Prisoners of War
There were two main battles in which men of the 4th TN Cavalry were taken prisoner, the first one
being the Feb. 1864 skirmish at Okalona, Mississippi, and the second being McCooks' Raid of July 30-31, 1864 near Newnan, Georgia, in which dozens of Tennesseans were taken prisoner.
Quite a few of the earliest enlistees, who joined the Union Army before the creation of the
4th TN Cavalry, were taken prisoner in late 1861/early 1862, sometimes for very brief periods (less than
a day's time), and sometimes for months on end. However, I am not enumerating those men here, as I consider
them to be in a different category of "POW" than the traditional definition.
