Henderson & Co made their celebrated Transylvanis purchase from the Indians in 1775.  It included all the Cumberland Valley in Tennessee. Although promptly repudiated by the government of North Carolina, it served as a pretext for the settlement on the Cumberland which was effected by James Robertson and his companions in 1779. The Cumberland settlers, in the beginning of 1780, before North Carolina had asserted her right to occupy that territory, formed their association and
articles of goverment, which was the second like goverment.
