Terry Fultz, died July 22 at Jellico Community Hospital. She is
survived by brother, Joshua Fultz of Lafollette grandmother Dorothy Fultz of
Harlan Ky and Great grandmother Mable Marlow of Lafollette. A Funeral services
were Sunday July 23 at Martins Chapel with the Rev.John Bell officiating.
